This always seemed like an almost-parody of an abject tidal wave of a C&W everything's-gone-to-shit wallowing:

But this is the real deal right here, the most detailed drunko depresso documentation this side of Frederick Exley. Extra points for milking his divorce from Tammy Wynette for applause in the final line of this performance...

Porter Wagoner. "Could it be he loved and lost? Or could it be that he was lost and unloved? Whatever it might be, it's a pitiful sight to see."

this definitely gives George Jones a run for his money for one of the saddest country songs ever.

Dan, that Psycho song is incredible

brio, Monday, 4 August 2014 18:14 (nine years ago) link

'Psycho' is superb. As are most of these songs, but they're all marred by the curse of seeing terrible modern artists covering them in the related youtube links. NONONONONOO.

Kenny Rogers and The First Edition - Ruby. Really dark song, must have felt even more so in 1972. A pop-country cousin of Sam Stone.

brio, Monday, 4 August 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, and Elvis Costello covering "Psycho." The original is unforgettable, really sets the bar high for the incredibly bizarre murder ballad, and obviously received little to no airplay when it was released. Written by Leon Payne, and if you do some googling there are numerous (probably apocryphal) stories about how it came to be written. (xpost)

Charlie Feathers with his minimalist miserable rockabilly take on "Lonely Mound of Clay" - sounds a lot like what Springsteen went for on Nebraska.
