Sun Hotel's Rational Expections -- the band's last hurrah, reportedly -- sounds pretty good to me. Garage? Emo? Rock? Pop? Don't ask me what genre anything is. Lead singer sounds quite a bit like Julian Casablancas at times.

Two songs in, I was ready to describe this as a less-bratty FIDLAR, but now I'm thinking more like Fucked Up with non-scary vocalist.

the vocalist is still my fave thing about them, killer voice

what i've heard of that record is great, need to dive into it still

honestly it sounds to me like the last Antlers record on slightly fewer downers, though I realize that's not a tempting description to most people

also reminds me a lot of the last Pianos Become the Teeth, they have the same kind of overarching pallor and I was surprised they don't share a producer

the foxing record is gorgeous and sad. "eiffel" in particular is stunning

Loving the new Beach Slang. They played here the other night and I think did like 3 jawbreaker covers (a couple just sort of improvised drunkenly) It was a ton of fun.

I like that Beach Slang record, but I think I like James Alex's public (including a 15-minute phoner I did w/ him) attitude/persona/whatever even more. For some, it may come off as corny, but he seems genuinely humbled by the attention to me. Just seems like an awesome dude, and it helps me like the record more, tbh.

Totally comes across that way when he performs live. Glad it doesn't come across affected. Corny punks are kinda endearing IMHO

Does FIDLAR fit into this categorization? Their new one and the Beach Slang are by my fave punky things from this year.

the Wonder Years album held up p well for me, esp w/ my slightly edited playlist.

and despite my best efforts I was v bored with the TWIABPAIANLATD album. I would add that about half of the Turnover album was stellar. there was a killer EP in there.

Still can't believe that the FOB came out this year; seems years old by now. Some regional stuff - self-titleds from Carb On Carb (Flying Nun-ish indie group that've slowly transitioned into 90s emo/pop-punk; kinda Rainer Maria-ish ... half of the band is from Auckland's greatest group never to record a full-length album, Moron Says What) and Chinese Football (from 成都, v.much in a twinkle/American Football style).

I'm wrapping this playlist for the year. It has been updated with a few new adds (The Max Levine Ensemble, Title Fight, Chumped, Colleen Green) and includes every track mentioned on thread that is available via Spotify's US catalogue as of EOY 2015.
