Because of all the talk in the original thread Acclaimed Music Top 40 Songs from 1965 poll plus these songs might be a bit more interesting to poll for the year 1965.

Acclaimed Music Top 25 Albums from 1965 poll

This is probably the best year for songs ever. The Acclaimed Music 1965 song list is just insane.

Yeah, seriously. And when you pick a random Billboard singles chart from '65, it's just completely mindblowing how many utterly earthshaking records were out (and new, and on the radio) at the same time.

this is actually easier for me to pick a song then the original poll. voting The Standells "Dirty Water." thanks to the Nuggets comp.

"Dirty Water" or "Shotgun" or "King of the Road". The latter is probably the one I listen to the most.

Simply The Bessed! (Old Lunch), Friday, 19 December 2014 03:35 (nine years ago) link

"The Kids Are Alright" over "Out in the Streets" and "I Can't Help Myself."

I'd have voted for "Iko Iko" in the other one

Dej & the Fommly Loaf (The Reverend), Friday, 19 December 2014 04:25 (nine years ago) link

Wow! Not just more of my stated favorites from 65 but other greats I hadn't contended with...

Tough one. Went with I Ain't Marching Anymore

If "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends" were from this year I'd strongly consider it - one of the most unique singles ever.

As it is, it's between "See My Friends", "The Kids are Alright", "We Can Work It Out" and "Make It Easy on Yourself" for me.

I still find "See My Friend" startling. It's just this perfect blend of Ray's olde England perspective and psych overtones.

Yes, really great record. Watching them lip-synch this on Shindig, they are one of the few groups from the time who can keep from inappropriately smiling at the camera.

Has anybody ever done a thread on "precursors to the Velvet Underground sound"? Because Shangri-Las and records like Lou Christie's "Lightin' Strikes" (I'm thinking of the guitar solo more than the rest of the single), mixed with La Monte Young or something, could make for an instructive mix tape.
