I like how she debuts with a slow one instead of trying to impress the kids with a banger for which she might be accused of sounding "dated."
also: "Lonely" and "Making Love in the Rain" are good influences.

no sleep is pretty insipid. the come-ons in the lyrics sound completely tired and workwoman-like. why is anyone excited about this? and i used to be a massive janet fan.
― StillAdvance, Friday, 24 July 2015 15:53 (eight years ago) link
You have heard the stuff that made you a "used to be" fan right? That "No Sleeep" isn't 20 Y.O. is cause for celebration.
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 24 July 2015 16:05 (eight years ago) link
Also, it's chill af.
yeah the fact that it's kind of pleasant and unassuming and maybe, if we're being generous, more in line with her '90s midtempo stuff, is pretty reassuring just because she was really flailing around stylistically with those last few albums. curious to see what the rest of the record sounds like and if this is just a buzz single for something else soon to come.

Would've pruned one or two songs off side two of this album, but otherwise it's so much more consistent than I expected from her by now.
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:45 (eight years ago) link
"Well Traveled" feels like Janet covering The Lumineers
"Gon' B Alright" in comparison is like a lightning bolt, definitely enhanced due to following an outright slog
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:45 (eight years ago) link
I like that they make Janet's voice sound like a squeezebox organ in "Well Traveled." Don't like the Lumineers undertones.

I thought "Runaway" was a better meta-comment on her stardom and her relationship w/a mass audience than "All For You," but maybe I love "The Glow of Love" too much for me settle.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, October 5, 2015 3:20 PM Bookmark
I've never liked "All For You" even slightly, but I immediately thought "Glow of Love" was amazing when I heard it years later. Really the only AFY single I like that much is "Someone to Be My Lover". "Doesn't Really Matter" is ok I guess. I didn't like it at the time. I guess AFY has had the disadvantage for me of coming out during my underground rap purist phase, so I've never been able to hear it with ears that were both fresh and open to it.
For my money, Damita Jo is her best post-Velvet Rope album.

― lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 12:02 (eight years ago) link
in general, re the all for you talk, i think this album is pretty comparable to it quality-wise, as is discipline, though the best songs on each of those are really different, as are the less compelling moments. all of them feel a bit overlong, it's not just that pruning them would have got rid of the inessential songs but made them a more coherent front-to-back experience - nothing post-AFY seems to merit its epic length to me
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 12:05 (eight years ago) link
it's funny what a 7-yr-hiatus will do though; there was a pre-release expectation for this to be Peak Janet which didn't exist for her last couple of albums
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 12:06 (eight years ago) link
when she was hugely successful she released albums every 3-4 years, so the way she started releasing albums every 2 years as her sales were dropping really made it feel like a frantic flailing downward spiral. i think probably everyone needed some time away to miss her.
― some dude, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 14:59 (eight years ago) link

― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 15:00 (eight years ago) link
for janet: social media landscape changed drastically, cultural interests shifted, whole generation grew up without seeing her as anything but an oldies artist, lotsa reasons but also the album is amazing
― a literal scarecrow on a quaint porch (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 15:01 (eight years ago) link
It's aight. A few really good songs but I think people are overrating this because they want to see Janet back on top.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 22:17 (eight years ago) link
Yes, but it's also a great album with at least four amazing songs which is better than a 2015 janet album has any right to be imo.

I think that right up until the penultimate song this is a great album. I don't think it is as good as the run from Control through The Velvet Rope. I will be featuring it in heavy rotation for the rest of the year.
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Thursday, 8 October 2015 14:53 (eight years ago) link
Upthread I said there's no shame at all that Janet (or anyone else) will never match Control > RN1814 > janet. > Velvet Rope

Fun show in Minneapolis last night. Jam & Lewis were there, and the mayor declared it Janet Jackson Day. I would've liked to hear more of the new songs, but the only real disappointment was when the pre-show DJ played (apparently by accident) a few seconds of Jazmine Sullivan's "Let it Burn," then cut it short. It might've slowed the energy a bit but I was so itching to hear it.
