Curxes - Verxes (2015)

So this, their debut album, came out about three months ago... I remember first reading about this lot about four years ago, so clearly they've been working on this album for quite some time, and they even did some remix work for Chvrches (they remixed 'Recover', if I remember correctly)

Simply put, this album is absolutely brilliant in my humble opinion - of course, the Chvrches album isn't out yet, so for the moment this is my favourite electronic/synthpop album of the year so far, and one I'll definitely be nominating for the ILM EOY poll!

You can find the album on both Spotify and Bandcamp, and here's one of my personal highlights...

Sounds like Charli XCX but instead of it being her voice it's Kate Jackson's from The Long Blondes. That song, anyway.

Chvrches + Charli XCX = Curxes, then? Rock math has gone self-aware?

lol

They don't sound anything like Chvrches, though... and this is just one song from the album.

Thought I'd absolutely loathe it based on the name but it's quite close to being good. Needs even more mad synth! But yeah, I kinda dig it. Do they have any weirder or grander stuff?

Skimming through the album just now. There's such a limited sonic palette (heavy drum machines, tinny guitar, headache synths) that it will probably be the only time I ever listen to it. The songs aren't good enough to get above all that shit.

they kinda remind me of sleigh bells but more linear

Yeah, that's not far off.

more linear than Sleigh Bells is not a good sign if you're me tbh

the really rubbish track titles aren't exactly screaming out to me, and i'm a good audience to this sort of stuff normally

'spectre' is sort of ok

this is just making me miss late of the pier tbh

The "limited sonic palette", as you put it, is one of the reasons I like it so much... obviously, I disagree with you about the songs being poor!

'haunted gold' has something about it

there's definitely something here, needs better songwriting tho

Kind of wish I hadn't looked at their Facebook. I was intrigued by Avant-Guarded but didn't click with what I heard of the album.
