This morning I found "So Polite," a cluttered rumination on being a woman in the face of society being a bunch of jerks. Needless to say I was hooked immediately.

The album from which that song came, Most Of The Boys, is out today and streaming on SoundCloud — it's very dissonant and crowded, although her voice is velvety smooth

This album really is excellent, those string arrangements! It reminds me quite a bit of the middle section of Nina Nastasia's 'Outlaster', especially 'What's Out There', and that's the only reference point I can reach for because you don't usually hear arrangements like this in pop music. Love it when stringed instruments are used as percussion.
It's not actually as dissonant as all that, although it does feel resolutely modernist in a way that a lot of chamber-pop rarely is. Apparently she's an established composer who has written for most of the major British orchestras, but this is her first record as a singer-songwriter.
Loving it anyway.

The sound of her voice reminds me a lot of Regina Spektor tbh, which is not a bad thing. The instrumentation is so exhilarating throughout the whole thing!

That's actually my least favourite on the album, I prefer the the more contemplative or dissonant ones.

I haven't heard the rest of this album but 'So Polite' reminds me a lot of My Brightest Diamond
