had a dream just now that there was a song here that a load of ilm's dance massive responded to with an ecstatic 'tat tat tat' and i booted it up, prepared to roll my eyes, and it came in with a mighty swoosh and quite a slow 'tat tat tat' drum machine swipe, then settled into the most purely aquatic & hymnal ambient dance anthem, all was still and calm, i was back in my childhood bedroom and the walls were painted a luminous deep blue, then i awoke wondering if that song existed and whether it would make this poll

Voted for DJ Sprinkles, I'm glad it made the top 100. Nice to see Mingus here too, though "Black Saint" is not my favourite, I voted for a different track. And I was similarly confused as Charlie H on why it was nominated as a whole album, since it's clearly a multi-part suite.

Marquee Moon is great. Totally epic.

I wonder how many people slagging Marquee Moon were cooing over A Sailor's Life earlier in the thread, if there's one guitarist Tom Verlaine strongly resembles it's Richard Thompson.

of course "marquee moon" is epic but it is one of those 1000 page novels where many readers wish that it should end after the first chapter because after that nothing interesting happens anymore...

thinking of "marquee moon" i wonder if it would have been number one if everyone would have had a black list of songs which get minus points. there must be a reason why its assessment is quite controversial.

i am one of those tom, but "a sailor's life" is - as someone wrote before - a dyamic duel between violin and guitar and is full of inspiration, tension and delicacy whereas i find "marquee moon" boring, repetitive and unimaginative. maybe this evaluaton is unjust but one problem is of course that the expectation level for "marquee moon" was very high because of the critic's praise when i listened to it first about 20 years ago whereas i had more or less given up on fairport convention as their rather predictable standard chamber folk rock didn't prepare me for the originality and ingeniuty of "a sailor's life".

When I was voting, I decided to go for songs that had somehow 'earned' their length. Some tracks deserved the vote due to their many movements and segues and rooms-within-rooms (Zercon, for instance). Others were voted for the way they developed an atmosphere over time (Sunn O)))'s 'Alice'.
Marquee Moon was third on my ballot. It neither has rooms-within-rooms nor does it develop an atmosphere over time, but it's a rare example of a rock track that works in this monolithic way. So many memorable melodies and moments that get returned to over its course. It wouldn't be the song it is were it not for its length and I rarely think, when listening to it, that it's dragging or going on too long. It's only when I'm putting together a playlist or mixtape that I become aware of how long it is.

Jeff Buckley was my no.1 and wasn't a tactical vote at all. My thinking was much the same as dog latin's - I want these songs to do something with their length, not just hit a spot and stay there. I took Marquee Moon (and Autobahn) off my ballot for this reason. I want these tracks to build to something or go other places. If Torn Curtain had been long enough I'd have given it a vote. Walk On By had been my original no.1 but I ended up marking it down a little bit because, awesome as it is, I felt it didn't quite peak like, say, Sinnerman does.

So The Way Young Lovers Do was my final pick as no.1 because it does the most with least - just voice, guitar and a lot of echo. It's an amazing thing, leaves me all a-shiver by the time it reaches that penultimate chord. I wonder what it was like happening upon that gig, probably having no idea who this guy was or that there was even somebody playing - let alone that he was about to drop the best epic of alltime. My ballot in full:

i hardly ever vote tactical so my number one keith jarrett's sapporo encore is my real number one. i must have listened to it a hundred times when i was about 18-20. keith jarrett's solo improvisations in the seventies totally grabbed me. when jarrett had a good day and the improvisation worked, it was truly transcendental.

I don't know how a vote for "Homage to Charles Parker" can be seen as tactical — I knew it wasn't going to get any other votes. It's just the most beautiful, evocative, emotional 17:59 in recorded music imo.

As a self-professed Groop dork I should really check this out one of these days.

I think the reaction to MM as #1 has less to do with its inherent qualities as it does with people thinking it's a perfectly lovely song but meriting such a wide gap between Eddie Hazel's tortured/ecstatic emotional gasps? kind of deal.

my marquee moon highlights:

1) getting the 12" single and playing it at Bri's house
2) getting the cd version and discovering it now has a full ending
3) getting the remaster and now there's an alternate version with a different solo

Would not pick one of these over the others...

I once heard "Marquee Moon" on an AM station while driving through western Ohio (this was maybe 5-6 years ago). Being unexpectedly hit with this song on the radio is one thing; hearing it on AM heightened the mystery of the song considerably.

If I'd known two other people would actually vote for that Polvo song, I'd've put it higher on my ballot. That song is a monster.

I think if you're listening to MM for the first time circa 2015, a lot of what's it's doing has been finally digested in the last decade of pop, post-Strokes, post-Franz Ferdinand, post-Phoenix - the way the tone of the different guitars trade off, the little filigree licks, the lack of blues in a non-thrashy way. Marquee Moon didn't really have guiding effect on overall presentation of dual-guitar bands between 78 and 98. While it's always been well adored, those that adored it were adding more noise or digital delay or compressed dynamics. It paved the way for U2 and Sonic Youth and MBV, but those bands took bits of the approach. Around 2000 is when I really started hearing Television borrowings wholesale, just like Gang of Four.

This poll got me to listen closely to Hendrix again, but Stevie Ray Vaughn really killed Voodoo Chile dead for me. I just cant hear Hendrix with an open mind. Something similar has happened to Television. Would likely have been on my list 10 years ago! But I didn't even feel like listening.

well for me Mei by Echolyn had to be #1 because it's one of my favorite albums ever and I think it's in the spirit of the ballot to value things that are long and epic (compared to say, Autechre's "Rsdio", which I also voted for, but it's one that would've worked at say, 7 minutes)

my one big mistake on this was not nominating "USA" by Dan Deacon. cuz I think that would've been a top 3 pick for me.

The Crown was one of the last tunes I had to cut from my shortlist to trim it down to 50, now I feel bad for leaving it out, because it is awesome.

But my vote for Biotrip wasn't tactical, I just wanted my #1 to be over 20 minutes so it's truly epic, and that's the best 20+ minute tune I know.

My highest unplaced track (the live "Little Johnny Jewel") isn't on spotify, but "Meet me at the Jailhouse" is.

i discovered the phantastic cortney tidwell track via the poll, her voice reminds me a lot of carolyn crawley (shelleyan orphan, this mortal coil), so pure and direct. "don't let stars keep us tangled up" is one of those comfort giving songs, almost like many neil young songs but in a completely different, more shining way.

the dissidenten were an offspring of embryo one of the early jazzy krautrock bands founded 1969 in munich (two years after amon düül). embryo had already been travellng a lot, they were probably the first world music band, the dissidenten which were called embryo's dissidenten in the beginning tried to appeal to a wider public and merged arab and indian music with dance pop. they were great but in the end they didn't have the success they should have had.

Assembled in the spirit of this poll, basically, although no strict 10-minute rule. I've never cared about streaming; I rarely listen to music when I'm sitting at the computer. Music in a car, though, life would be considerably less interesting without it--especially long songs, especially driving out in the country.

Gawd, this thread is a goddamn treasure trove! My next few days (weeks) will be all about zoning out to long tracks.

Very surprised that Blue Train is above All Blues, which I figured was a shoe-in for the top jazz track. Very surprised Deep Purple on there at all, didn't think they'd maintained a following comparable to Floyd or the Doors.
