Hearing "She Loves You" for the first time blew my little 7 year old mind and changed my life.

She Loves You

"Surfin' Bird". No contest.

This is the beginning of the girl group golden age, but there are soooooooooo many better songs than those represented here.

Da Doo Ron Ron is so much better than Be My Baby fyi

This is not an opinion I share. At all. There are a lot more songs that have simply been beaten to death for me on this list than on the '62 list, but I don't think I'll ever not want to hear "Be My Baby."

Off now to find out what the hell "Syracuse" by Henri Salvador is.

there are at least 20 perfect songs here (and that's a low estimate) but 'be my baby' still wins.

Heat Wave barely over Surfin' Bird

I dunno, I think the opening to Mean Streets would lose something if it was set to "Da Doo Ron Ron."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 4 December 2014 19:57 (nine years ago) link

I think the main problem with this lineup is that, as someone mentioned, many of these have been overplayed to the point where I can't even hear them on their own merits anymore. Why does '63 seem to be the year where the oldies canon starts in earnest?

Hamhole and Fly Eyes (Old Lunch), Thursday, 4 December 2014 19:57 (nine years ago) link

^^^ Beatles.

good year,

heat wave

Sally Go 'Round The Roses is by far the most haunting song here, also not overplayed like (alas) so many of these. Runner-up goes to Fingertips Parts I and II.

agincourtgirl, Friday, 5 December 2014 23:11 (nine years ago) link

Fun fact: the drummer on "Fingertips," Freddie Waits, went on to work with Bill Dixon, Andrew Hill, and Pharaoh Sanders, among others.

i love the run from "On Broadway" to "Heat Wave" have a Beatles song then the excellent "He's So Fine" and the Beatles again.

Bee OK, Saturday, 6 December 2014 02:13 (nine years ago) link

"Ring of Fire." I wore out all the Spector stuff.

clemenza, Saturday, 6 December 2014 19:06 (nine years ago) link

(Would love to have a good copy of that Life. Seems to run around $40 online.)

clemenza, Saturday, 6 December 2014 19:08 (nine years ago) link

The "Syracuse" video is astonishing, thanks Dan Peterson. Cool music too.

from this list for me, Jaynetts vs. Please Please Me.

some (only some) serious contenders not on the list:
Hello Stranger - Barbara Lewis
Our Day Will Come - Ruby & the Romantics
That's How Heartaches are Made - Baby Washington
