xpost The Ma$e argument has me completely cracking up. I never thought I'd see someone defend him.

And "Crossroads" a low point? Nah, man.

Candicissima (candicissima), Saturday, 23 July 2005 19:43 (eighteen years ago) link

i love ma$e but that argument is possibly the dumbest anybody ever made on ilm

Muse Sick in Hour Mess-Age by Public Enemy=Low point. This group showed a complete lack of balls with this album.
Chuck does a "wiggity-wiggity" a la Das Efx somewhere in there.

I think the track I have the biggest problem with is going to be "Whoomp There It Is". I mean, what the fuck? There what is?

and i'd still take that over the post-apocalyptic wasteland teeming with mutants and halfwits we have now.

This is actually quite an accurate analogy.

I just love seeing 2's pre-gnomic style, with the punctuation, and the capitalization, and the admitting he knows about the world & other styles and whatnot

I've lurked on this site for nearly four years, mainly because it was energizing, entertaining, funny and a great learning experience. ("why do all these British dudes like Britney Spears so much?" was the question that haunted me.) It wasn't until recently that I had the courage to post here...but now all the Old People just rag on "nu ILM" rather than make it great like it "used to be."

Get one D&D.

p.j. (Henry), Saturday, 23 July 2005 20:10 (eighteen years ago) link

ok, dude who's lurked on this site for 4 years!

2 there is a happy medium between "writing like assholes on ilx" and totally declining/refusing to engage your God-given talent for writing clear, insightful criticism y'know

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 23 July 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean if I had your gift for a phrase I'd've turned that shit into cold hard cash, like, years ago

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 23 July 2005 20:35 (eighteen years ago) link

also, p.j., if you've been lurking that long, then you know that people have been bitching about the old days since somewhere in the middle of week two

Lowest point of hip hop? Anything that "2 Pac", "Puff Daddy" (I like to call him Poof Daddy) or "Jay Z" ever did. All that bling bling crap is just gay. And why do they have these stupid names anyway? They should stick to robbing people in the "ghetto", at least then the only time you'd see them on TV would be World's Dumbest Criminals and that got cancelled seasons ago.

Because I was shy, and because I mistakenly believed that the internet was no place for real writing, or the style of writing I thought I was proficient at. And I think I said something about John Oates that was, ahem, misconstrued. I DO NOT LOVE JOHN OATES THAT WAY!

ok there is this "hip hop" commercial in mass. for the "baby safe haven" law about dropping yr. unwanted baby off at firestations or whatever. the amount of bad thinking that went into this is tremendous. it has all the many ppl chanting out-of-time hallmarks of a car dealership "gimmick" ad and the obv. "we'll appeal to the minority youth demographic because them black kids are shooting out the babies" angle. on the other hand, the "baby! safe haven!" that it concludes with to the tune of "apache! jump on it!" gets stuck in my head all the time.

If you have a baby and don't know what to do,
Baby Safe Haven can help you choose.
When the baby is born and you're feeling all alone,
and the mother's confused because she can't provide a home.
"Although I can or can't be there, another option is adoption."
"But where can I go for help?"
Bring the baby to the cops or hospital,
it's possible.
No strings attached.
No questions asked.
If you have a baby and don't know what to do,
Baby Safe Haven can help you choose.
Baby...Safe Haven!
Baby...Safe Haven!
Baby...Safe Haven!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:46 (eighteen years ago) link

This is like something bullworth came up with.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:47 (eighteen years ago) link

whoa!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I thought the Manhattan Clothing commercial with Manny Ramirez on a boat was the death of culture as I knew it...and then I saw the Baby Safe Haven spot.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:50 (eighteen years ago) link

This is like something bullworth came up with.

goddamn there's another hip-hop low point for ya.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 24 July 2005 04:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Pras's new single, which samples "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," fits nicely with the concept as well. Local station plays it a lot and I can't figure why the fuck that is.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 24 July 2005 04:53 (eighteen years ago) link

and no one thought to mention Ca$h Money or No Limit records? I mean "'bout it, 'bout it", "bling, bling"....some of the most cringe worthy stuff on commercial radio in the past ten years. Each label had it's exceptions, but mostly the songs they put out were vomitrocious.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Sunday, 24 July 2005 05:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, most of the songs they put out were fucking great.

Miccio, I don't know if I agree about Bullworth being a low point...! Expound.

deej.., Sunday, 24 July 2005 05:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I love Bulworth, though then ending was kinda trite... "Be a spirit, not a ghost!" D'uh...

Reading all those 2001 posts is kinda amazing... The lowest point of rap was Digital Underground?? Tupac and Biggie??! Gangsta rap (not just some specific gangsta rapper, but the whole genre)???!! Jay-Z (okay, I'm not a big fan of his, but still...)??! Motherfuckin' "Crossroads", one of the best rap singles ever???!! Is this what ILM was like in 2001? The only thing I agree with those guys is that Missy is not really a good rapper.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 24 July 2005 07:08 (eighteen years ago) link

For me, the low point of hip hop for the recent years must've been Black Eyed Peas, Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5, and maybe even The Roots, though they at least have some good singles under their belt (they should stick to do doing something else than rap, 'cause that's not exactly their forté). I might've otherwise agreed with Miccio about El-P, but his production on the Cannibal Ox album really kicks ass, and luckily he has the good sense to rap on only one of the songs on that record.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 24 July 2005 07:21 (eighteen years ago) link

GLORY DAYS MY ASS

funny, I was thinking exactly the opposite (Matos/Miccio complete disagreement shocker yes I know)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 24 July 2005 11:00 (eighteen years ago) link

what a thread, what a thread...
Lord knows Micc will take issue, but I always found the Puffy "Missing You" track, especially at the awards with Sting, to be a special low point.
