dig this 90s-ish Popcaan track "Fix Tings". excited to see if he can keep momentum going this year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNioow7FCNY

also feel obliged to mention this pretty credible Eddie Murphy song "Oh Jah Jah"

rob, Friday, 9 January 2015 23:51 (nine years ago) link

on second listen, I'd like to upgrade "dig" to "love"

rob, Friday, 9 January 2015 23:55 (nine years ago) link

pretty sweet riddim from Digitall on this:

Both those songs are great, although i haven't been able to bring myself to listen to the Eddie Murphy track. Hopefully Popcaan does attempt to build on his increased profile this year. It's nice to see dancehall getting coverage in areas in which it is usually invisible.

Hope for 2015: Spice gets a similar level of coverage. She is the most vital dancehall artist of the moment and deserves a much wider audience. It's very pleasing to see her getting props in various end of year polls, but i really hope this overdue respect breaks out from these dancehall specific areas.

Konshens sounds great on the Brit Jam Riddim.

CeCile is brilliant over the Cute Bubble Riddim, which is the same riddim as 'Lyrics to the Song' by J Capri. It's not as vital as that version but it's still accomplished.

ha, I did not know that riddim was called Cute Bubble, very apt. Lyrics to the Song slowly grew on me and ended up being one of my favorite tracks for the year. ^that is probably the best thing I've heard from CeCile since "Back Way"

cosign on Spice. lyrically she's probably a little too extreme for crossover potential, but I would think she'd be an easy figure for non-dancehall stans to pick up on. Like A Man should have broken out even if it is pretty inside baseball.

general EOY thought for me: does anyone here fuck with Alkaline? I've liked songs of his I've heard on mixes, but whenever I listen to him in isolation I can't get into it, so I've basically stopped bothering and think I might be missing some good stuff. or is he just a third-gen Kartel copy with the boundary-pushing turned up obnoxiously high?

rob, Sunday, 11 January 2015 16:46 (nine years ago) link

"Back Way" meant "Ride"

rob, Sunday, 11 January 2015 16:48 (nine years ago) link

gregus, you didn't mention that Cute Bubble was a ladies-only riddim. these are all pretty great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sljEy-TBLM

rob, Monday, 19 January 2015 21:17 (nine years ago) link

I also do not see anything in Alkaline, his whole personality and performance seems a poor amalgamation of other more talented artists. His new track 'Ride On Me' is terrible, a extremely poor Young Thug facsimile. His popularity/notoriety seems to have been predicated, as Spice mentions in 'Like A Man', almost exclusively as a result of him apparently tattooing his own eyeballs.

'Ice Queen' by Yvbz Kartel and Toian is just destined to be a massive hit. It's also my favourite Kartel since 'Mamacita'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy3ISTGJSvk

Sevana 'Bit Too Shy'. A lilting ballad that is helping to warm these cold January days.

Forks, i love the idea of a spotify playlist, is it possible for someone other than you to add to it?

gregus, Saturday, 24 January 2015 01:08 (nine years ago) link

I don't mind monitoring it; if you wanna start your own for your own picks plus these (and that's a smart thing to do!) you can just pull from that list and modify as you want?

(but if you see something pop up on spotify post facto that isn't on the list feel free to send ilx mail to remind me?)

Sounds like a forks display name (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 24 January 2015 01:54 (nine years ago) link

nice one forks, very much appreciated (plus all the other rolling lists too)

I did not know that Toi had become Toian and was still releasing stuff, that is *very* exciting! "Ice Queen" is fantastic. I'm enjoying the annual tradition of Kartel duetting with my favorite overlooked female singers featuring the lyrics "you deserve it".

apparently Toian has a roots EP coming out next month. by the sound of "Rude Boys", it could be excellent:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flrdtKwINHQ

I don't dislike Kranium on this, but man I hope Latty J gets to put out some solo stuff this year. she took that ward 21 sleng-teng-y riddim last year but was left off the release for some reason:

speaking of Kartel, this track was on some EOY list I read and it's pretty fire, though fair warning this is a lyrics video:

This is the first thing I've heard by her, but she has become my favourite new dancehall artist on the strength of this. I love the contrast between the pop vocals of the chorus and the hardness of the verses.

This track does nothing special, but on these cold dark days, this riddim, and collection of artists, cheers me up.

^^counting down until I can post that one on the summer jams thread tbh

I'm glad this piece on Assassin not being credited on rap songs was written, and I hope he does get credited on that Kendrick track when it's more official: http://www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2015/03/12/392541701/assassin-raps-best-kept-secret.

wringing my hands over dancehall's lack of crossover success feels pretty pathetic, but it is a little frustrating thinking how good some 90s-style rap-ragga collaborations would sound right now -- feel like there's a lot of dancehall in rap's current DNA that would make it a seamless connection.

There's a ton of good stuff on this ZJ Liquid tape: https://soundcloud.com/zj-liquid/ruppinz-mixtape-dancehall-2015.

http://static.unitedreggae.com/music/disc/disc-3285-protoje-ancient-future.jpg

^ this is excellent (that's Protoje's new Ancient Future album if you've got images off).

the production is immaculate and draws from all kinds of sources: the diva-ish "Love Gone Cold" is disco-reggae; "Answer to Your Name" is big-beat-esque ska; lots of hip-hop influence all over it. I particularly liked when it draws on the harder early 80s Roots Radics proto-dancehall sound (which people were just praising on the dub/reggae for idiots thread) rather than just the usual 70s roots sources. It's a good fit for his delivery which reminds me of those early-rap influenced deejays like Welton Irie.

nice piece by Erin Macleod here: http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2015/mar/12/protoje-i-wanted-to-capture-the-history-of-jamaican-music

good call on that Destiny Sparta. have you head D'Angel's "Nah Lef"? I think you'd like it: https://soundcloud.com/djkaas/nah-lef-dangel-autoban-r

I particularly liked when it draws on the harder early 80s Roots Radics proto-dancehall sound (which people were just praising on the dub/reggae for idiots thread) rather than just the usual 70s roots sources.

Guess I will re-listen to these Protoje tracks. My first listen all the way through just gave me an its ok (but derivative feel). But yeah, since he tries it all from ska onward, I can see him getting hype from some who would not otherwise (and attention from folks like me who want someone who can do all that, but somehow want it to sound new and fresh)

curmudgeon, Monday, 30 March 2015 15:17 (nine years ago) link

I try not to overhype the 'roots revival' crew since it wasn't too long ago that I would never have even tried this stuff on principle (and I think that applies to the majority of reggae fans on ILM), but I do think this sound has gotten much sharper and in Chronixx they've found a really charismatic singer to serve as a focal point. I had low-ish expectations for Ancient Future, compared to Chronixx, so my reaction was def pleasant surprise and I can see it not clicking for others, though tbrr 'derivative' is kind of missing the point.

The Roots Radics sound connection in that post was mostly a reference to "Bubblin" so maybe start there if you're giving it another try ("Criminal" is also nice).

rob, Monday, 30 March 2015 17:18 (nine years ago) link

Thanks. Good points. I do really like Chronixx voice. I know some folks who are quite fond of the roots revival sound so am curious to see what others more into other styles think of such artists.

curmudgeon, Monday, 30 March 2015 17:27 (nine years ago) link

It's a fine line for me for sure. That forthcoming rootsy Toian EP I mentioned upthread turned out to be pretty bad

rob, Monday, 30 March 2015 17:44 (nine years ago) link

This is a quick, quarterly reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a few album selections) are being posted as updated to a thread-specific Spotify playlist that I'm maintaining. I just did a quick sweep prior to posting this message and updated as of today with everything that's been added on Spotify since it was first mentioned.... dancehall is really well represented on Spotify and well over 90% of what's been talked about on thread is up for listening.

That playlist is currently a bit more than two hours of music and is clickable below. Give it a spin and subscribe if you want to listen along through the year.

rob, Friday, 17 April 2015 12:44 (nine years ago) link

Talking of remixes, this remix of 'Dancehall' featuring Spice, Konshens and Gaza Tussan is terrific, even better than the original. The main benefit being hearing properly recorded vocals over the beat.

I was going to apologize for liveblogging this thread today, but every time I check sna I don't feel so bad about it

rob, Sunday, 19 April 2015 19:13 (nine years ago) link

never apologise the last three weeks' worth of posts in here contain straight fire. "7eleven" and "back bend" in particular >>>>>>

that ishawna single is a very funny juxtaposition, also discovered her "restraining order" from last year which is brilliant

lex pretend, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:12 (nine years ago) link

It's approaching the time of the year when I really want to cane loads of dancehall and those Spice tracks are brilliant.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:16 (nine years ago) link

also it is extremely fantastic to hear stush back

lex pretend, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:19 (nine years ago) link

yeah, I cannot believe that Stush video only has 189 views, but I don't have much of a sense of her career from over here

rob, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 12:38 (nine years ago) link

That new Stush is fantastic, particularly lyrically. I agree that it is depressing to see that song have such a pathetic number of views, but not that surprising given that the first time I was even aware that song existed was when you posted it.

'Bend Over' is equally impressive. Spice is just imperious at this point.

Unsurprisingly Ishawna releasing a gospel song comparing great sex to a transcendental religious experience has led to some criticism.

http://jamaica-star.com/thestar/20150413/news/news1.html

Which basically just gives me another reason to enjoy it.

Given the discussion regarding accreditation and tokenism about Agnet Sasco/Assassin, this new song shows drives home why it is so depressing how one of the most consistently thrilling performers in dancehall is continually used in the role of what is essentially a live sample.

I'm sure there are others, longneck?

also, I just posted this in the Soca thread and nommed it in the eoy poll, so while I'm generally spamming the board, you really need to hear this Olatunji track, Big Business:

Yeah, I'm behind on all the Kartels that have been flooding the market these past months. And once you do get behind it's easy to mistake something old for something new, etc. But I'll try to make an effort soon. Looks like this one is picking up steam right now:

R.I.P J Capri. One of the most exciting artist with the most potential to have emerged in years. Having listened to her music a lot in the last week, I think her best track is 'Lyrics To The Song'. Not quite as immediate as some of her other tunes, it's the kind of song that becomes more vital every time you hear it.

And from this year 'Likkle' is terrific

hey any of you aware of a good year end summary and/or list for dancehall? feel like I am pretty behind. there is an pirate urban radio station in Boston that plays a lot of dancehall and I am digging much of it a lot but I am pretty out of the loop otherwise

these guys have a terrible name but are good selectors imo - http://www.dummymag.com/lists/the-best-dancehall-riddims-of-2015-according-to-hipsters-dont-dance

HDD do good work, lots of great stuff on that list. I haven't seen any other lists yet. Largeup usually does one but they're pretty rare ime.

rob, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 04:48 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, that's a good list. Lots of favourites.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 07:51 (eight years ago) link

Largeup's list came out a while back:

2. Busy Signal, "Text Message"
3. Jamie XX featuring Popcaan and Young Thug, "Good Times"
4. Vershon, "Inna Real Life"
5. R City, "Locked Away"
6. Popcaan, "Rup Rup (Bad Inna Real Life)"
7. Future Fambo, "Bloodclaute Song"
8. Aidonia, "Nuh Boring Gyal"
9. Busy Signal, "What If"
10. Mavado, "Up Like 7"/"Boy Like Me"
11. Dexta Daps, "7Eleven"/"Shabba Madda Pot"
12. Kranium, "History"
13. Spice, "Needle Eye"
14. Alkaline, "Fleek"
15. Gyptian, "All On Me"

They've got a soca and a riddim list too.

vershon is performing in Boston tonight at the holiday party of one the pirate stations I mentioned so they've been playing that tune a million times a day

dancehall pirate radio station holiday party sounds like a pretty great time

kind of a weird, confused list from LU, but I suppose it accurately reflects their crossover dreams and attachment to a handful of established artists. also super male-dominated, though tbf this wasn't that stellar a year for women in dancehall

rob, Wednesday, 23 December 2015 03:07 (eight years ago) link

list seems fair enough, though perhaps more perfunctory than celebratory. "their crossover dreams and attachment to a handful of established artists" = r city, fambo, aidonia?

girls weren't up to snuff this year, don't force it. 'cheerful giver' is the only thing i'd have considered iirc and even that rather came and went

r|t|c, Wednesday, 23 December 2015 08:54 (eight years ago) link

hdd list is money for old rope really but you're unlikely to find better around these days i suppose

"It’s rare in dancehall that a clean version is better than the dirty (raw) but"

this was a bizarre statement... stone tablet of truth in years gone by but notably v much reversed in the last couple; to me it now seems like all the original songwriting goes into the cleans and the raws are the ancillary afterthought products just for slackness in the dance purposes (actually dexta on seh feh mentioned upthread is the only one that comes to mind this year where the clean was a lazy sfx sop)

r|t|c, Wednesday, 23 December 2015 09:09 (eight years ago) link

it has indeed been p magical how u can hear 'inna real life' one million billion times and it never does get old or anything less than thoroughly amenable

quite possibly the secret weapon is its beginning with [raises eyebrow] "KWETHTYON" which is always great and the best and cutest intro lisp since 'no more' by 3lw

this has been the only decent bit of dancehall writing published worldwide in 2015 and i claim my five pounds ty

dancehall pirate radio station holiday party sounds like a pretty great time

ya i would've loved to have gone but i got two little kids/worknight/etc., it was called "irie christmas", all day yesterday they were broadcasting from a jamaican restaurant until the party at some club

perfunctory is a fairer way of putting it, and since this is likely to be the only list I see, I'm not mad at it.
established artists = gyptian and mavado, though "dancehall" at number 1 feels awfully *shrugs*
crossover dreams = r city and jamie xx, and as much for what they wrote as for their inclusion. they didn't even mention OMI though so points for that.

rob, Wednesday, 23 December 2015 17:36 (eight years ago) link

absolutely would share in that eyeroll for 'dancehall' except lol i truly honestly do feel gaza tussan miraculously hits some essential leyline vein on his appearance on the remix. can hardly explain but in his total pointless never-to-be-repeated anonymity he fucking nails the titular it with an improv classic verse imo, whatever that it be

#1 should prob still be '7eleven' tho. do feel like a lot of onlookers recoiled when/if they eventually realised dexta was not so cutesy nice after all but instead a brilliant anarchic splice of jackie wilson and mavado

mavado himself was dominant on every single thing he touched this year, deserved placings and really should even have featured more. gyptian maybe more of a gripe but i can't easily let go of the sentiment for him either tbf

i liked the all-dancehall mix of 'good times' w/ assassin, konshens and kranium (gr8 album btw) even if it did take way too long to come out

r|t|c, Thursday, 24 December 2015 00:23 (eight years ago) link

rest of 'dancehall' past tussan is obv tourist tat tho yeah

r|t|c, Thursday, 24 December 2015 00:29 (eight years ago) link

Rumors is really great, wasn't expecting much of a splash but it deserves more attention for sure. and yeah the Dre Skull remix of 'good times' is nice but lol yes I didn't even know it had finally officially been released

been revisiting some Mavado tunes since your post, and "My League" is also v good. I will have to give that tussan verse another listen next

I'm wrapping this playlist for the year. It has been updated with a few new adds (Vybz, Ishawna, Samantha J, Gyptian) and includes every track mentioned on thread that is available via Spotify's US catalogue as of EOY 2015. If I missed something or if a track comes available sometime in the future, bump here to let me know and I'll add.
