I mean, I'm trying to find the exception to the rule that songs with "OING" in them are sorta hard to hate

I just hope Oingo Boingo does not count in this rule

I can't find the words to explain how my feelings about the following dovetail with what Dan was saying above, but umm it seems like a lot of appreciation of Kelly (especially outside the pop world) is based on his being slightly ridiculous or far-out or functioning almost as a boneheaded parody of himself (e.g. I think sometimes he's an r&b favorite of people who find r&b silly because he's such a caricature of precisely the silliest stuff) -- this gets in the way of my liking some of his stuff, though for some reason I don't mind his inspirational for-the-kids tunes, I seem to remember "Thoia Thoing" being low on R-Kelly-ism and high on a good beat and oingy noises, and part of why I'm cool with "Ignition" is that it seemed like this moment where he successfully implicated the entire world in his song instead of seeming ridiculous -- you know, like most people want to drink and have fun on weekends, so he seems pretty OTM and reasonable on that one.

nabisco, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess I shouldn't focus on ridiculousness cuz that's not a bad thing, but his particular ridiculousness is, as mentioned, pretty buffoonish and dumb sometimes

nabisco, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:58 (fourteen years ago) link

nabisco per usual

(except about "Thoia Thoing", which drives me up the wall)

Yeah -- at his core I consider R. to be a brilliant and prolific at his craft, while also crude and not terribly booksmart in ways that come across in his music and public persona. That's not at all an uncommon combination of traits in popular music, but obviously race and some other factors unique to R. Kelly make who appreciates his music and why a really loaded topic.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:06 (fourteen years ago) link

^^sort of the flip side of what you said above, some dude, about your own likes/dislikes having more to do with sonic characteristics. With a lot of popular music, rap in particular, there seems to be more of a judgement based at least partly on what a track represents, rather than purely how it sounds. I think there is something very gracious and universal about "ignition (remix)" that make it a great track, especially if you ignore all of the stuff surrounding his real-life persona.

Dan S, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I think "Ignition (Remix)" is massively charming in part because of its sense of levity; I can see why this very thing might annoy people who think "omg best song ever" affairs should be more of an unmistakable big event. Of course R Kelly does intensity too but it's mostly kinda scary when he does.

Tim F, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:25 (fourteen years ago) link

well just to be clear, I'm not saying I'm put off him because I think other people are liking him the wrong way, or something -- it's just that if you generally prefer your music not-too-cartoonish, and want your r&b to be sharp, and aren't super-inclined to marvel or gawk or be charmed by the (admittedly compelling) ridiculousness of him, it's just gonna seem a little dumb no matter what other people think. some of that stuff requires shrugging and giving in to the goofiness and dumbness. which can be fine. (not "ignition," though, I don't think.)

nabisco, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah. But he really has a lot of songs that have a minimum of funny grammar or crazy sex metaphors and are just good R&B.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, I didn't want to get too Lex-y on any of these threads about the PF list, but really it does annoy me greatly that R. Kelly has one token entry on this list when people like Jay-Z or the Neptunes, who I think he was either on par with or very close to in terms of making great radio hits this decade, got more like 10 entries.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:32 (fourteen years ago) link

IT JUST OCCURRED TO ME THAT THERE IS NO NELLY IN THEIR LIST

FUCK THAT

ok that was hysterical (Nelly'd be on mine though so don't yell at me)

some dude, Saturday, 29 August 2009 00:50 (fourteen years ago) link

either too far down the "caveman sexuality" line ("Bump & Grind", "Your Body's Callin'", "You Remind Me of Something") or too sacchrinely aspirational ("I Believe I Can Fly", "City of Gotham", "World's Greatest") for me to connect

Odd, too, considering that, as I pointed out in the main thread, "Hot in Herre" was like their #29 of the decade's first half.

jaymc, Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:12 (fourteen years ago) link

fuck i hate to have to agree with masonic boom but yeah all of these songs are shite

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:29 (fourteen years ago) link

every one of em, eh?

tay zondven (k3vin k.), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:29 (fourteen years ago) link

sorry i was joking they are all amazing

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:32 (fourteen years ago) link

they are all the same song pretty much, so if u hate/love one ditto for the rest

tay zondven (k3vin k.), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:33 (fourteen years ago) link

^^absolutely true, something i find pretty problematic and annoying, but this applies more to trapped in the closet than "ignition"

"ride wit me" and "country grammar" >>>>>>> "hot in herre"

lex pretend, Saturday, 29 August 2009 09:18 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah "country grammar" is pretty easily the best song of nelly's career imo, and belongs in any top whatever list of anything

tay zondven (k3vin k.), Saturday, 29 August 2009 12:12 (fourteen years ago) link

"hot in herre" > "e.i." > "country grammar" > "ride wit me" = "batter up" > any top whatever list of anything.

Tim F, Saturday, 29 August 2009 12:55 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm weird i guess but i put "dilemma" over most of those too, though i like most of nelly's early shit

tay zondven (k3vin k.), Saturday, 29 August 2009 12:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I leave ILM for a week and the challops brigade descend on Ignition? Too far ILM, it's like you're clowning yourselves to prove that nobody is safe from your contrarianism. This song is kindof above criticism fyi.
