Music Critics, C/D?

Have they ever been more irrelevant?
Have they ever been less required?
Have they ever been as persecuted?
Have they ever been more entitled and pretentious?
Have they ever been as disliked?

Music discovery, they are no longer needed. In terms of critiquing a music they are no longer wanted. Magazines are dead, internet sites are compromised by page clicks and etc. People are able to find and assess their own music now with ease. where's the role?

Raccoon Tanuki, Sunday, 16 November 2014 19:06 (nine years ago) link

yes no one cares about music criticism anymore which is why rateyourmusic/acclaimedmusic/anthony fantano nitwits start salivating every mid-november for more lists to digest so they can update 'the canon'

dyl, Sunday, 16 November 2014 19:09 (nine years ago) link

also cf internet stans, normally busying themselves by writing "___ received generally positive reviews from [[contemporary music critics]]. At [[Metacritic]], it received a normalized score of 73, indicating 'generally favorable reviews'" into wiki pages for every album that isn't completely shat upon, writing death threats via email and twitter to music writers who dare not understand the brilliance of their faves

dyl, Sunday, 16 November 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

yeah i'm surprised there hasn't been some sort of #musicgate over ethics in music journalism yet considering how (increasingly) obsessed stans seem to be over metacritic scores. so many angry comments btl about reviewers knocking down their metacritic score a point or two.

prolego, Sunday, 16 November 2014 20:03 (nine years ago) link

there was last year around this time, it shared the traits of being led by an unmentionable ex-critic beloved of channers and of the involved "criticism" of "ethics" consisting largely of shitting on and making sexualized remarks toward young female critics whereas young male critics who wrote for the exact same outlets got remarks like "you know you're my bro, but..."

katherine, Monday, 17 November 2014 00:28 (nine years ago) link

also the "received generally positive reviews" guys aren't internet stans, they're wikipedians, totally different crowd

katherine, Monday, 17 November 2014 00:29 (nine years ago) link

not to minimize the obv real gender issues w/in music crit. Obv there are many more white male music crits at major institutions than POC or women.

I don't know a single human takes gopherguts seriously either

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

yeah i'm surprised there hasn't been some sort of #musicgate over ethics in music journalism yet

#gamergate had SJWs, #musicgate has SFJ

ILoveMeconium (President Keyes), Monday, 17 November 2014 20:44 (nine years ago) link

come to think of it I seem to remember a couple comments about "tumblr writers infiltrating music journalism" (paraphrasing heavily from memory) as well, so add that to the similarities tally

katherine, Monday, 17 November 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

Opening p/:

"Trigger warning: If you or someone you love is a fuckboy, do yourself a favor and steer clear of Run the Jewels 2. You will not like what you hear. Here’s a brief, but nearly complete list of people who are exempt, as handed down by El-P and Killer Mike on RTJ2: Malcolm X, UGK (Pimp C posthumously given the Lifetime Achievement Award), MJG, the Weathermen (both the hip-hop and militant factions), Gangsta Boo, Scarface (that's Brad Jordan, Al Pacino's is noticeably absent here), Zack De La Rocha, Biggie, 2Pac, Nas (ca. 1993 and also 2014, as this is being released on his Mass Appeal imprint). That’s really about it.

Otherwise, when El-P sneers, "You want a whore in a white dress/ I want a wife with a thong"...

Are people aspiring to this? This was one of pitchfork's records of the year. It's got this bad. So It's dead.

ian cohen is literally one of the worst, there's no denying that

give kawhi his damn eyedrops (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 18:07 (nine years ago) link

for many reasons, his reviews actually being pretty low on the power rankings of things that make him lame (& i dont often like his reviews even when i like the albums being reviewed)

music writing is as relevant as its ever been now that almost all music is easily accessible to everyone

ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 18:17 (nine years ago) link

katherine where did you see this tumblr complaint? curious.

maura, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 19:04 (nine years ago) link

that might've been a bit strong but there's some complaining about "tumblr-brained" writers on his ask.fm (and probably twitter, but I'm not going to go through a year's worth of that). enough instances that it doesn't seem like a one-off thing

katherine, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 20:45 (nine years ago) link

(obviously that sort of statement is red meat to a large chunk of the people who read him -- a fair amount of the questions are things like "How come people like Meredith Graves sit around waiting for a dooche like mark k to doing something doochey to cry about male violence in music when every single day rappers and rnb singers produce more vile content that flood 2dbz? Why do tumblr sjws keep mum when black artists spew nonsense? guilt")
