DJ History Forum's Top 25 Disco Songs

Years ago I downloaded the podcast for this top 25, which was culled from an international poll of DJs. Can't seem to find the rundown anywhere on line, so you'll have to trust me that these were what came out on top. The playlist has been my idea of cred ever since.

That's a nice list, though the Sister Sledge and Change tune choices are a bit weird, "A Lovers' Holiday" and "Lost in Music" would've made more sense. Pretty music all of these are essential though, impossible to choose... The only one I don't know at all is Chantal Curtis, pretty weird to see such a lesser known name among those disco classics.

Tuomas, Sunday, 25 January 2015 21:44 (nine years ago) link

Oh wait, apparently Chantal Curtis is the same person as Michele, who released "Disco Dance" and "Can't You Feel It?" on West End Records... Now those are some awesome disco singles!

Tuomas, Sunday, 25 January 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

I'd vote for "I Love Music," but I don't know at least half those, so I'll abstain. Going to do some downloading from the list, though.

clemenza, Sunday, 25 January 2015 21:55 (nine years ago) link

voted "i feel love" but "was that all it was" is a great track too

the late great, Sunday, 25 January 2015 21:57 (nine years ago) link

impossible. voting for sylvester.

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Sunday, 25 January 2015 21:59 (nine years ago) link

Shameful admission: I don't really get the appeal of "Life On Mars."

Eric H., Sunday, 25 January 2015 22:55 (nine years ago) link

obv a classic list (two T-Connection songs though?), but only "I Feel Love", "Let's Start the Dance" and "Supernature" would be on my own top 25, so one of those

seandalai, Sunday, 25 January 2015 23:00 (nine years ago) link

oh "I Want Your Love" too

seandalai, Sunday, 25 January 2015 23:00 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I remember T Connection's reappearance at #3 being a genuine shock when I listened to it the first time.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 January 2015 23:05 (nine years ago) link

Great song tho.

brimstead, Monday, 26 January 2015 01:31 (nine years ago) link

Great list. Went with Supernature.

'angel in my pocket' isn't random at all wtf

like if u were gonna one up that you could maybe argue 'glow of love' but thats it

anyway this list is interesting, feel like it's very driven by a levan-centric view of disco maybe?

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 26 January 2015 02:48 (nine years ago) link

voted o'jays

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 26 January 2015 02:48 (nine years ago) link

IMO Chic's "everybody dance" >>> "i want your love"

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 26 January 2015 02:49 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, def Levan and Mancuso, who gets name-checked a couple times in the podcast iirc.

Eric H., Monday, 26 January 2015 02:52 (nine years ago) link

voted martin circus. interesting list.

no fucks given or implied (get bent), Monday, 26 January 2015 05:33 (nine years ago) link

(I meant "gosh it would be lovely to hear all these songs in order, many of which I do not know," not "I wish I'd heard this podcast" - don't put yourself out too much Eric! [obv I would listen to the podcast if it turned up too])

I agree with this but I still voted for 'I Want Your Love'.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 26 January 2015 10:12 (nine years ago) link

hard to choose. i feel love is a brilliant song but also a very boring choice now, and every rockist bore's favourite disco song, so im not going to vote for that one.

StillAdvance, Monday, 26 January 2015 10:39 (nine years ago) link

Missing 'Turn the Beat Around'. Surprised at how few I know in this list. Was a toss up between 'I Want Your Love' and 'Is It All Over My Face'. Went with the latter as it showcases just how strange and eccentric disco could be.

'angel in my pocket' isn't random at all wtf

"A Lover's Holiday" was their first single, their biggest hit, and arguably their best "proper" disco tune. "Angel in My Pocket" is good, but it wasn't even a single (only a b-side to "Searching"), so it definitely feels random here.

Tuomas, Monday, 26 January 2015 12:14 (nine years ago) link

On another day I could vote for 8 or 10 different ones, but today I'm voting "Standing in the Rain" because I only recently heard it for the first time and have been pretty obsessed with it it since.

andrew m., Monday, 26 January 2015 15:04 (nine years ago) link

contemplating "Let's Start The Dance" cause it's so anthemic or "Life On Mars" or Idris Muhammed cause the jazz-disco subgenre is sweet, often neglected. the mix of late Philly Soul records with Chic/Change style jams is verry NYC as others have said straight (so to speak) outta the Paradise Garage/Loft scenes

dude this list has lots of non-charting disco on it ... musically 'angel in my pocket' is way better than love holiday anyway; in chicago you're more liable to hear 'glow of love' (cause of the luther performance) on the radio than any of the above

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 26 January 2015 16:57 (nine years ago) link

I would pick "Hold Tight" from Change, but this is prob a convo for another thread, if there isn't one already.

andrew m., Monday, 26 January 2015 17:31 (nine years ago) link

Let's just agree that there are many "right" choices to make from Change's catalog, and the stunning "Angel in My Pocket" is but one of them.

Eric H., Monday, 26 January 2015 17:35 (nine years ago) link

(I do agree that "A Lover's Holiday" seems kind of tepid and more obviously Chic-copycatty in comparison, tho.)

Eric H., Monday, 26 January 2015 17:36 (nine years ago) link

"I Feel Love" since Black Ivory's "Mainline" didn't make it.

Change are severely undervalued, but "Angel in My Pocket" probably wouldn't make a personal Jocelyn Brown top 25.

Andy K, Monday, 26 January 2015 18:50 (nine years ago) link

Ugh absence of mainline actually disqualifies the entire list tbh

i downloaded a few of these i wasn't familiar with & have been jamming them since. life on mars, cathedrals, standing in the rain, could heaven ever be like this. all fantastic

flopson, Thursday, 5 February 2015 22:07 (nine years ago) link

Probably voting from these 5:

Sylvester, "Over and Over"
Geraldine Hunt, "Can't Fake the Feeling"
Gino Soccio, "Dancer"
Tamiko Jones, "Can't Live Without Your Love"
Martin Circus, "Disco Circus"

"Let's Start The Dance" was my #1 in the disco poll last year and i was the only one who voted for it

Rave Van Donk (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 22:08 (nine years ago) link

I Feel Love seems too obvious, Life on Mars too fusion, Bohannon too funk, Loose Joints too artsy, and yet my choice is probably one of these.

That Martin Circus track is new to me, and insane. I couldn't make it through the whole thing.

double leaping high five

hammer smashed nagls (mattresslessness), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:11 (nine years ago) link

"over and over" is such a tear-jerker for me when it comes to lyrical subject matter but that's only one of a few reasons i love it. it's such a great fusion of live energy and disco production, feels intimate and casual, and it's sylvester at his best vocally.

hammer smashed nagls (mattresslessness), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:21 (nine years ago) link

The sound is so tinny and, at the same time, so intimate.

Eric H., Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:24 (nine years ago) link

plus i imagine my friend l3roy who was a back-up dancer for sylvester stalking around and putting his arms around everyone's shoulders for the refrain. xp i don't know what you're talking about.

hammer smashed nagls (mattresslessness), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:25 (nine years ago) link

oh nevermind.

hammer smashed nagls (mattresslessness), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:27 (nine years ago) link

Every charge I've heard leveled at "Over and Over" -- that it's too top heavy, that it's too fast -- just makes me that much more protective of it.

Nice backstory to this 40 year old Walter Gibbons remix of Gladys Knight that has finally been released:

That was posted already in a more appropriate thread:

Cheers. Couldn't search so just chose the most appropriate from my bookmarks.

You can still search by going to Google and putting the text site:ilxor.com and your search term to the search field. I searched for site:ilxor.com gibbons, and that thread was the 3rd Google result.

Popped my disc of this countdown in my car recently and it's still a really well-rounded group of tunes.

Still no clue how "Do What You Wanna Do" ended up top 3, but it's a great chugger nonetheless.
