Bim Thomas' pre-Obnox stuff is great too. Bassholes were one of the best two-man blues-punk bands around (and one of the first before it got trendy for a second there) and This Moment in Black History had some moments of brilliance.

one month passes...

Saw them open for Death last night and they stole the show despite being a bit uneven, and the vocals not miked loud enough. I like the approach with Thomas either singing & playing guitar accompanied by the drummer and laptop dj, or rapping over the drummer and dj. Quite a great guitar roar from him and from the dj. Could have done without his Cheech & Chong-esque babbling about pot, but was intrigued by his other busy between-song comments only some of which I could follow. I think I heard him say "heard Steve Albini, Barry Henssler, and Tim Kerr, and I was thinking what do those white boys have in life that could make them so mad..." Then he laughed.

Been trying to find a music writer to write about Obnox. But none of my regulars have never heard of it …

You need some new writers.

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20168-boogalou-reed/

They've been reviewed in Pitchfork but they aren't on Spotify and don't seem to have a pr company working for them and they may not tour as much as some. Last night, the crowd for them was much smaller than for the headliner, although that might be people just getting there late.

I saw that show as well (sorry I didn't catch up with you, curmudgeon) - this is me with Lamont, the main dude (I have seen Obnox alternatively listed as a solo project for Bim and a band; maybe it morphed from one to the other).

I thought the show was fantastic! Never saw the band before and didn't own any of the Obnox stuff (although I got caught up buying all six full-length LPs from them; goddamned they're/he's prolific!) but it fits into what I expected from the guy.

OBNOX is dead, long live NOX!

Cleveland guitarist/vocalist Lamont Thomas has officially changed the name of his long running no-fi Afropunk / Hip-Hop hybrid OBNOX to its longtime nickname NOX
