Yes, but is the new U2 album actually any good? (Rolling)

Because despite all the hype and the marketing manouvres, the last album was a bit rub.

So, this one gets a massive new and unconventional release, and yet.. Who knows?

(this is a rolling thread for each time U2 release a new album, forever!)

To my ears on first listen at least it sounded about as good as how to dismantle an atomic bomb, which is to say unsurprising but with a couple vv good songs. My opinion might change over time but I think from U2 v.3 (post-"pop") this sounds like the most inessential (I do think "no line on the horizon" is the best of their 21st century LPs.)

the lad is larrys son.

but yes, it's supposedly a continuation of the early albums coverart.

still, all the back story aside, nah.

i have a lot of love for this band, but damn, they make it difficult.

mark e, Friday, 26 September 2014 15:42 (nine years ago) link

Why didn't they have another three letter album title then? Boy - War - Pop - Dad? (Son?)

actually i think this is a pretty good album now, there are some growers in there. it's more latter-day U2 by numbers than anything experimental ("experimental" being relative with this band obv), so it's not as interesting as the last one but now i think it's better than HTDAAB. need to listen to it a bit more, though.

there are only like three other people who like U2 on this board, right? we could form a cover band.

I used to have a Memory Man pedal so I could play like The Edge. I was learning guitar between The Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum albums, so it was a good time. Once Achtung Baby came out and there were all these guitar sounds I could not afford the technology to make, I was never the same U2 fan again.

OMG I just had a breakthrough!

Very good - Volcano, Raised By Wolves, Cedarwood Road, Sleep Like a Baby Tonight, This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now, The Troubles

Good but corny - The Miracle, Every Breaking Wave, Iris

Corny - California, Song for Someone

as with any u2 album, the songs sink in, grow, and then become part of the bands canon.

still hate the revised album art though.

The funniest part of pfork's post is how they follow up the news that this week's Tonight Show residency will be postponed with the embedded video for "With or Without You".

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 November 2014 04:00 (nine years ago) link

First the Apple thing. Then he admits he wears glasses because he has glaucoma. Then the back of his airplane falls open. Now he has a bike accident bad enough to require surgery.

Take the hint, Bono. Take it easy. The world needs you now, more than ever.

I think he should change his stage name from The Edge now, he's clearly over it.

Maybe he could do a collab with Mark E Smith.
