very ironic that this year come up at the same time ILM is revealing the Nirvana results thread.

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 November 2015 01:50 (eight years ago) link

and four Nirvana songs in the Top 40, wow.

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 November 2015 01:53 (eight years ago) link

sorry 5 songs, missed one.

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 November 2015 01:55 (eight years ago) link

One of these 3:

A Tribe Called Quest - Check the Rhime
Bonnie Raitt - I Can't Make You Love Me
Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)

The Choice Is Yours.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 12 November 2015 02:02 (eight years ago) link

Would be hard for me to vote against "Unfinished Sympathy," so I likely won't. The P.M. Dawn and Richard Thompson songs are deserving of more love than they'll prob get though.

Will throw together a Spotify playlist on Friday (swamped til then) if no one else has done so.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 12 November 2015 02:05 (eight years ago) link

1. "O.P.P."
2. "I Can't Make You Love Me"
3. "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
4. "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'"
5. "Only Shallow"
6. "Mind Playing Tricks on Me"
7. "Scenario"

clemenza, Thursday, 12 November 2015 02:14 (eight years ago) link

Missed "The Choice Is Yours"--love that too.

clemenza, Thursday, 12 November 2015 03:16 (eight years ago) link

Hey, I'll give 1952 Vincent Black Lightning some love.

SlimAndSlam, Thursday, 12 November 2015 03:25 (eight years ago) link

Either the Richard Thompson, "Summer Babe," "Scenario," or the Slint.

I actually ended up voting for RT, the biggest emotional response for me that's not related to nostalgia. Do I regret my vote already? .....maybe.

Tom Violence, Thursday, 12 November 2015 03:36 (eight years ago) link

This is a tough one. Good list.

Geto Boys vs Slint
decisions, decisions...

billstevejim, Thursday, 12 November 2015 04:28 (eight years ago) link

At least 10 of these songs have been played on modern rock stations a total of 100 trillion times.

billstevejim, Thursday, 12 November 2015 04:37 (eight years ago) link

haha, so true. i'm actually surprised there isn't more Pearl Jam on here like "Even Flow" or something like "Black" as you could not have a bigger record in the US in 1991.

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 November 2015 06:23 (eight years ago) link

SCENARIO

Although if Black had been an option, I'd be tempted

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Thursday, 12 November 2015 07:29 (eight years ago) link

1. Mind Playing Tricks on Me
2. Unfinished Sympathy
3. In Bloom

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 12 November 2015 07:52 (eight years ago) link

Viscerally I'm saying "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "Losing My Religion," but then again I think "Blind Willie McTell" is one of the greatest performances ever put to tape.

Sam Weller, Thursday, 12 November 2015 10:59 (eight years ago) link

A good proportion of my favourite tunes from this year (and indeed for the next three or four years) are from the UK underground dance scene, so I'm voting for Unfinished Sympathy for representing that the most. Plus it's a glorious song.

Oh shit, I didn't see Papua New Guinea! Too late to change now.

Wasn't Dirt this year too? Or am I a year too early?

Bee OK, Thursday, 12 November 2015 15:39 (eight years ago) link

A seminal musical year for me, but at least half of this list is lackluster compared to other stuff that was released in '91. I think it'll have to be MBV for me, which feels weird because that's not really representative of what I was listening to at the time.

Puddin' Taint (Old Lunch), Thursday, 12 November 2015 15:45 (eight years ago) link

xpost Yeah, Dirt was '92.

Puddin' Taint (Old Lunch), Thursday, 12 November 2015 15:46 (eight years ago) link

Acclaimed Music's full list indicates depth of the bench not necessarily reflected by the top 40.

xpost Taphead would be my laughingstock choice, tho of course anything from that record would get my vote

Maybe the prob is there's no consensus focal track on that album

were they singles?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 12 November 2015 16:44 (eight years ago) link

Not everything here is a single!

Will vote THKW because imo GMC is maybe the third or fourth best track on its (six-track) album. TJKW vs Don, Aman would be muuuch harder

Some of the things wrong with this list: no "Iesha", no "New Jack Hustler", no Karyn White or Vanessa Williams. No "Love...Thy Will Be Done"!!!! (maaaaaybe my favorite song of the year). No Soundgarden.

Puddin' Taint (Old Lunch), Thursday, 12 November 2015 16:53 (eight years ago) link

I love To Here Knows When but Loveless is just such a capital-A Album to me that it'd never occur to me to vote for a single track off of it as a standout (of either the album or the year).

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:54 (eight years ago) link

not sure Dylan counts as a '91 song since it's from '83 but great all the same

so many good songs on this list!

will probably go with bonnie raitt

I can understand voting Scenario but the correct answer here, and there is one, i... hang on, NO, not going down that route, it'll just end up turning into some version of "Duck Season! No, Wabbit Season! No, Duck Season!" etc. Hehehehe! :P

These are my two likeliest candidates as well. Maybe one of the Nirvana songs could compete.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:03 (eight years ago) link

Not a fan of this list either. Where's the KLF?! Still, a few great tracks though. I'm still undecided between "Unfinished Sympathy" and "Papua New Guinea", both of which are wonderful!

daavid, Thursday, 12 November 2015 21:38 (eight years ago) link

Not gonna vote for it, but I always liked that Bonnie Raitt song, especially the outro.

billstevejim, Friday, 13 November 2015 02:51 (eight years ago) link

"Summertime" is so much better than that Billy Bragg or Crowded House songs.

billstevejim, Friday, 13 November 2015 02:54 (eight years ago) link

I'm going to go off the beathen path here and vote for "Higher Than the Sun." Mainly for how many times I heard the song while high in 1991.

songs i loved that i don't think i have ever heard before, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," "I Can't Make You Love Me" and "Papua New Guinea." and the oh yeah moment went to "The Choice Is Yours (Revisited)" as it was, so that the name of that song.

thread of getting sw0le and lena jokes (Eric H.), Tuesday, 17 November 2015 02:50 (eight years ago) link

Is there anything from Loveless that could have been on the list that *wouldn't* have won?

Not trolling, mind you (i love that album as much as anyone), but I was really expecting something a little more single-y to win, ya know?

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 17 November 2015 02:53 (eight years ago) link

i know Loveless is huge as it should be. saw the Loveless tour, two times in three nights in Hollywood back in 1991. i just expected a well known single to take this and not two tracks from My Bloody Valentine. so a pleasant surprise.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 02:59 (eight years ago) link

or what cryptosicko said.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 03:00 (eight years ago) link

Me, at the beginning of this thread: "Would be hard for me to vote against "Unfinished Sympathy," so I likely won't. The P.M. Dawn and Richard Thompson songs are deserving of more love than they'll prob get though."
