Brad Mehldau's Largo, classic or dud? And will Radiohead covers and tattoos really get people outside the jazz circle to listen to him?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 October 2002 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a pretty good album, the opening track is superb, but I think the Radiohead and Beatles covers (and "Sabbath", the distorted tribute to Ozzy) are the weaker things on it. He's over-respectful and tame, and he's no Thelonious Monk so straightforward(-ish) renditions of the tunes don't hold much interest. Probably will pull in a few punters, Radiohead fans tending towards the obsessive end of the spectrum and having been primed with the freaky free-jazz stylings of Humphrey Lyttleton.

I just finally listened to him doing Paranoid Android, and I think it's pretty fucking good actually. I mean it's rare that a jazz musician can do a cover of a rock song without overly "jazzing it up". I like the prepared piano bit, the drumming is tasty, etc. Maybe it's a bit reverent, but it's one of the only good jazz rock covers I've heard.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 31 December 2004 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to classical music summer camp with this guy.
seriously! in the mid 80's
my friend was his girlfriend.
he used to talk about smelling panties and stuff.

hahahahhahaha!!!!

oral roberts, Friday, 31 December 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah. I can really imagine that, actually. Where was your camp?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 31 December 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the camp was in new hampshire. usa.

panda man, Thursday, 6 January 2005 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

A jazzbo friend urged me to run out and pick up Largo and The Bad Plus. The latter left me cold, but I think Largo is a true keeper. "Dear Prudence" was warmed many an ear on my mix cds.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Thursday, 6 January 2005 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I can't really stomach the Bad Plus either. Actually, I'd like to add them to that artists-you-don't-want-to-hear-anymore-about thread.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I still stand by These Are the Vistas. And the most joyful live drumming I've ever seen.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

so many bad plus haters recently, usually people who have no interest in jazz, not reffering to the above, just an observation.

i love them, first time I saw them it was all about the drums, this time he held way off and it was all about the bass. people bitch about how over the top they are, too flashy or showy, im always impressed by how much they can restrain themselves.

jordan: listened to 'every day a battle', love the mix of electronic/live drums, liked the whole track actually, interesting structure, i love the buildup section to the opening bit, can only fault the production, start could be a bit more epic maybe, i take it you recorded it yourselves?

TomB (TomB), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, thanks Tom! Yeah, we recorded it in our basement studio. I'm going to post the mixed-and-mastered version soon, we added some parts and the whole thing generally sounds better and more epic, with a lot more color in the horns.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

For what it's worth: my freind the jazzbo got hot on Bad+ after seeing them live and swears there's nobody finer. And yeah, he says it's all about the drumming. My jazz heart has always beat for vocalists, and I guess Brad tends to be more melodic (at least on Largo), so that's why I think it resonated for me.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Thursday, 6 January 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

this time he held way off and it was all about the bass.

That's good to hear, the last couple times I saw them Reid Anderson was getting steamrolled in the mix (but seemed to be having fun anyway).

I love how when Dave King plays REALLY quietly, his body language/telegraphing is the same as when he's bashing.

Srsly fantastic.

Bill A, Thursday, 9 September 2010 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

Got the latest record based on that. Honestly finding most of it sort of enervating. But that track kills it.

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Thursday, 9 September 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Also it has ugh soprano sax

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Thursday, 9 September 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

I've a few of his older albums, but feel like I should check out the new stuff. That vid also reminds me how much I love live jazz, and should make more of an effort to go to shows. If nothing else, the jazzbo "game faces" are A+++.

My home town has what used to be an awesome jazz club, but a few years back it became (and remains) a total thronging hangout for dickheads and now the only chance of getting a table is by reservation, which I'm firmly against.

brad always had some especially weird jazz faces though - somewhere in between "fuck this shit" and *nodding off on heroin*

Jordan, search brad mehldau into the city

lol, always love to see a musician "gouching out".

damn, jeff ballard

Doing a little digging into Highway Rider on Spotify; "Don't Be Sad" and "Sky Turning Grey (For Elliott Smith)" are really beautiful. I like how you can hear Jon Brion's influence on the album as well.

>damn, jeff ballard

Phenomenal in that vid. One of the things I enjoy about live jazz is how drumming that might seem a bit fussy and/or technical on record can become hugely exciting when the musicianship behind it is on show (not in ref to jeff ballard, he clearly kills it all over the record too).

Brad Mehldau Trio: Live (2008) kills it. Only man on the planet who can do a jazz version of Wonderwall that doesn't sound phoned-in.

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Monday, 12 March 2012 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

I'm beginning to think I like Ballard with the group better than Rossy. Rossy is great and an incredibly original drummer, possibly more of an *artist* than Ballard, but Mehldau is already so heady that I think he benefits from the more forceful and propulsive drumming Ballard provides.

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Monday, 12 March 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

i won't be getting that big 'art of the trio' box set that recently came out, but i'd really like to read ethan iverson's liner notes/band interviews for it.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 12 March 2012 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

I like some of the Art of the Trio material a lot. I think 5 ("Progression") is probably my favorite.

Mehldau is in a weird place among jazzbos, I think -- he's a lot more *avant* than he gets credit for, probably bc of his commercial success. I mean the way he twists changes on a lot of songs is much more mind-bending than what a good number of *out* dudes do.

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Monday, 12 March 2012 17:24 (fourteen years ago)

vol IV ("back at the vanguard") was the one i listened to a lot

I wanna see him cover not Radiohead, but something unexpected--Katy Perry or Lil B or Aerosmith or ?

Every so often I go down a YouTube hole on that early 90s redman band with Mehldau, Blade and McBride. Incredible group, all in their early to mid 20s. Redman is always the weakest link for me but he gets credit for putting together/leading that band and his compositions are good vehicles for them. One of my favorite all time rhythm sections.

Incidentally, I was in Marlboro not long ago and The Falcon is a special place, a multi-tiered venue with two different live music rooms on the edge of a breathtaking waterfall. Booking is unfortunately pretty uneven (a lot of cheesy boomer blues bands).

Whole set is up. Very enjoyable, although not as much as the young, roaring-out-of-the-gate version of the same quartet.

I didn't listen to his last two serious political & Christianity-themed records more than once, but absolutely loved him on Joshua Redman's RoundAgain (w/McBride & Blade), along with the live set that's on Youtube.

That was one of my very favorite jazz records of last year, and I feel like it was underrated because the '90s crew isn't the new thing anymore (obv), but neither are they looked at as legendary elder statesmen quite yet, perhaps.
