worst movie tie-in rap songs

feel like this so much a 90s thing. for eligibility I included rap songs that directly invoked plot points from the movie - regardless of whether the song was actually sanctioned by or written *for* the film. Didn't have to be popular either (doubt anybody remembers the Run DMC tune). I realize Will Smith kind of owns this category, but there are some strong contenders from elsewhere. only included the worst of the worst so sorry if you wanted to vote for Outkast's "Land of 100 Drums".

didn't include Bobby Brown's "On Our Own", despite the fact that it has a rap section. sorry!

Poll Results

Addams Family Whoomp is the greatest song ever recorded

welltris (crüt), Sunday, 8 November 2015 13:35 (eight years ago) link

until this morning I had no idea it existed.

re: the Hammer song, that clown actually performed his Addam's Groove song the time I saw him in 2009. most people were singing along too - it was like this weird alternate reality

I'm telling you, I saw a hand.

Anyway, anything involving Vanilla Ice is automatically the worst thing in a group of things, so that.

Boy, those are some really bad ones. I remember all of them. Oh, my.

austinato (Austin), Sunday, 8 November 2015 16:20 (eight years ago) link

Partners in Kryme is still amazing to me as it appears it's the only song they ever recorded.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 8 November 2015 16:23 (eight years ago) link

the Run DMC one was just weird because it was them doing a shitty rap over the original theme and nobody remembers it because of the Bobby Brown song that was far more popular.

that Addams Family got not one but TWO rap songs for the movie franchise is a little o_O

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 8 November 2015 16:25 (eight years ago) link

Great list - but no LL Cool J "Deepest Bluest"? No Kris Kross "Rugrats Rap"?!

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 8 November 2015 16:30 (eight years ago) link

always the write-in option. to be honest I didn't know those existed (and now I'm curious).

actually did know the Kriss Kross one but forgot about it.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 8 November 2015 16:30 (eight years ago) link

"Deepest Bluest" is amazing. Like the Will Smith cuts (well, besides Nod Ya Head), it would never make a "worst" list for me, but it's really something else. Sort of picking up plot points from the movie, but sort of not, so that it almost sounds like he wrote the rap from an earlier, very different version of the script where LL Cool J's character got turned into a human-shark hybrid and started killing everybody. I think the idea is supposed to be that he's writing from the perspective of the movie's powered-up GMO sharks but it doesn't quite add up.

Awesome poll. These songs are all horrible!

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 8 November 2015 19:12 (eight years ago) link

I remember going to see TMNT II when it came out and Vanilla Ice's name was on the theater marquee! A ten year old me was thinking "Wow first SNL now the Ninja Turtles movie!" maybe Ice should have joined the Going Out of Our Shells Tour. Anyways "T.U.R.T.L.E. Power" was the better song.

Always felt like the Turtles (being based on NYC in the 80s) should have leaned more on b boy culture overall. There's one or two scenes in the movies where they are doing breakdance moves while fighting foot clan ninjas, that kind of stuff should've been all throughout, like a Jackie Chan comedy or something.

I had "Too Legit to Quit" on cassette and it had the bonus version of "Addams Groove" on there. Loved it. Was confused about "Ok Fester, take me to the bridge!" cos I didn't know a bridge was a musical term, I thought it was recorded live and possibly w the Addams Family cast on stage and there was a bridge they were all moving towards.

Bobby Brown's "On Our Own" is too much fun to say it is the worst.

Gonna ultimately vote "Ninja Rap" even though it really made the end of TMNT2 extra special. Probably one of the latter Will Smith tunes is my least favorite but Vanilla Ice is a supreme hack compared to Smith.

Addams Family Values is a great movie. Just watched it last week

welltris (crüt), Sunday, 8 November 2015 20:02 (eight years ago) link

It is good, it's just a little unfortunate how close to the first movie's plot it is, with Fester once again manipulated by a cynical outsider mother/lover figure.

Didn't know about the Kris Kross song. I thought the main Rugrats related song was "Take Me There" by Mya and Blackstreet featuring a rap by Ma$e and Blinky Blink.

MarkoP, Sunday, 8 November 2015 23:13 (eight years ago) link

I assume "Ghetto Superstar" is also exempt from this poll, by being an actual good song.

MarkoP, Sunday, 8 November 2015 23:14 (eight years ago) link

Anything with Ol' Dirty is exempt from being bad.

austinato (Austin), Sunday, 8 November 2015 23:21 (eight years ago) link

Yea no fuckin way would I nom that one.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 8 November 2015 23:38 (eight years ago) link

oh shit, i forgot all about that mya/blackstreet/etc. rugrats number. wow.

it may be the case that "rugrats rap" was something created only for like nicktoons interstitials/filler? i can't confirm that it has anything to do with the movie at all, which would make sense since i can't imagine kris kross being recruited for a film soundtrack in 1998. though other credits include "no doubt feat. elvis costello" - a sure-fire combo for the toddlers - and busta rhymes declaring "i am reptar, hear me roar / i am reptar, the king of dinosaurs":

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 9 November 2015 02:53 (eight years ago) link

wow, that song is nuts. this is my best effort at cleaning up the even wronger lyrics available online. note that when he says "blow dry your asshole" on the chorus, "hole" is wiped out but "ass" is unmistakable. this has to be the weirdest kids' movie soundtrack i can think of.

What be goin' on over here?
Coming through top speed, you better stand clear
Ooh! You know better beware or step to the clear
We 'bout to blast right out from here --- Excitement!
Yes, I hope you know we come through
To cause chaos like Darth Vader, turn on your radar
On the downhill, racing, I'm holding my head
The situation may be peril (?) check on the toyset
I am Reptar - hear me roar!
I am Reptar - the King of Dinosaurs!

Oh ya but sure I done but dirty
Still racing downhill like we doing a buck thirty
Ha! Oh my name is Herbie, the race car going inside the demolition derby
Reptar you must be really losing a screw
Because I think we losing control so what we gonna do?
Tell me what we gonna do - Check it!

What are we doing and where we gonna go?
So fast, it's gonna blow dry your ass hole!
Get out the fast lane as if you're moving to slow!
On your marks, get set, ready, go!

Ah, don't panic! We really don't need static from downhill
Crazy rides running through 50 traffic
Ha! Made it dramatic, I've just about really had it with
Situations like these, I never make it a habit
I am Reptar, the perfect children's toy!
For every girl every boy, I know, they overly joyed (???)
So, movin' so fast I hear the wind whistling
Faster than a missile then
HELP IF YOU LISTENIN'! (No!)

In a minute we'll be soon to be arriving
Strivin' to put a end to all this reckless driving
I don't mean to bore you but
I am Reptar and I will destroy you!
Just like an image, before we end up diminished
I hope that we can slow the pace down before the ride finish
Reptar you must be new to this crew
Because I think we losing control, so what we gonna do?

Ahh! Hold it! Where we going? What's happening here?
Where we going? What's wrong with Reptar? Ahh! Ahh! Ahh!
What's going on Reptar? I'm losing control here!
What happening? Everybody put on your seat belts! Ahh!

We need to angle this situation the tight way
So that we can handle the situation the right way
Ooh - What does it take?
Wonder, will happen, we press this button (????)
Just to stop Reptar, he started shooting fire
How many things are there around for us to destroy?
Maybe fire isn't the best idea for a children's toy
Reptar you must be losing a screw
Because I think we losing control again so what we gonna do?

Maybe fire isn't the best idea for a children's toy

^^^ someone who's seen the movie, help me out, is there a plot point where the rugrats, playing with Reptar, get horribly burned and/or set the house on fire?

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 9 November 2015 05:16 (eight years ago) link

I remember the Meteor Man song but only from it's "you can't stop this!" interjections which were featured in the trailer. Listening to it now - kind of just painfully generic. Interesting that Big Hat Ray Ray sings the bridge. Weird how little footage from the movie shows up in the video.

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 9 November 2015 05:20 (eight years ago) link

yeah I was hoping for lols and it was really just boring overall.

the Method Man Riddler song was something I didn't even know existed until 2 years ago

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 9 November 2015 05:22 (eight years ago) link

yeah, i'm not sure how i missed out on that til now. it's not bad! if it didn't have all the irritating intercuts to jim carrey and the batmobile, i would assume this was just a minor meth album track that's kind of vaguely borrowing from batman imagery.

The thing that baffles me most about that Busta Rhymes track is the Big Beat style production. Who produced that thing?

was a favorite in my cd collection
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Music-Inspired-By-The-Motion-Picture-Wild-Wild-West/master/79113

starts off great
Jim West, desperado
Rough rider, no you don't want nada
None of this, six-gunnin this, brother runnin this
Buffalo soldier, look it's like I told ya
Any damsel that's in distress
Be outta that dress when she meet Jim West
Rough neck so go check the law and abide
Watch your step or flex and get a hole in your side
Swallow your pride, don't let your lip react
You don't wanna see my hand where my hip be at
With Artemus, from the start of this, runnin the game
James West, tamin the West, so remember the name

nas co-wrote some of the songs on big willie style, this verse has a bit of his style in it imo, would basically like to hear a nas cover but can almost hear it in my head
