ie. What music service allows the highest cut of money to go right to the artist?

streaming or mp3 downloads/cd etc

only way to make sure is to buy it directly from them at a show

AI wonder if any bands are bold enough to just have alink on their site "give us free money" via paypal for all the mp3's people have gotten for free

Bandcamp does things very reasonably and gives artists a lot of control

I've thought for a while that this would be a really great idea. With the collapse of the music industry, why not actively and explicitly promote patronage as an option for sustaining artists' livelihoods?

Most venues take a cut of t-shirt/keychain/whatever sales, but few take a cut of record/CD sales.

I saw Rocket From The Tombs at one such venue a few years ago. David Thomas circumvented the venue's 20% grab of CD sales by sitting on the stage and personally selling CDs to fans.

ime, the percentage they take of sales is across the board, records/shirts/etc.

Yeah, I wasn't 100% sure. A friend of mine works for a national touring band and told me that they try to avoid one particular venue in the northeast because the hall specifically takes a cut of CD and LP sales, and that this is apparently rare.

the situations i am familiar with where this is the case are university gigs

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Friday, 8 May 2015 17:35 (eight years ago) link

that's nuts and sad. none of the clubs we play have ever suggested such a thing but we're small potatoes.

Οὖτις, Friday, 8 May 2015 17:37 (eight years ago) link

it's usually larger venues where the band gets a guarantee

Patreon is probably brilliant when it works but how many artists have a super dedicated fanbase like that? I can't think of a single artist I like enough to make them a regular expense.

I will say I have never felt that people deserve a ton of money for making pop music as a full time job - I think 2$ is a reasonable price for a downloaded album

Musicians who want money :ie a red ribbon around the trunk of a Birch tree to ward off negative energy. Hang Birch twigs over a cradle to protect a newborn from psychic harm. Use Birch bark as magical parchment to keep writings safe.

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Friday, 8 May 2015 20:58 (eight years ago) link

Brich for wealth in the msuic busineass??

The Birch Moon is a time of rebirth and regeneration. As the Solstice passes, it is time to look towards the light once more. When a forested area burns, Birch is the first tree to grow back. The Celtic name for this month is Beth, pronounced beh. Workings done in this month add momentum and a bit of extra "oomph" to new endeavors. The Birch is also associated with magic done for creativity and fertility, as well as healing and protection.
