voting '40 oz' for the 8th grade version of me

My older brother came back home after living in NY for 3 or 4 years with a tape of "40 Oz.". My cousins from NY were mad into them too. I just didnt get it but I tried with them cos my brother has decent taste. So Ill go for that one, even though its shite. "What I Got" isnt bad I guess.

Got a bunch of friends who are into really really shitty ska punk, if I'm hanging out with them it's a bit of a relief when Sublime come on. They're really not that bad compared to some similar stuff.

I've been thinking about this a little bit since the other thread and I have to say sublime is pretty clearly a superior band to Nirvana. at least sublime is kind of listenable if you aren't an angsty 15 yr old boy

..great music, many kegs, great people, cops were cool back then. They would just tell you "just keep the noise down". There were no fights and lots of weed. I do recall we rolled a 10 sheeter and threw a whole 8th of Chocolate Tai into that one... and if I remember right, Sublime was willing to play for free beer.

I don't get all side- picky about music much anymore but this band was and is The Enemy

I actually don't even particularly hate Sublime's music I just hate what they came to represent. Plus they were popular when I was at my lowest point in life, so I always associate them with that, fairly or not.

caught myself singing "santeria" on the way to work tonight, following yesterday's discussion in the worst music writing thread. sublime are a tough call 'cuz they give me fucking hives, but it's as much a product of association as their music. skater dude scarf dog beer pong blunt hat party bro shit. thing is, there's nothing really wrong with any of that, and it’s all in my head, anyway. beyond the fact that i can't relate to what i only imagine they represent, i do get bugged by the sleazily “sensitive” misogyny of brad’s lyrics. despite all that, they knew their way around a hook. if pop's a job, they did it well.

i was like a band geek in high school and the 'cool' band kids in the low brass section liked sublime. i still think they were kinda okay, but i'm never going to listen to them willingly ever again

I'm assuming the American ilxors think they're disgusting because they've been overexposed to them. I don't know in Europe or the rest of the world but in Mexico we don't have a significant ska subculture so I don't hate them because they don't remind me of anything or anyone.

They sound inoffensive enough to my ears, I think some of the other popular American 90's ska bands that I've heard (Goldfinger, 311, Reel Big Fish, Pennywise) are way worse than them.

'What I Got' reminds me of 'Lady Madonna' so I can't hate it.

Was so disappointed when my CD didn't have Get Out! on it. Fortunately, they were still selling old copies of the tape through the Skunk website. That was probably my first e-commerce transaction.

SPIN loved Sublime. The eponymous album made their year end list in '96. I liked "What I Got" and "Santeria" the first three hundred listens.

soundtrack to highschool barbeques with the stoner/druggy crowd. not my favorite band, never once felt any inclination to listen to them on my own, but they were the background music to some fun, stupid times.

I liked the s/t album tbqf, I didn't think they were offensive per se (at the time) and there are some catchy tunes. Doin' Time is a pretty solid sinister cover version of Summertime.

*It was really eerie though that as I typed this message my brother (whose bday it is) sent me a picture message of his birthday party swag and the text was "what I got".

This thread inspired me to do some Sublime deep listening. Try to make a listenable en it off two enormous albums, etc. Unfortunately, as I checked through all my backup hard drives, I realized Is never baked them up before tossing all my CDs.

Apparently I did see fit to retain Ignore Amos by the Ziggens, Sublime's Christian party bro third - rate joke rock labelmates. They were the best thing about the non - Sublime Skunk records roster, judging by a few label comps I had back in the day. Not much to recommend to it. Songs targeting remote cobtrola, parades, and sunburns. The selling point for the album, for me, was Big Salty Tears, a song about emotional eating that I think Brad covered with a little more passion on the Firecracker Lounge bootleg. I'll have to look for that online and a/b them though. Also of note is the brief Orange County, a quick faux - country song about praying that includes the line "faith doesn't cover viscosity breakdowns/positive thinking won't make the fuel gauge rise".

Anyway, it's better than Corn Doggy Dog and the Half Pound.

8th grade me also votes 40 oz to freedom

40 oz to Freedom is dreadful. The songs with hooks suck and then the songs without hooks (which describes most of them) are painful to listen to. You have to have no concept of music or composition to think 40 oz is some kind of actual artistic statement rather than drug addled mix and match. Robbin the Hood is a glorified bootleg and isn't worth rating. At least the self-titled feels like a fully thought out album.

Haha. That'll do it. Growing up as a coastal California kid as a teenager when sublime were at their peak this and the s/t were pretty much inescapable. Everyone loved them at my high school, stoners, punks, jocks, nerds w/e. I'm not sure how good it is tbf i haven't really listened in 15+ years. Badfish is def their best.

"Badfish" seems to be the song even Sublime-haters like. My band learned it for some shows and it made me appreciate the restraint Sublime had to keep it so succinct. You can jam on that groove for a long time
