Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty had some music in the "negative space" between tracks. I believe it was the only CD I owned that did this, kinda neat.

Rockhard in a Funky Place really loud in a club is better than most things on this Earth

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 13 February 2017 22:48 (seven years ago) link

Pregaps (the negative space in front of tracks) are not the same as subindexes. Back in the late 80s a friend had a CD player that showed subindexes, and I can remember just one CD that had them: Pump by Aerosmith. A few of the longer intros had a different subindex than the main song.

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 06:16 (seven years ago) link

They were often used in classical CDs

Damn, this Lovesexy sequencing is a pain in the ass when you just want to put "Anna Stesia" or "Positivity" on a playlist

relistening to Art Official Age and at 2.45 on "clouds" it gets kind of bummerish
femme brit voice intones: "mr nelson. mr nelson can you hear my voice? sir, we know you're a little bit groggy and you're probably going to find it hard to speak but don't try to talk or persist too much now. we just wanted to let you know that the medication you were given has put you in suspended animation for quite some time... well, in fact, for forty five years. But where you are now is a place that does not require time. That being said, you are completely safe and we are here to help you."

yikes

it may be that I have never listened to AOA all the way through?

his eye is on despair-o (Jon not Jon), Friday, 24 February 2017 18:26 (seven years ago) link

it's a pretty good album! mostly meat in the middle. "U KNOW" and "BREAKFAST CAN WAIT" and "TIME" hold up as legit classics imo. the "until i /i find my/my way back/home/home" theme weaving through the "WAY BACK HOME" / "affirmation III" is lovely, very throwback to Come. but wooboy, the "in the afterworld" electro-spectral bullshit really stings to hear it now.

"Baltimore" was one of, if not the last, original song he released, right? If so, what a great swansong - beautiful, with a killer guitar lead. Easily my favorite thing he did this century.

flappy bird, Friday, 24 February 2017 19:15 (seven years ago) link

baltimore is great

in general i quite like hitnrun volume 2

"Breakdown" is the standout and swansong track off AOA (a fine album) Prince suggested it was his fave in interviews

Yeah, Baltimore and Breakdown are his best in many years, IMO.

So I have a lot of trouble with Art Official Age (i reacquainted myself over the weekend) because it just sounds so fucking terrible. So incredibly thin and bodiless, almost like the effect native to a low bitrate mp3. It sounds like he abused some sort of stereo widening plugin -- synths and rhythm elements are always being spread to the extremes of the field so that they sound incredibly anemic... anytime something is fairly tightly located near the center it has some body and impact to it but so many of the songs have important elements atomized to the winds. It sounds like it could be cool when i describe it in words but it is just an inherently bad sound IMO. Shame because this is a good set of songs and a good set of performances with lots of good ideas in them.

There's a general trend in Prince toward thin DAW-ey terrible synth patches starting from about 1994 on but on AOA it is intolerable to me.

Still utterly utterly unacceptable.

I'm going to purple rain screening on Friday. Been listening to a lot of prime protege stuff (1st Sheila LP, Martika stuff, etc)

iris marduk (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:38 (seven years ago) link

Here's hoping that the material from the Vault's start seeing the light of day, but as with all prime era Prince I expect we'll be teased with a release for years.

Warner, which released Prince’s first 18 albums containing most of the hits, signed another record deal with Prince in 2014 that secured its ownership of all of those albums in perpetuity overseas, while giving it the right to block future releases from Prince’s storied vault—the centerpiece of Universal’s deal—if the tunes were recorded while he was under contract with Warner.

surprised Prince went for this deal after all the acrimony for all those years

surprised Prince went for this deal after all the acrimony for all those years

Yeah, but maybe there were new people who made it worth his while to come back. Hell, even John Fogerty re-signed with Fantasy in 2005 (after everyone who was responsible for his shitty deal were no longer with the label or dead).

Variety is running with the track listing story as well, saying that this Violet Reality person tracked down the ISRC codes (the 12 digit codes used to ID songs for iTunes, YouTube, and everywhere else).

This comes out and I'm totally buying it, but several of the songs on the original album were longer in the movie - I think "The Beautiful Ones," "Baby I'm A Star," maybe one other. Why on earth wouldn't they include the unedited movie versions in the reissue? And why not also throw in the Time songs that were in the movie and (on Ice Cream Castles) but not on the soundtrack?

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Thursday, 20 April 2017 01:35 (seven years ago) link

If this is true, I'm bummed the longer "Beautiful Ones" isn't on the tracklist.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 April 2017 13:45 (seven years ago) link

It'd be kind of neat if they had included some of Michel Colombier's original score, but that's more of a 'we got five discs to fill up' kind of item.

I really wish we could have the weird sex music he has playing on his stereo when apollonia comes over to his pad.
