One obvious answer would be Prince - Purple Rain

Also the Beatles - Hard Day's Night and Help.

I love that Prince has FOUR of these

DJP, Friday, 27 February 2015 14:51 (nine years ago) link

the purple morricone !
although only purple rain and arguably parade really fit the criteria (best album or part of the canon !).

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 27 February 2015 14:57 (nine years ago) link

I can't really think of a recent artist/band in this situation.
Air have done some OSTs but I don't think it's considered in their best work (maybe the Virgin Suicide, though). Same thing for Daft Punk. and Sebastien Tellier.
Many french artists make OSTs actually !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:01 (nine years ago) link

Batman is ABSOLUTELY part of the canon and Graffiti Bridge is underrated IMO

DJP, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:02 (nine years ago) link

come on now !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:03 (nine years ago) link

All Prince's OSTs are about him. or a bat.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:05 (nine years ago) link

All of Prince's movies are about him! Or a bat.

DJP, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:05 (nine years ago) link

Maybe Tindersticks?

Definitely Tangerine Dream. Several of their film scores could be argued to be their best work.

Vangelis IMO

Ooh good call with Vangelis

DJP, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

Tindersticks I have no idea. Indeed good one with Vangelis since I actually thought he was mainly a soundtrack composer !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:21 (nine years ago) link

I have searched for someone in hiphop but couldn't find a good one.
it should be Kanye's next challenge !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:22 (nine years ago) link

Not Tindersticks.

Popol Vuh?

Arguably, Simon & Garfunkel (they share soundtrack space with Dave Grusin).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:28 (nine years ago) link

Jimmy Cliff

J. Sam, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:31 (nine years ago) link

I thought about Jimmy Cliff but there are many other acts on The harder they come.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:45 (nine years ago) link

hmmm Simon&Garfunkel is arguable indeed. But why not since it's mostly considered as one of their albums.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 27 February 2015 15:47 (nine years ago) link

Is More considered part of the Floyd canon? Seems to be ignored by the casual listener as far as I can tell.

Οὖτις Δαυ & τηε Κνιγητσ (Phil D.), Friday, 27 February 2015 16:21 (nine years ago) link

Cat Stevens?

lil urbane (Jordan), Friday, 27 February 2015 16:24 (nine years ago) link

if it's compiled from previously released material does it still count? The Graduate has only or couple (or one?) previously unreleased track on there.

piscesx, Friday, 27 February 2015 16:26 (nine years ago) link

Wang Chung an obvs choice. surely, easily THE most famous of their albums.
