arent they basically a jam band these days

adam, Friday, 6 February 2015 12:53 (nine years ago) link

Weren't they always a jam band? And anyway, that clip comes in at about 4 minutes.

how's life, Friday, 6 February 2015 12:56 (nine years ago) link

i feel like they teetered for a long time and then circa 2003 i saw them play to a packed room of baseball capped fratty LSU dudes who went fucking nuts for "cortez the killer" and even though that's not really bts' fault i've never forgiven them.

which is to say, are the albums since then worthwhile in this spotify era?

adam, Friday, 6 February 2015 14:48 (nine years ago) link

there is no enemy is pretty good, highlight being "life's a dream" which has a really good (IMO) guitar solo that is at least jam band-y in length if not in spirit

i liked You in Reverse

Ancient Melodies of the Future seems pretty great now, i think it suffered just because it came right after Keep it Like a Secret

speaking of which, i listened to that for the first in years, and wow was knocked out all over again, what an incredibly arranged rock album

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 February 2015 15:31 (nine years ago) link

It and the other one are so, so good. One of the few indie bands that really, dramatically benefited from a major label. Honestly, I have no idea what's up with Doug Martsch. His personality seems like a cross between J. Mascis and, I dunno, some crazy bunker dweller. Doesn't seem to talk much, doesn't seem to have anything to say, doesn't seem to have a sense of humor, lives his life out in ... Idaho? Still?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 February 2015 15:33 (nine years ago) link

i think he's just a let-the-music-do-the-talking kind of dude? i interviewed him way back when and he just seemed like a very normal, down to earth guy.
and he's definitely got a sense of humor -- some of the lyrics circa there's nothing wrong w/ love are pretty funny.
that said, haven't really been grabbed too much by anything since keep it like a secret.

tylerw, Friday, 6 February 2015 15:45 (nine years ago) link

I saw them in 2000 and it remains one of the best shows I've ever seen. I don't think I've ever listened to anything they released after that.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 6 February 2015 15:49 (nine years ago) link

I missed the last album altogether. You In Reverse got a lot of play from me back when it came out, but I haven't checked in with it since then. "Goin Against Your Mind" and "Conventional Wisdom" were the highlights for me.

how's life, Friday, 6 February 2015 15:52 (nine years ago) link

I didn't realize it had such a renfesty video though.

i saw them once at a festival and it was fantastic, then a couple of years later in a club and got bored and left early

global tetrahedron, Friday, 6 February 2015 15:56 (nine years ago) link

they aren't much in the way of onstage personality, but if you're in the mood for guitar jamz, they've never disappointed me.

tylerw, Friday, 6 February 2015 15:59 (nine years ago) link

i remember dragging my girlfriend at the time to go and see them in about 2005. i remember her being bored and rolling her eyes and me losing her on purpose so i could get as close as i could to the stage in order to geek out over Doug's guitar playing. Perfect From Now On remains one of my all time favourite albums, though i haven't played it in a while...

charlie h, Friday, 6 February 2015 16:00 (nine years ago) link

There Is No Enemy was really strong. Martsch is an unusually good lyricist for someone who's known as a guitar guy.

Simon H., Friday, 6 February 2015 16:09 (nine years ago) link

I like You in Reverse a lot. Gets played a lot still today, especially when driving.

Dinsdale, Friday, 6 February 2015 16:19 (nine years ago) link

The most recent album had at least one of my favorite songs of theirs, Pat.

I saw them a ton of times in the 90s. I caught their most recent tour and I did not care for it. The word that came to mind was lumbering, but not in a cool Crazy Horse way. They just gave off an old and slow vibe, which is not nice but maybe it was an off night.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 6 February 2015 16:23 (nine years ago) link

it's basically a whole new band at this point, right?

tylerw, Friday, 6 February 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link

I saw them play this year and it was great set. Very tight, less focused on jams and more on playing through all the classics. There was a point between the release of There Is No Enemy and ~2012 where they were really sailing into full jam band territory, but it's been reined in.

Will always love these dudes.

Tomás Piñon (Ryan), Friday, 6 February 2015 16:47 (nine years ago) link

You in Reverse was the first thing I ever heard by BTS and I still really like it (the first three songs especially). I couldn't really get into There Is No Enemy much.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 6 February 2015 17:42 (nine years ago) link

i didn't see them until 2005 and it was a pretty disappointing show. i was obsessed with perfect from now on and keep it like a secret, and what kornrulez6969 said upthread applied: "The word that came to mind was lumbering, but not in a cool Crazy Horse way."

i liked a few songs on you in reverse, haven't listened to there is no enemy.

Karl Malone, Friday, 6 February 2015 17:58 (nine years ago) link

I saw them twice in the mid-2000s and went to one show that was significantly better than the other. The one that wasn't as good wasn't all that bad, save for a momentum-disrupting film about an environmental activism which, god bless and all, but it took a while to get back up to cruising speed after that.

I used to see these guys a lot, and I'm not a jam guy, but the jammier their shows were usually the better they were. They put so much effort and practice and precision into those jams it's hard not to appreciate them. It got to the point where I was disappointed if they didn't finish the set with a 20-minute dazzler.

Anyway, they were almost always great, and even when they weren't they were still pretty good, which is true of their albums, too.

Evan R, Friday, 6 February 2015 18:22 (nine years ago) link

i'm sort of looking forward to this.

Bee OK, Saturday, 7 February 2015 04:25 (nine years ago) link

Since we're all chiming in with BtS live reports: I saw them in fall 2013, and they were fantastic. They did excellent covers of "How Soon Is Now" and Don't Fear the Reaper".

Song is fine though, in the way that it always keeps changing, bubbling and morphing into something else it reminds of PFNO.

Hinklepicker, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 09:31 (nine years ago) link

Track only has 422 listens on Soundcloud. I would have thought it would have had more.

calstars, Saturday, 28 February 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link

They've never had any good album covers since Ultimate Alternative Wavers, but the last few have been especially bad.

Been on a wee BTS binge this weekend and now increasingly thinking this new song is prime time.

I've been listening to this record nonstop the past few weeks. Really love the lyrics, though I'm still scratching my head at the "Maltesian Riot" part of "On the Way".

Tomás Piñon (Ryan), Tuesday, 26 May 2015 16:27 (eight years ago) link

I wish I liked this more. I keep trying but it doesn't take.

Wimmels, Tuesday, 26 May 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link

OK, I kept listening and my feeling is that this is the most poorly sequenced record I've heard in a long time. Switching sides A and B helps a little, but so many good songs are buried in the traditional 'album filler' slots

Wimmels, Friday, 10 July 2015 21:57 (eight years ago) link

Hadn't really noticed this. But I can kinda write off the bad sequencing as part of the album's scruffy charm.

Evan R, Friday, 10 July 2015 22:15 (eight years ago) link

The front 3 and last 2 songs are sticking for me, whereas the middle of the album blends into one slightly plodding dirge.

Mildly disappointed with this so far. Love 'So', though, which sounds like a lost Keep It Like a Secret track.
