I'm curious about his Japanese fan following. He's got 16 shows lined up at different concert halls in Japan! Do they really love him over there? I'm curious how his music effects them.

was over there recently, loved the posters for the tour in the metro, very red dead redemption

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 7 March 2016 14:28 (eight years ago) link

yeah seems like he's got a pretty serious japanese fanbase.
looks as though mavis staples is opening the US dates? Think I'll go to the red rocks show ...

tylerw, Monday, 7 March 2016 15:04 (eight years ago) link

So any news on what kind of album this is?

niels, Monday, 7 March 2016 15:54 (eight years ago) link

He and Mavis Staples and playing Ravinia (similar to Tanglewood, etc.) this summer.

... (Eazy), Monday, 7 March 2016 15:56 (eight years ago) link

rumors are that the new one is a sequel to shadows in the night

tylerw, Monday, 7 March 2016 16:03 (eight years ago) link

I hope so!

EZ Snappin, Monday, 7 March 2016 16:06 (eight years ago) link

Didn't know he'd be at Ravinia with Mavis, what a great bill. I'm seeing her again next week, but that seems like the way to go.

Dylan gets ideas from Japan, remember:

On his last album, “Love and Theft,” a fan spotted about a dozen passages similar to lines from “Confessions of a Yakuza,” a gangster novel written by Junichi Saga, an obscure Japanese writer.

yeah that's no good

Treeship, Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:09 (eight years ago) link

i think it's ok! i really like shadows in the night ... maybe not as exciting as an album of originals but the dude has written a lot of songs.

tylerw, Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:10 (eight years ago) link

no, i need more

tylerw, Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:11 (eight years ago) link

i did like shadows, it was good! i just want more new songs

TBH i kinda want Dylan to "blow it up" a bit and ditch everything, feel like he's in a rut....too many blues vamps with hardly any changes, maybe get a new band, new producer or something

i actually feel the same way about The Fall lately

robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:13 (eight years ago) link

though I would like The Fall to do a Sinatra covers album

robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:13 (eight years ago) link

dylan and mark e smith could switch bands

tylerw, Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:14 (eight years ago) link

that would be dope actually

robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:14 (eight years ago) link

can obama do an executive order on his way out?

robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:15 (eight years ago) link

he's going to announce it during his sxsw address, along with a decree commanding a husker du reunion

tylerw, Thursday, 10 March 2016 22:17 (eight years ago) link

speaking of record store day, definitely gonna wake up early to get the dylan and this ethan hawke single

Yeah, I'd like him to roll out something differently, unexpectedly customized, but meanwhile, and back in the day, like I said in P & J, "Love and Theft is the best Tom Waits album ever", which still seems about right, and Shadows In The Night certainly works as an empathetic Sinatra homage---but at the same time, they're both Dylany as hell, and not in self-imitative ways.
Make of this what you will.
Oh yeah, and speaking of Shadows, "Why Try To Change Me Now" is by Cy Coleman, a songwriter's-songwriter-type Broadway guy, who lived and worked well into the 60a, maybe 70s, but never ever went rock---yet somewhere I still have a promo of a Cy Coleman tribute by this-century-active rock etc. artists, and it's pretty damn edutaining, if I remember half-way right; gotta find that.

sounds great, happy it seems to be going for a different vibe than Stadows (which was great, but I'm always curious to hear something new)

Wow, that voice is a strange blend of his 70s narrative singing and his desiccated, spectral 21st century tones. He must have rested up from touring before the sessions.

i saw speculation somewhere that he kicked smoking between tempest and shadows, it's the only reasonable explanation for his voice suddenly improving after so many years of declining

tylerw, Monday, 11 April 2016 19:36 (eight years ago) link

and speaking of speculation, rumors are-a-flying that his recent studio sessions were for an entirely different album made up of "mostly original contemporary songs"

two weeks pass...

So, I turned on the radio last night, heard what I sure thought might be an advance track from Fallen Angels---turned ot it was by Freddie Cole, brother of Nat. Will have to check more of his stuff.

dow, Monday, 25 April 2016 20:36 (seven years ago) link

the first time he quit smoking:

WENNER: I’m sure you read the reviews of “Nashville Skyline.” Everybody remarks on the change of your singing style...

DYLAN: Well Jann, I’ll tell you something. There’s not too much of a change in my singing style, but I’ll tell you something which is true... I stopped smoking. When I stopped smoking, my voice changed... so drastically, I couldn’t believe it myself. That’s true. I tell you, you stop smoking those cigarettes (laughter)... and you’ll be able to sing like Caruso.

niels, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link

i love that interview. they should do a sequel so dylan can troll jann some more.

tylerw, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 15:04 (seven years ago) link

i sort of hope this is going to be like good as i've been to you/world gone wrong, where 2 covers albums serve as the jumping off point for a new era for dylan...as much as i've loved the post love & theft era, i think it's been great, i felt on tempest it was starting to tire, esp. the bluesier numbers where they would literally just ride on riff & a turnaround for like 5 minutes (which works for lungfish but hey)

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 28 April 2016 14:42 (seven years ago) link

yeah, i like tempest, but there is definitely a kinda reined in feeling instrumentally ... i think one of the songs might even be a loop? can't remember.
will be interesting to see if he has any new tricks up his sleeve. not even sure what i'd like him to do. maybe something with his piano to the fore? he plays it so much live these days.

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2016 14:49 (seven years ago) link

just something that has a little more movement in terms of chord changes and melody, like a good example might be "workingman's blues #2" off modern times, i think he could sing this song better now

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPPbQexwTR4

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 28 April 2016 19:43 (seven years ago) link

The last two tracks aside, think most of Tempest aims to prove he ain't mellow, and succeeds---"So much," he sneers, "for the wasted years." Still growlin' at his old lady, though maybe there's been enough offstage "answer songs" that he figured shifting to classy covers was the better part of valor, for a while. But he's still the old soldier of love and theft, slogging through the moonlight. But yeah, hope this portends at least a stylistic shift in forthcoming albums of originals, like the country blues collections did, good call.
