i'm not downloading the app but the single should be out today anyway

hopefully "fourfiveseconds" will be nowhere near this

i'm hyped, she went away for a while and made me miss her

i like "fourfiveseconds" a lot and i think her sounded needed to be refreshed after the last few albums... the whole aesthetic they pushed with that song really worked i thought

"bitch better have my money" sounded a bit generic for her off the snippets, like "pour it up" but less good. we'll see of course.

"higher" sounds revelatory to me tho http://www.missinfo.tv/index.php/rihanna-previews-new-song-higher/

i am embarrassed to admit that i have come around on "fourfiveseconds"

dyl, Thursday, 26 March 2015 16:23 (nine years ago) link

also i'd like to say how much i enjoy that the 'r8' nickname has been so persistent/pervasive

oh damn this is nice

will be interested to see if pop radio bites at all, they've been pretty allergic to trap-ish beats :\

pour it up is a fine parallel, and def better

johnny crunch, Thursday, 26 March 2015 16:45 (nine years ago) link

xp gotta get them zings off in time

this is good stuff, although i still imagine the album will be one of rihanna's usual sonically/tonally schizophrenic affairs

are... are you saying you fucked a gazelle? (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 26 March 2015 16:46 (nine years ago) link

yeah this isn't anywhere near as good as "pour it up"

i don't dislike it but i'm dropping it in the same bucket as "all day" and "worst behavior" as drab and stagnant turn up songs that don't move me at all

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 March 2015 16:47 (nine years ago) link

lol i enjoy how she was talking up her aspiration to create 'timeless' music for this album and then puts this out tho :D

dyl, Thursday, 26 March 2015 16:50 (nine years ago) link

this is like "pour it up" as performed by "phresh out the runway" and not as good as either though still okay, on first listen

she's working very hard to make a non-hook catchy here

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 March 2015 17:20 (nine years ago) link

"fourfiveseconds" is trash and not because of the direction or the idea of rihanna over acoustic guitars (which has happened many times already) but because it literally sounds unfinished

"fourfiveseconds" great for all the Guster fans

i said it sounds automatically dated and of-its-moment (or of a moment a year or two ago) compared to her recent "I wanted songs that I could perform in 15 years" interview soundbyte, i'm not rushing to a verdict on whether i think the song is good or bad.

some dude, Thursday, 26 March 2015 19:06 (nine years ago) link

i feel like a lot of pop albums have been preceded by "this is my most personal/timeless to date" talk only for the lead single to be something like this, i assume it's trolling and am amused accordingly

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 March 2015 19:08 (nine years ago) link

Well, "This is my most personal" sells better to the public and your fanbase than "this is a collection of radio bangers and whatever StarGate and Dr. Luke had lying around their studio floor when I stopped by"

Greer, Monday, 30 March 2015 18:36 (nine years ago) link

Pop singers who specialize in thumpers use "personal" as a disinfectant to wipe the supposed impersonality of the machines or something (Madonna sued to say this shit all the time).

i like Rihanna right now. she sounds fresh. i don't have many problems with Bitch Better Have My Money, American Oxygen or FourFiveSeconds. BBHMM and American Oxygen are tops.

surm, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 13:46 (nine years ago) link

Pour It Up sounds very different to me, i wouldn't put it in the same bucket as Bitch Better Have My Money

surm, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 13:48 (nine years ago) link

Bitch Better Have My Money has grown on me 100%

American Oxygen is turgid trash, where is the Rihanna who slyly cheered against the US in every World Cup match

Still better than fourfiveseconds obv

lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 16:49 (nine years ago) link

american oxygen isn't a real rihanna song

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 7 April 2015 17:17 (nine years ago) link

who slyly cheered against the US

somehow i don't think that was exactly biting political commentary on her part, more like a troll (which, for the record, is fine as far as i'm concerned)

i wouldn't go far as to call "oxygen" trash but it's def not her lane.

bitch better have my money is like, dope. that's pretty much all i have to say about it. it's v Caribbean. and i think most people will be grateful that i have something to listen to besides Tinashe now.

i dunno, i'm a sucker for American Oxygen. i like her in front of that flag.

my new British intern asked that i play "Unfaithful" yesterday, i think we're going to get along just fine.

i'm hitting a bit of a wall when it comes to recommending songs to my nephew-in-law. He's 9, and gay, and out to his parents (awesome kid.) so he emails me song recommendations and vice versa, but i don't know where the line is. on the one hand, i don't want to recommend that he listen to "bitch better have my money," because he's like, 9. on the other hand, at our last Thanksgiving, he started singing Lana del Rey's "i fucked my way up to the top" in the middle of dinner. so. hard call.

surm, Thursday, 9 April 2015 13:41 (nine years ago) link

wow

what does he recommend to you? if he keeps up w/ music Rihanna is most likely already very on his radar so he may know it anyway?

johnny crunch, Thursday, 9 April 2015 13:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah i bet he does - he does listen to Rihanna. and his mom already told me that she really doesn't care about it. currently he's been into Marina and like, random Calvin Harris feature songs. so i'm trying to steer him in the right direction. but he's recommended some good shit in the past. finally got him to listen to Cassie Cassie.

eheh, reminds me of my girl cousins who were around that age a few years ago and during a family gathering were singing a very famous song in France at the time "Parle à ma main", including the disturbing line : "Les mecs ils sont tous nuls ils pensent qu'à nous mettre des doigts" (guys all suck, they only want to finger us") !

Unlike most revenge movies, it's not like she even runs into any obstacles in her path.

... (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 03:05 (eight years ago) link

smdh that this basic-ass revenge fantasy has had such acclaim

A swarm of antipathy (Re-Make/Re-Model), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 10:04 (eight years ago) link

Is this a revenge fantasy? I'm having trouble seeing that context, unless this guy messed up her credit. Just seems like a couple minutes of pretending you are in a movie.

Also why does she drag the box into the house by herself in the beginning, while for pretty much the rest of the video her friends are doing all the work while she strikes music video poses?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:12 (eight years ago) link

wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:03 (eight years ago) link

Don't get me wrong she is awesome and this is prob my favorite video she's done since Umbrella but feels sloppily written. I'm sure the artifice is part of the point. All the acting is really believable and it's well-shot. The cinematography is really clever, like that shot in the pool, the scene framed half-underwater.

Maybe it is too good a tease for a Rihanna-starring action movie that sadly isn't actually being made. I would much rather see this movie than any of the real movies coming out this year.

What are her motives? What's her relationship to these other characters? Maybe it is best there is no full movie or full explanation, the viewer can make their own. To everybody it can be something different.

The pop star doing a music video that looks like a movie seems big right now. This is the best one easily.

I don't necessarily think it means anything but is a compilation of subversive pop culture trends. Not going to read any thinkpieces just cos from a sheer surface pop art level this is really well done and everyone involved is believable and Which I guess explains every music video LOL

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 19:13 (eight years ago) link

The motive's pretty simple. He's her accountant. He stole her money. She wants it back. She gets it back by kidnapping his wife and then killing him. At the end she is covered in blood and money. It's not Last Year at Marienbad.

A swarm of antipathy (Re-Make/Re-Model), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 19:57 (eight years ago) link

It's both - literal torture porn which appeals to enough people to explain why we see the accountant's partner go through all that and not the accountant/Bitch himself - who's gonna get turned on/confused/outraged half as much by the latter?

mingalaba, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 05:20 (eight years ago) link

Kanye is exec producer of the album and has had a hand in all 3 singles so far, don't know if that means he's co-producing every song on the album. i get the sense she's deliberately stepping away from the Stargate/Dr. Luke/Terius/Ester Dean hit squad she usually deals with but maybe not.

Stargate have only had a couple semi-big U.S. hits (Fifth Harmony's "Worth It" and Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow") in the 2 years since wonderfully destroying their own formula on Ylvis's "The Fox." i liked their track on the last Ne-Yo album.

It's funny, I love a whole range of discordant music (CUT HANDS!), but I find her hook on this one unbearably annoying, near intolerable. I felt the exact same way about her umbrella song. I hear it all the time on the radio while driving, and I MUST turn it off immediately. Am I alone in this sentiment?
