Five classics on my list imo. I'm stuck b/w Shanice and Mint Condition atm.

Shanice, no doubt. I think about and/or listen to that song a lot. One of the best singles of the '90s IMO.

That list is fairly evenly weighted with good stuff and tcrap. And I'm realizing that, for some reason, I thought that Atlantic Starr song was from the mid-'80s. Certainly sounds as if it is.

Genesis' last top ten btw.

Man, what prompted Phil Collins to jump directly into the dad rock toilet with such glee and abandon?

was thinking recently about how the bracketing of "i'm too sexy" with "i'm too sexy for my love, love's going to leave me" sets the whole thing up as a mea culpa for philandering

"i love your smile" is the song that made me realise i loved music

like, i'd hear it on the radio but i didn't know the means by which it got on the radio, and i definitely didn't know one could actually buy it in a shop, so i would sit by the radio with literally only one thing in mind, the hope of randomly hearing it again

"save the best for last" is so so good as well

also that little anecdote is not a fond remembrance of the radio by any means, it is an anecdote of frustration and confusion and sitting through so much bad music for this song. FUCK THE RADIO we live in a glorious age when the song we want is at our fingertips :)

"I Can't Dance" is a pustule. This is the Phil Collins people remember when they think his NJR stuff sucked

There's tension between Williams' wide-eyed everywoman delivery, wistful music, and occasionally sharp lyrics.

xpost That's very charitable of you. I can almost choke down the schmaltz enough to give "Hold On My Heart" a pass, but the rest is hot garbage.

'round these parts "Hold On My Heart" soundtracked my first summer job. It got tons of airplay, more than its chart position suggests. Then it went into recurrent play for another 183 years.

i remember "hold on my heart" being on ac radio all the time but i was young enough that my enjoyment for it is basically v v gauzy nostalgia. i don't really have positive or negative feelings about "i can't dance."

Yeah, I feel completely indefensible nostalgia for any number of demonstrably horrible songs from my yoot.

how is it possible to have anything but negative feelings about "I Can't Dance", it is literally one of the worst songs ever recorded

the way Collins pronounces "I" as AHHHHHHH is akin to hearing bombs falling on a village.

Trying to recall that Genesis song I just remember the Gram Parsons song, thank goodness. The cover of that genesis album ought to be sent to The Hague.

at first i was gonna scoff at the idea of We Can't Dance as a New Jersey just cuz he didn't make a follow-up with them, but if you combine Phil's solo albums with the pop genesis albums, yeah it works

we actually used But Seriously on the poll, as it's phil's new jersey if you keep the two discographies separate

MJ over Mint Condition and Right Said Fred. His best post-Thriller single. "I Love Your Smile" always seems to get a lot of love around here but it has one of the most primally annoying hooks I've ever heard.

yeah I mean this Phil/Genesis period defines New Jersey, right? No critical acclaim at all, just singles coasting on the past and a pre-Soundscan way of doing things.
