Adore this

Tim F, Sunday, 8 May 2016 22:43 (eight years ago) link

the way the synths go off like laser beams in the middle eight is definitely a ~moment~

art baengels (monotony), Monday, 9 May 2016 04:10 (eight years ago) link

it sounds like it was produced by michael mayer

Tim F, Monday, 9 May 2016 04:38 (eight years ago) link

ha it really does! and yeah whoa i was not expecting anything this good from this campaign. i was actually intending to avoid this (i have grown to really hate "dangerous woman", what a clunky song)

So the new album is pretty great, better than My Everything, has more of an influence from the first album

I'm listening to the Japanese version of the album and "Focus" is tacked onto the end and it's sounding a lot better than I remembered to the point that I'm wondering if they changed it for this but I'm not about to watch the video or anything to find out

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 19 May 2016 23:11 (eight years ago) link

it's really really good isn't it! i'm kinda shocked, none of the singles grabbed me until "into you" but the album even makes them sound better. feels like the songs are actually tailored for her (surprisingly unversatile) voice this time - unlike the awkward last album this one does a great job of taking the stuff she did so well on the debut and putting it into more varied contexts.

"greedy" really leapt out at first listen, the bonus tracks are all great too.

Loving this.

Yesterday I went to a cool bbq and dj'd with friends and discovered a new band I like and met a promising gf candidate and yet by far the highlight of my day was that change dot org petition about whiney's ariana grande review lmao

can't think of a recent pop album with better bonus tracks than this one - maybe 1989?

Haven't been struck by her stuff before but "Into You" and "Touch It" and "Thinking Bout You" are so good!

idk almost all of the recent pop records i've heard have had bonus tracks orders better than what made the official tracklisting; what makes the ariana bonuses remarkable is that i don't really hate any part of the normal record, and then the cluster of tracks at the end elevate the whole thing considerably, especially "bad decisions" and "touch it"

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Sunday, 22 May 2016 17:11 (eight years ago) link

really psyched to hear a pop record this year that doesn't suffer from overcalculation

WRIST ICICLE RIDE DICK BICYCLE!!!

r|t|c, Sunday, 22 May 2016 20:13 (eight years ago) link

are people really not here 4 the title track

the guitar tones <3 the heady rush of the pre-chorus <3 the "i wanna savour / save it for later / the taste, the flavour / 'cause i'm a taker / 'cause i'm a giver / it's only nature / i live for dangeeeeer" section <3

my other faves are "thinking bout you" (so intimate & light & warm, mdma vibes 2 me, tryna forget that dr. luke blates ghostproduced it), "everyday" (fucking banger - HEEEE GIVIN ME THA GOOD SHIT; the bananas whistling in final chorus is woah), "into you" (obv), "bad decisions" ("piano"-esque bounce to this), "touch it" (colossal & cinematic & other words), "i don't care" (mmmm). & all the other 1s

uberweiss, Sunday, 22 May 2016 21:06 (eight years ago) link

the problem with the review was apparent before any of the change.org petitioners actually read it -- its score is "too low" and, more importantly, included on metacritic

dyl, Sunday, 22 May 2016 21:51 (eight years ago) link

have not heard this album yet but excited to do so!

dyl, Sunday, 22 May 2016 21:52 (eight years ago) link

This album was reminding me in a good way of Mya's Moodring, and I think the combined sense of largesse and range but lack of over-calculation is a big part of it.

Tim F, Sunday, 22 May 2016 22:05 (eight years ago) link

it's super-calculated though, from the styles it encompasses to the guests - it's not a curveball album and it's def tailor-made to today's commercial landscape. it basically has the same aims as the second album, it just executes them so much better (and so much more fitting to her actual voice).

cher guevara (lex pretend), Monday, 23 May 2016 11:50 (seven years ago) link

well right I'm not saying it's not precisely calibrated, it just doesn't feel like it's trying to be too many things at once, or trying to be one thing so hard that it becomes lifeless

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 23 May 2016 12:09 (seven years ago) link

sure yeah i agree w that, but it's nice and rarer than it should be to hear a pop album that has so obviously been through the major label process, the focus grouping and positioning and so on, and actually works because of it

cher guevara (lex pretend), Monday, 23 May 2016 12:55 (seven years ago) link

holy shit thinking bout you is great, knew better/forever boy as well. thinking bout you is like what i wish the last carly rae album could have done but never quite did for me

kruezer2, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 01:42 (seven years ago) link

yeah i guess when i say "not over-calculated" I mean "not hamfistedly calculated".

Like, back in the early-to-mid 00s there were a lot more R&B albums that just worked because, even if they were assembled by committee, that committee had a decent working understanding of current R&B trends in the first place, so it wasn't all these super-obvious duplo-block-sized "and for our next trick let's get The Weeknd to sound morose, and for our next next trick let's get Zedd or one of those guys" box-ticking exercises you can spot from a mile off.

So apart from Moodring the other album I'm reminded of is Christina Milian's second album.

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 02:55 (seven years ago) link

yeah, also britney's in the zone, but what these albums also have in common is that their stylistic range doesn't overwhelm the artist but is in service to their particular strengths - the variety on offer seems to flow from what the singer can do rather than being disparate trends imposed on her. i feel like it's about time and in the zone also benefited from a wider range of sounds and songwriters in the pop mainstream circa 2004 as well - "i can be that woman" and "brave new girl" were highlights of each, perhaps the most eccentric moments, but nothing really to do with trying to get radio play (and indeed neither were ever singles).

they have really cut down on ariana's video budget for this campaign though if a better album is the trade-off i'm not complaining.

super-obvious duplo-block-sized "and for our next trick let's get The Weeknd to sound morose, and for our next next trick let's get Zedd or one of those guys" box-ticking exercises you can spot from a mile off

this read of ariana's last album!

cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 06:19 (seven years ago) link

(also the pre-release singles off this apart from "into you" are even more baffling in hindsight. you gave the world "let me love you" and "be alright", which are both fine, but not "greedy" or "touch it"?)

cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 06:20 (seven years ago) link

omg yes totally in the zone

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 07:23 (seven years ago) link

I love this album, but in a way I want to see more from her. She's a great actress, funny, amazing voice, and scandal-free as long as she stays away from donuts, etc. I wouldn't mind seeing her become a more-major cultural force, as opposed to just a maker of great pop albums. She might be too smart to go that route, though.

Into You is flat-out fantastic.
