I call green suit "Sherman Helmsley"

Always thought he looked like Al Sharpton. And "Vote Miles" = Sly Stone

"Free Me" for sure. Curious how come his giant "SOUL" pin isn't visible on the front cover, though...

such a weird cover, but perfect in some strange way.

Lester Bangs listed this and Water Babies (along with "any Journey cover") among the worst album covers of all time in the 1981 Book of Rock Lists.

"Corky McCoy's my best friend. I just called him up and told him what to do. In fact, he was afraid to do it, and I... you know, look at those covers, man. He just lives it. Black life! It's different from white life, Chinese life, whatever. My life's different from yours."

tylerw, Friday, 12 September 2014 18:41 (nine years ago) link

lester bangs is full of shit (in this case at least). love this cover and water babies. wish miles saved the water babies art for one of his weirder albums though

McCoy also did the covers for In Concert: Live at Philharmonic Hall and Big Fun.

Now that I remember it, Bangs mentioned those also. Dunno why he hated Corky McCoy, but he definitely loved those records.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 12 September 2014 19:08 (nine years ago) link

yea i love all these covers, philharmoinc one especially. big fun might be my least favorite of mccoy's.

he did a funkadelic cover too, "Standing on the Verge of Getting It On"

marcos, Friday, 12 September 2014 19:13 (nine years ago) link

Really? I thought that was Pedro Bell.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 12 September 2014 19:23 (nine years ago) link

yeah McCoy did not do a Funkadelic cover, esp not THAT cover

Οὖτις, Friday, 12 September 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

i could be wrong, blame wikipedia

Other illustration works

McCoy created the cover art for the album Standing on the Verge of Getting It On (1974) by the band Funkadelic. He also created the cover art for the album Fresh Mode, released by a hip-hop group Ugly Duckling, in 1999.

McCoy created illustrations for comedian Tim Meadows' 2000 book The Ladies Man: Sexin' and Lovin' Leon Phelps Style, co-written with Andrew Steele and Dennis McNicholas (ISBN 9781575001876). The book was released in connection with the Tim Meadows comedy film The Ladies Man, that featured a character with the same 1970s street-funk aesthetic associated with McCoy's album covers for Davis.

haha what that is totally not right

Οὖτις, Friday, 12 September 2014 19:45 (nine years ago) link

I just wish they still made the In Concert t-shirts.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 12 September 2014 19:46 (nine years ago) link

I mean for one thing that sleeve is signed w Bell's name on it, looks like all of his other sleeves for Funkadelic, contains handwritten liner notes similar to all of his other sleeves for Funkadelic (signed as Sir Lleb of Funkadelia), and bears no resemblance to McCoy's other work.

xp

Is Yellow Shirt coded gay, it seems like he is? And Tall Woman looks like she has one of those "clothes painted on skin" outfits, not proper clothes.

I used to have a copy of the gatefold version (gave it to friend as a gift LIKE AN IDIOT), which had the extra characters inside, including the one that became the iconic Troubleman Records logo. Don't know that I'd have voted for it, just pointing out that there's even more potential candidates.
