"Big Decision" one of my favorite singles of the year.

also it's 27 years

I like:

3. U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
4. Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)
5. George Michael - I Want Your Sex
7. Crowded House - Something So STrong
8. T'Pau - Heart and Soul

Only one I don't remember from here is "Don't Disturb This Groove." Think I'm gonna vote "Heart and Soul."

You know something? He *did* say "well, yeah" a lot. (cryptosicko), Thursday, 17 July 2014 01:57 (nine years ago) link

from Facebook comments last night:

I've said elsewhere that the Whitney album generated her most depressing, generic singles. But c'mon Expose? The only thing wrong with it is that "Come Go With Me" and "Let Me Be the One" are even better. The System? Crowded House? And "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" is its own beast: an even better amalgam of eighties glitz and "Afro-Cuban" rhythms than "Conga."

I've a lot of patience for what Crowded House were doing in '87.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:03 (nine years ago) link

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" just over "I Want Your Sex."

Bee OK, Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:06 (nine years ago) link

First time I don't recognize any of these songs. Maybe the U2 one rings a bell.

"Alone" 4EVA

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:07 (nine years ago) link

Crowded House all the way.

I remember #2-4 but eh it was cool to spit on this stuff then

"I Want Your Sex" vs "Heart and Soul".
Why does it always have to be one or the other ?

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:33 (nine years ago) link

Whitney. I still remember the "jazz dance" routine I did set to it at the summer fest in my town that year. lol.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:44 (nine years ago) link

"Alone." Hate that particular Bob Seger song, and hate anything by Crowded House.

clemenza, Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:45 (nine years ago) link

I figured you'd be as much a sucker for "Don't Dream It's Over" as I am.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:47 (nine years ago) link

"I Want Your Sex" sounded so goofy to six-year-old me at the time because it tried so hard to sound controversial. "Sex! Unnngh! Sex! Ow!" Terrible song.

This is U2 by a country mile.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 17 July 2014 03:03 (nine years ago) link

(xpost) No--disliked them right from the start.

4. Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)

truly one of the best songs ever ever ever

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 17 July 2014 04:00 (nine years ago) link

Never liked that song. It always sounded like a weak "How Will I Know" rewrite to me.

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Polling For

LimbsKing, Thursday, 17 July 2014 04:07 (nine years ago) link

wish i had my gig list from that week to tell you if I was going to see Nice Strong Arm or That Petrol Emotion

ha. i saw the replacements that week (7/25/87, the stone pony, asbury park).

back then, i probably would've voted either expose or u2. and it's still either one of those two today.

Weak? Cut from the same cloth, sure, but a really strong piece of pop on its own.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 July 2014 04:19 (nine years ago) link

i like bob seger a lot, but i had to google "shakedown." i have no memory of that song at all. listening to it now, i can see why.

whitney by a country mile

This is U2 by a country mile

I don't understand this geography. Exposé is the winner here (though a 2 1/2 year old-song with a re-recorded lead vocal)

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 17 July 2014 06:05 (nine years ago) link

love "Alone" far more than the rest of these

Daphnis Celesta, Thursday, 17 July 2014 06:06 (nine years ago) link

I like Seger, but he's guilty of the only real stinker in this list.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 July 2014 06:07 (nine years ago) link

The reclamation of "I Wanna Dance..." mystifies me. It's at best OK -- the remix of "Love Will Save the Day" is the only jam from this period in Whitney's career.

it's not really a reclamation. it was the biggest of her #1s pre-"I Will Always Love You," has always been her most widely covered song, most likely to show up on lists of best 80s songs, etc. ILM is one of the only places i've seen where anyone even tries to put it down.

some dude, Thursday, 17 July 2014 11:35 (nine years ago) link

has always been her most widely covered song, most likely to show up on lists of best 80s songs - these two are measurably not true (by the numbers 'greatest love of all' and 'how will i know', and it's not close), at the time whitney got lukewarm reviews at best even from critics (understandably imo - the album is by and large houston cutting ties w/ r&b and ny dance roots and going straight for the ac pop that had performed best from the first album)(the one exception from the singles - jellybean's 'love will save the day' - performed worst so credit to her i guess for reading the market right). 'i wanna dance with somebody' is ok but as merrill-rubicam jams go it's decidedly second tier.

I only ever owned the 7" of one of these so I'm voting for that. I loved The System though.

If by most covered you mean David Byrne in the nineties and Lumidee in 2006 or 2006. Are there other covers besides memorials?

This about a month and a half after I graduated from high school. Voting for Crowded House.

Descending order:

Expose
The System
Gloria-MSM
Crowded House
George Michael
T'Pau

I don't rate the rest.

I was gonna say, the chorus feels so forced. I guess the verses are alright.

The Canadian mall-punk band These Kids Wear Crowns had some airplay up here with a cover a few years before her death. I won't punish anyone here by linking it.

Johnny Fever OTM.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 18 July 2014 20:18 (nine years ago) link

a nice reminder of how long chart pop has been absolutely unlistenable

Οὖτις, Friday, 18 July 2014 20:20 (nine years ago) link

least offensive is probably I dunno the Gloria Estefan song I guess. the rest of these can go die in a fire

Οὖτις, Friday, 18 July 2014 20:20 (nine years ago) link

you think "Point of No Return" is offensive?

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 18 July 2014 20:24 (nine years ago) link

listening now, I may actually not have heard that since 1985, and... ugh this vocal style, the thin, sorta nasally keening blech. there was tons of this in the 80s, Suzie Q etc.

Οὖτις, Friday, 18 July 2014 20:31 (nine years ago) link

were you a nun in the eighties?

I like most of those songs, but "Heart and Soul" and "Don't Disturb This Groove" are epic '80s singles. It might be T'Pau by a nose.

Soggy Spongy Moist & Messy (Old Lunch), Friday, 18 July 2014 21:04 (nine years ago) link

abhor, loathe, detest that u2 song

in 1985 I think I was really into the Beatles. I liked U2 at the time but I grew out of that p quickly.
