hi plax!

horseshoe, Monday, 21 July 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link

i would vote nicks in any of the eras

horseshoe, Monday, 21 July 2014 16:54 (nine years ago) link

darn, thought thread title was buckingham nicks movie for a second.

pplains, Monday, 21 July 2014 16:56 (nine years ago) link

The correct answer depends wholly on what kind of mood I'm in.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 July 2014 16:56 (nine years ago) link

how much did nicks write in the tango in the night era??

thought she was too wasted

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:05 (nine years ago) link

if you had asked me five years ago it would've been buckingham

stevie wrote my favorite mac song ("storms") but her songs on tango suck

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:07 (nine years ago) link

this is inspired by watching the classic albums show and theres a bit where christine mcvie is p snotty about stevie nicks songwriting and i mean whatever stevie nicks songs are often p meaningless but dont be so rude christine!

plax (ico), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:09 (nine years ago) link

should have phrased this who is the worst

plax (ico), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:10 (nine years ago) link

that way you can choose TWO favourites

plax (ico), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:10 (nine years ago) link

they all seem like they would be really rude except stevie nicks maybe but i bet she is really rude as well. but then sometimes like way too polite.

plax (ico), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

Though my favorite Fleetwood Mac tune is probably Brown Eyes I still voted Buckingham.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:16 (nine years ago) link

stevie obv. gonna win this in a...ahem.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 21 July 2014 17:18 (nine years ago) link

theres a bit where christine mcvie is p snotty about stevie nicks

iirc buckingham also does this all the time, describing her songwriting as "open-ended" or unstructured or something like that. but that's why i like it, when it's good! the "gypsy" bridge is going absolutely nowhere and it's great

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:24 (nine years ago) link

def would have gone with buckingham back in the day but honestly just can't pick now

da croupier, Monday, 21 July 2014 17:26 (nine years ago) link

There was a bit in the Stevie doc from a couple years ago about how she and Lindsey almost got in a knockdown drag out fight over how one of her verses was in first person and another was in third person in the same song.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 July 2014 17:27 (nine years ago) link

lol i mean its obviously so fine to switch perspectives mid song

plax (ico), Monday, 21 July 2014 17:28 (nine years ago) link

Misleading thread titles: Would buy tickets for a band that was Buckingham, Nicks, John McVie and an excellent drummer.

sometimes wish that buckingham nicks album had been a big hit and they had never joined fm

yeah i'm not looking for that Rumors-less timeline myself

yes?

or are you telling me what order they joined the band in

plax (ico), Monday, 21 July 2014 18:02 (nine years ago) link

my favorite FM songs are "Don't Stop" and "Say You Love Me" and "You Make Loving Fun" so I am 100% serious. not trying to get into a stupid argument about my personal opinion.

guwop (crüt), Monday, 21 July 2014 18:04 (nine years ago) link

i still love stevie nicks fwiw

guwop (crüt), Monday, 21 July 2014 18:04 (nine years ago) link

i'm pretty much in agreement but they're not separated by too much in my preference

Wow, these are songs I'd never say I hate, but they are the ones I reliably skip when I know they're coming.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 July 2014 18:07 (nine years ago) link

so many of her supposedly good songs are actually terrible i cannot describe how annoying everywhere is to me

plax (ico), Monday, 21 July 2014 18:07 (nine years ago) link

I love love love Everywhere. But I like Seven Wonders even more and everybody else seems to hate that one (I know it's a Stevie song...sort of).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 July 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

some of mcvie's best cuts are from this era imo

Fleetwood Mac between Peter Green and Buckingham/Nicks

"you make loving fun" is unbelievable

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 21 July 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

over and over for example

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 21 July 2014 18:17 (nine years ago) link

imo with christine there's oddly no middle ground between the transcendent and the clunker.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 21 July 2014 18:25 (nine years ago) link

I'm listening to Behind the Mask right now (why? because I obviously hate myself). If there were more songs like "Save Me" on this album, Lindsey's departure might not have been as big a deal as it was. One of Christine's strongest post-Rumours songs.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 July 2014 18:29 (nine years ago) link

She's so good at verse-chorus-verse with little subtle harmonic curlicues that she's easy to underestimate.

Completely tangential, but one of the things that intrigues me is how every once in a while Stevie constructs her sentences in odd ways. It shows up in your Scarlett clip, Josh, around 2:16, when she says, "And we have already many times laughed and said 'where's my maid? and why are these chickens here?'".

Similarly there's an interview from the Bella Donna period where she's talking about Prince coming over to her house to collab (on Stand Back): "And he showed up, not long later."

Here it is, roundabout the 7 min mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuPCUMoDc6M

Drugs.

From whence does this grammar spill? From decades of drugs abuse it may.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 16:55 (nine years ago) link

I dunno. It's not incoherent really, just odd, almost like a poetic construction. I don't hear other long term druggies coming up with such phrasings, do you?

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Wednesday, 23 July 2014 17:04 (nine years ago) link

No, not really. But I do hear a lot of people who are smart but relatively uneducated (or self-educated) putting their sentences together in oddly ornate ways. Like Stallone does.

They'd ask me questions which I, as an actor, knew nothing about, and I was so enchanted by the sound of my own chatter that I'd spout off my opinions. One day I was doing that on the Dinah Show. And after the show was over, this innocuous-looking gentleman walked up to me. His eyes were glistening. He said one thing: 'Why are you doing this?' Then he turned and walked away.

Poetry.

i love dont stop but hear it as more desperate than, say, the clinton administration did

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 19:53 (nine years ago) link

if "don't stop" actually played any part in getting clinton elected -- after 12 years of reagan and bush -- that just makes the song that much better.

Fave moment is probably around 23:40, where Lindsey basically says my way or the highway, either release a double album or I will take all my songs and release my own album.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 21:32 (nine years ago) link

Second fave around 4:50, when Stevie arrives at the studio with a dreamcatcher.

My favorite bit is when Buckingham questions Mick and when the nine-foot-tall drummer glowers and rises to his full height you suddenly realize that Buckingham may be the genius but it's Mick Fleetwood's fucking band.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 21:43 (nine years ago) link

I like when they interview 2 of the 3 managers about the double album.

campreverb, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

man Fleetwood realizes what even in 2003 Buck doesn't: Buck can realize solo albums that sell low five figures because he's in Fleetwood fucking Mac.

My favorite bit is when Buckingham questions Mick and when the nine-foot-tall drummer glowers and rises to his full height you suddenly realize that Buckingham may be the genius but it's Mick Fleetwood's fucking band.

Tell it to Mick c. "Tango" when he was living on a steady diet of coke in a camper van parked on Lindsey's property.

xpost Eh, if that fame really ported over then Bucky would be playing to thousands of people in clubs rather than hundreds.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 21:52 (nine years ago) link

yeah but Mick's leadership has never been questioned, and it's more certain now that he's off drugs.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 21:54 (nine years ago) link

Don't Stop is great, even if you hate it. Some things are beyond good and evil.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:05 (nine years ago) link

I dunno. I think Mick abdicated his leadership position, or at least Bucky took over in something akin to a bloodless coup. While Mick is awesome, it's been Bucky since Tusk - his indulgences, his compromises, his cooperation. Bucky was the only one, besides Christine (I think), who did not have a serious substance abuse problem, and I think Mick understands the band hangs on him now. Especially ever since the "Behind the Mask" debacle.

(Is Behind the Mask a debacle? I've never heard it.)

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:12 (nine years ago) link

You can be essential without being a leader.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

I dunno if the band has a leader so much as a person shouting loudest at the moment

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

The McVie songs on BTM, the only ones I've heard, stick to her tried-and-true and don't sound particularly tacky but no special touches either. I do remember "Save Me" getting airplay.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:16 (nine years ago) link

i doubt anyone's said "guys fleetwood mac needs to do something" more than mick, the other 3 show their power by saying they DON'T need to do something.

and then there's john.

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:17 (nine years ago) link

and then there's john

...who has a ton to do with what makes them sound so great. i've always heard fm as very much mick and john's band; the name of the band is no accident. without 'em, the others would just be three very good singer-songwriters, all of whom benefited as much if not more from the rhythm section as the rhythm section benefited from them.

PORPOISE AND ME (fact checking cuz), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 22:29 (nine years ago) link

I've always thought the distance between the B/N album and the s/t/ FM record to be not so great. I love the Mick and John rhythm section, but not least because they adapted so well to Bucky's vision. And probably got even better because of it.

i doubt anyone's said "guys fleetwood mac needs to do something" more than mick

No doubt, says the only member of FM who spent a considerable time bankrupt. Either way, this was a good read: http://www.nytimes.com/1997/11/30/business/talking-money-with-mick-fleetwood-there-s-no-stopping-tomorrow.html
