umm honestly i don't really seek out the vocal tracks, but some of the most vital electronic music i've heard lately is grime-ish/grime-inspired

virtuoso thigh slapper (Jordan), Thursday, 8 January 2015 23:47 (nine years ago) link

instrumental grime that seals itself off from vocalists is one of the most bullshit trends around rn

lex pretend, Friday, 9 January 2015 00:01 (nine years ago) link

seem to recall it was hot fire in 2008 though right?

r|t|c, Friday, 9 January 2015 00:02 (nine years ago) link

lex, who's a really compelling grime vocalist right now? honestly have no idea.

virtuoso thigh slapper (Jordan), Friday, 9 January 2015 00:21 (nine years ago) link

I'm liking the weightless sound that's emerged over the last year or so. Mr Mitch's album is awesome (if that counts as grime)

paolo, Friday, 9 January 2015 09:35 (nine years ago) link

Some of this stuff is, if not exactly enjoyable then sort of architecturally interesting but really give the genre another name instead of giving the FACT-reading bores an excuse to whitewash yet another genre.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 January 2015 09:40 (nine years ago) link

reynolds sums this up nicely

"I for one do take "weightless" as a pejorative, unintended as it is is. Grime has gone from purpose-built MC tools to purposeless instrumentalizm: not what I'd call "advance". A form of music that once served as a vehicle for individual and social expression – explosive with individual hunger, freighted and feral with social demand - has been reborn as art-muzak. Superficially jagged and challengingly ugly; ultimately placid."

http://energyflashbysimonreynolds.blogspot.com.es/2014/12/bass-for-weight.html

ive always had time for butterz otoh

Trim's album is finally coming out this year btw (not on rinse as originally intended though), but even thats hard to get excited about at this point though.

Benny B, Friday, 9 January 2015 09:42 (nine years ago) link

lol, i agree with reynolds

it's also telling how much classic instrumental grime riddims have been mythologised and canonised while so many grime mcs from the same era (the ones who never got a career out of it) are mostly not talked about any more

night slugs wasn't selling itself as nu-grime back in 08-09 was it? i never really repped for bok bok's singles along those lines

a few years ago i thought this might have potential bc i really enjoyed slackk's early eps, but the entire boxed movement feels very dry to me

lex pretend, Friday, 9 January 2015 09:49 (nine years ago) link

Trim is super talented but he peaked years ago, I'm not expecting much from his album.

Oh and btw: Midz > Ldn

:D

grant holt (prettylikealaindelon), Friday, 9 January 2015 10:01 (nine years ago) link

like some butterz and boxed stuff, but that mr mitch album is just terrible and anyone heralding it as a nu dawn for grime should be ashamed

StillAdvance, Friday, 9 January 2015 12:45 (nine years ago) link

and while i hate the gentrification of grime, i did think the slackk album was really great (and not emo), despite not liking his earlier stuff at all

StillAdvance, Friday, 9 January 2015 12:46 (nine years ago) link

i mean, not to draw lazy binaries, BUT most of this nu grime stuff is grime for people that dont (or at least didnt, which maybe isnt their fault?) really like grime, no?

StillAdvance, Friday, 9 January 2015 12:47 (nine years ago) link

also, while im ranting, those mumdance and novelist collabos are pretty bloody lame, and ive liked mumdances beats in the past (at least the ones with logos)

StillAdvance, Friday, 9 January 2015 12:49 (nine years ago) link

the producers getting more attention over the mcs wasnt a bad thing when it started really, it was good to have some balance

StillAdvance, Friday, 9 January 2015 12:57 (nine years ago) link

dislike both the mumdance/novelist collabs i've heard. very try-hard

slackk album was a huge disappointment to me, i did like his early stuff and the really excellent ear for melody he had, nothing on the album stuck at all

lex pretend, Friday, 9 January 2015 13:07 (nine years ago) link

not sure how out of what/who they might have signed, that is what XL chose to go for.

i thought the slackk album was melodically brilliant actually lol. really densely packed but so well done. one of the best grime albums ever for me actually.

Just up the coast in Seattle is Korma, who with YNGN runs the new label Team Aerogel, which to date has just one, high-intensity release by the two of them, Ascension. Korma also has an EP out on Montréal's Infinite Machine label: titled ZGMF-X19A, it's full of gleaming metallophones and named after a mobile battling suit from the Gundam anime series: a union of body and technology.

Fabriclive 83 has been mixed by Logan Sama.

The KeepinItGrimy boss and long-time grime DJ has compiled a selection of 24 instrumentals featuring 66 MCs, including Novelist, D Double E, Ghetts and Flowdan. "To be invited to record a Fabriclive mix was a great honour," Sama says. "I wanted to make a real statement so I called up the producers I have been supporting over the last couple of years and asked them to create something special for me. I spent several months collecting acapella bars and went about building a sonic collage over my instrumental mix."

For the first time in Fabriclive history, the mix is being made available on vinyl. The quadruple-vinyl version of Fabriclive 83 contains all 24 instrumentals that feature on the CD and digital versions.

Sama adds: "Vinyl has always been an important part of grime history. It gave us the power to get our music out to the public without having to be tied in to the mainstream music industry. Being able to make our own music and then press it up directly onto vinyl was so pivotal to the growth of grime for many reasons. When I was a teenager growing up and getting into DJing something like this would have been exactly what I wanted, it’s great to be able to give people a package like this."

The launch party will take place at fabric on Friday, October 9th. Listen to Rapid's "3rd Eye," which features on the mix, below.

01. Wiley - Sweep The Floor + Vocals by Wiley, P Money, Jendor & Despa

the late great, Saturday, 3 October 2015 16:37 (eight years ago) link

I was open-mouthed in awe for the first half of it, convinced that we finally had a commercial grime release that came close to capturing the intensity of the best radio sets - Kano sounds revitalised in this context, D Double still reassuringly useless in anything other than full eye-popping intensity, Scrufizzer bars amazing, clearly Black Butter aren't going to ruin him entirely. But the Jammer track seemed to be hinting at a shift up a level that never quite came, the final stretch wasn't the victory lap I'd been anticipating and it sort of ran out of steam towards the end, like he'd shunted a few of the ropiest beats and bars at the back end. Still excellent on balance though.

As we move to the end of the year, I'd like to drop a quick note to encourage any readers / lurkers / ilxors to post their favorite grime tracks from this year to the thread so that I can hoover them into the ongoing spotify playlist. Last chance for any accessible stragglers that may not already be in the lexicon.

two weeks pass...

If anyone's craving a Run The Road-style round-up then this comp is pretty great, loads of stuff I hadn't heard before (although virtually every verse will be familiar to people with the Logan Fabric mix).

^^^ Also Kano over the XCXD BXMB beat is brilliant and rubbish in equal measure, right up until the point where he goes full Alan Partridge with "your girl's pum-pum stinks like the A13 Beckton exit", which is quite a location-specific diss.

Man try say he's better than me
Tell my man shut up
Mention my name in your tweets
Oi rudeboy, shut up
How can you be better than me?
Shut up
Best in the scene?
Tell my man shut up

I'm wrapping this playlist for the year. It has been updated with a few new adds (No Lay, Visionist, Preditah, Plastician) and includes every track mentioned on thread that is available via Spotify's US catalogue as of EOY 2015. If I missed something or if a track comes available sometime in the future, bump here to let me know and I'll add.
