My hot 97. No write-ins as I do what I'm told. An all write-in ballot would have looked v. different. Also, this is a Britisher's take on CRR, i.e. I had to have heard it on the radio over here to vote for it. That said, my #1 and #2 are there because I vividly remember them on the car radio on my first trip to the States. The 60s got short shrift because... well just because. EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 1 August 2014 19:18 (nine years ago) link

Here's my top 10. Shocked at Urgent as well. 29 of 100 placed.

1 Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’. This of course corrects Vulture's listing at #3: http://www.vulture.com/2014/05/150-greatest-schlock-songs-of-all-time.html
2 .38 Special – Caught Up In You. Amazingly, a Southern Rock and Pop masterpiece simultaneously.
3 Aerosmith – Sweet Emotion. Although not about drugs, a good classic rock song should at least recall the first time you got really stoned.
4 Cheap Trick – Surrender. Occasionally Classic Rock lets the odd Power Pop song in-when said song references your collection of KISS records, you have perfection.
5 Heart – Magic Man. Of course the problem with rock in general and classic rock in particular is the lack of opportunities to vote for women. This was corrected later in the ballot by votes for Pat Benatar, Stevie, Christine McVie and Chrissie Hynde, but corrected most dramatically by my votes for 3 Heart songs (matched only by Lynard Skynard). Indeed, I voted Nothin At All #34 as a write in, placing it between Rebel, Rebel and The Waiting
6 Foreigner – Urgent. Maybe the first real surprise, this song has held up remarkably well, indeed, even improved with time.
7 Queen – You’re My Best Friend. Just another effortless-sounding beautiful tune. Works well for any breakup.
8 Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama. This is such a great protest song most people don't even realize it.
9 Kiss – Beth. The first power ballad is still the best power ballad.
10 Van Halen – Jamie’s Cryin’. Early Van Halen is rivaled only by the Ramones in it's utter affection for 60s pop.

@Sund4r -- Haha, thanks! I'm not sure what makes my conception of CR a bit off, but I suspect there's a strong dose of bleed-through from when these songs first came out rather than when they entered a nostalgia-based canon. I swear, for everything that got my vote, I specifically called up memories of having heard them on CR radio. "Junior's Farm" and "#9 Dream" got enough added juice from them being my fave solo tracks by them to get protest vote write-in status, despite some dude's attempts to keep the man down. Ditto "Amie," a song I thought was cheesy and hokey in the mid 70s but couldn't ever stop myself from singing along to from college-age onward.

I should note that I was out of commission w/o internet access during most of both the nomination and voting periods, so I didn't get to nominate any songs and rather quickly threw together a ballot, thus the sea of boldface. This ballot already feels to me like a snapshot in time from long ago, whatever songs I was feeling that day. My ballot could well be very different if I voted today, and there's lots of CR songs i love that for whatever reason i didn't vote for, but I'll stand by these....

Quicksilver Messenger Service - What About Me
Thunderclap Newman - Something in the Air
John Lennon - Woman
Van Morrison - Moondance
Rod Stewart - Reason to Believe
- (my indirect vote for Tim Hardin)

- (I only know one CR station that plays this. Shame on all the others)
Big Brother And The Holding Company – Piece Of My Heart
Crosby, Stills & Nash – Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Crosby, Stills & Nash - Wooden Ships
Derek & the Dominos - Bell Bottom Blues
Electric Light Orchestra - Mr. Blue Sky

The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset
The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever

Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody
Meat Loaf - Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad

- (contrarian vote; yeah i know that doesn't excuse it)
Allman Brothers Band - Blue Sky

Queen – Somebody To Love

This poll was the best! Thanks some dude and gr8080!

Still a little disappointed that my #1 didn't place. I figured "Cheap Sunglasses" would land somewhere between 50 and 100, but continued to think it would place for an unreasonable amount of time.

I just kept thinking, "Maybe everyone else loves it just as much as I do!" I only finally realized it wouldn't place when there were only 7 or 8 songs left.

In retrospect, I should have known as soon as La Grange placed at #50, as it's their iconic song.

Didn't make a hangout list ballot, but I would like to say that the Cisco Kid sounds all right, Mommy and Daddy are definitely all right, and from what I've gathered, Jesus is just alright, so I guess he can come too. Norman Greenbaum is in on his recommendation. The Renegade seems like he might bring the party down though, busting things up, cops on his ass - we're just trying to have a good time here, man. I'm not going to be the one who admits I'm kinda not into the Reaper coming by, but if he's bringing booze, ahh, fuck it.

Meanwhile, the Guitar Man waits at home by the phone, figuring maybe everybody has a big test to study for tonight.

damn why did i not vote for "young americans"?!? i would've voted for "fame" too but i just assumed my local classic rock station was an outlier because it's a pretty weird song!

brimstead, Saturday, 2 August 2014 03:01 (nine years ago) link

My ballot, with "did not make the top 100" in bold, and actual placement off to the right. Looking back over this now and knowing how the poll went (and what got totally passed over) this looks to me like a stranger or an alien wrote it: I packed in a lot of personal "aww, I like that song" choices in a way that might not be 100% true to my opinions on rockin' and what truly rocks hardest. Ehhh, I'm fine with that.

My biggest goofs in a strategic sense: "Feeling Alright" was apparently a big waste of my #9 spot, ditto "Fox on the Run" at #12, and most damningly, "Movin' Out" at #16. Most surprising did-not-places: "Jungle Love" and "Saturday In The Park" - thought everybody liked those! Also thought "Cat Scratch Fever" would get at least some of the muttonchop vote but maybe Nugent's intense gross awfulness as a person worked against him here.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 2 August 2014 04:12 (nine years ago) link

Totally otm with regards to Nugent. I feel like Stranglehold would have placed between 50 and 75 if Nuge had the same public profile as the dudes from Mountain or Nazareth.

Learned it from Girl Talk, actually managed to hear it twice yesterday on that syndicated show where they run down the top whatever from a given week in the past. It's cool but kinda draggy IMO.

Argent's follow-up to HYHU, "Tragedy", is brilliant. Don't know why it wasn't a hit.

You could say that was a... sad turn of events.
