Music discovery, they are no longer needed. In terms of critiquing a music they are no longer wanted. Magazines are dead, internet sites are compromised by page clicks and etc. People are able to find and assess their own music now with ease. where's the role?

yes no one cares about music criticism anymore which is why rateyourmusic/acclaimedmusic/anthony fantano nitwits start salivating every mid-november for more lists to digest so they can update 'the canon'

also cf internet stans, normally busying themselves by writing "___ received generally positive reviews from [[contemporary music critics]]. At [[Metacritic]], it received a normalized score of 73, indicating 'generally favorable reviews'" into wiki pages for every album that isn't completely shat upon, writing death threats via email and twitter to music writers who dare not understand the brilliance of their faves

yeah i'm surprised there hasn't been some sort of #musicgate over ethics in music journalism yet considering how (increasingly) obsessed stans seem to be over metacritic scores. so many angry comments btl about reviewers knocking down their metacritic score a point or two.

there was last year around this time, it shared the traits of being led by an unmentionable ex-critic beloved of channers and of the involved "criticism" of "ethics" consisting largely of shitting on and making sexualized remarks toward young female critics whereas young male critics who wrote for the exact same outlets got remarks like "you know you're my bro, but..."

also the "received generally positive reviews" guys aren't internet stans, they're wikipedians, totally different crowd

not to minimize the obv real gender issues w/in music crit. Obv there are many more white male music crits at major institutions than POC or women.

for many reasons, his reviews actually being pretty low on the power rankings of things that make him lame (& i dont often like his reviews even when i like the albums being reviewed)

that might've been a bit strong but there's some complaining about "tumblr-brained" writers on his ask.fm (and probably twitter, but I'm not going to go through a year's worth of that). enough instances that it doesn't seem like a one-off thing

(obviously that sort of statement is red meat to a large chunk of the people who read him -- a fair amount of the questions are things like "How come people like Meredith Graves sit around waiting for a dooche like mark k to doing something doochey to cry about male violence in music when every single day rappers and rnb singers produce more vile content that flood 2dbz? Why do tumblr sjws keep mum when black artists spew nonsense? guilt")
