this playlist is nothing like 'if there was another beatles album', how dumb. some of these have appeared on hypothetical next beatles albums i've semi-constructed in my head - 'the back seat of my car', 'photograph', 'it don't come easy', 'oh yoko'.

voted 'instant karma' over 'what is life', 'photograph'

balls, Tuesday, 22 July 2014 02:30 (nine years ago) link

Went with "Jet", but also "It Don't Come Easy", "Instant Karma", "My Sweet Lord" (although my fave George solo is "Crackerbox Palace").

jetfan, Tuesday, 22 July 2014 04:22 (nine years ago) link

voted What Is Life but could vote for almost all of these tbh

yeah trying to construct an actual 'just one more beatles album...' from 1970 or 1971 would be a fun exercise but this just reads like a list of songs. that said, most of these are really good. the actual best thing here is 'instant karma!' but i've always loved 'every night' a lot.

everybody hates on Imagine these days so voting that

Hard to choose between "What Is Life," "Instant Karma," and "Maybe I'm Amazed." Never liked "What Is Life" much until I heard it in Goodfellas, for some reason.

I think it's more fun if you go year-by-year and assemble possible extendo-Beatles albums by combining the available solo tracks per year. the first few years would each produce pretty great albums, but it falls off sharply after that. "What Is Life" is tha nuts!

"Blow away" is my favorite post-ATMP george song

"If you’ve never delved in very deep with Beatles solo albums"

yet nothing from McCartney II! How does Hawke's character not include "One of These Days?"

Only 1 song from Tug of War too.

Anyhow, I omitted The Beatles, “Real Love” because it put the poll over 50 and thought I'd keep it to just solo stuff.

Just saw the film recently, saw the track-list and thought this would be fun because so many of these songs are great. Voted Jet.

gman59, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 12:49 (nine years ago) link

Should check out more solo-Beatles, especially McCartney's solo-stuff. Voted All Things Must Pass.

Srsly hunt down the Beatles Redux comps. Dude even did EQ/compression/reverb tweaks to make each "album" sound more consistent

before you die you see the rink (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 23 July 2014 19:30 (nine years ago) link

those are p interesting but the production styles vary so wildly (and I of course would have made different track choices). Agree that the material was good enough for there to be some really amazing albums up through '73 or so.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 19:31 (nine years ago) link

Even the stuff produced by the same producer in the same year don't sound anything alike

Instant Karma in a heartbeat; better than anything on Let It Be or Abbey Road easily.

some days i blame "instant karma" for the entirety of oasis' career. other days i thank "instant karma" for the same reason.

They missed Wings "Let Em In" which could easily pass as a sonical connection between Magical Mystery Tour and the White Album.

Moka, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

I mean it sounds way more like a Beatles song than songs like 'Silly Love Songs', 'Maybe I'm Amazed' or 'Band on the Run' to name a few. McCartney is, imho, the only Beatle which had a dramatic musical shift in his solo career.

Moka, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 21:23 (nine years ago) link

Good call. A Beatles/George Martin arrangement on that would be cool.

I sometimes imagine the reverse scenario, what if the Beatles broke up in early 1968 and everything from the White Album onward was released on solo albums (and of course there wasn't much collaboration in the last couple of years). Who would would have had the best album in '68 and '69?

The only work I’ve ever been a part of that I feel any sense of pride for involves something born in a spirit of collaboration — not my idea or his or her idea, but some unforeseeable magic that happens in creativity when energies collide.
