I seem to have posted as early as March 01, although I was lurking for a few months before then. It looks like there was at least one other toby around then, though, who posted more than me.

toby, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 17:44 (fourteen years ago) link

well, friends, more than three years on this board. i am older, wiser, gayer, and infinitely more obsessed with music. thanks for ruining and making my life at the same time.!!

I have less hair, more gut, and more debt since I have been here. Thanks, ILX!

Whoa! If I feel old after having posted here for 7,5 years, I wonder how the people who were here from the beginning feel? Are there even many of those left? All I can think of is Dan, Ned, and Kate.

Tuomas, Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Looking at threads from ILX's first month, I see Sundar, Tim F., Nicole, Michael Jones, Mark R., Alba.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I showed up in 2002, became Johnny Fever in 2003, and I apologize for all the rest. Happy Birthday ILX!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Appropriate that Alba was there at the dawn of ILX and that Sundar was there for that beautiful event.

The person who first dragged me onto ILX (Elvis Telecom) is still posting. I kind of hate him for ruining my life.

(ha ha, not really.)

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I don't see how anyone can hate Elvis Telecom.

Nine for me. It was only recently that I started feeling like an old regular.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 26 August 2010 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I still feel like a n00b after eight years.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 August 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

I had a quick look earlier and couldn't find any birthday threads. Now I see there are two. This is obviously what stopping posting regularly has done to me (i.e. made me into some kind of blind-ass dick).

Anyway. Was it 2004 I started posting here? It must have been. I'm genuinely not sure how I ever found the time, but I still keep saying I'll make an inglorious and unnoticed return one day.

Happy birthday, ILX. Felicitations, ILXors.

That quiz, I know one, have a reasonable guess at two, the rest I have no idea.

Mark G, Friday, 27 August 2010 09:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Morning all.

Over the last year I’ve been content to be a very occasional lurker and even more occasional poster. The preceding eight years certainly had their ups and downs, and yes, if I had them over again I wouldn’t have said maybe 98% of what I did say here, but then I think about where I might have ended up if not for the roads, actual and otherwise, which ILX opened up for me. I spent most of my time here as a grieving widower and/or confused, furiously self-projecting fuck-up but all I can do is thank everyone who did stand by me and/or stand up for me when things were at their worst. These days I twitter, comment on Popular and blog on Then Play Long and that’s enough for me. Just over nine years since I thought life was over for good, I find myself back in the life I used to have before I came to ILX, before ILX even existed, with the benefit of not-making-these-mistakes-again wisdom, and that’s fine by me. But without ILX I doubt I’d ever have found my way back home.

All good wishes to everyone on ILX, even (especially!) if they can’t stand me, and enjoy the next ten years, as I’m sure I will.

Hey Marcello :)

And happy 10 years y'all! Wow, I can't believe even I've been here seven and a half years now and I felt like I was a latecomer to the borads. It's been a great ride - I've come and gone from other forums, but this place has always stuck with me like a big, bad felafel.

Huzzah!

Wow, my first post was on the 11 March 2001. I don't just feel old, I'm trying to justify what I've been doing with my life these last 9 and a half years.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 27 August 2010 10:52 (thirteen years ago) link

happy birfday ilx
wow, tho dont post that often nowadays just checked and abt 8 years since first post, where did the time go?

H in Addis, Friday, 27 August 2010 16:02 (thirteen years ago) link

About 'justifying' time spent here and all (and don't worry dog latin, I'm not singling you out or anything!):

In a segment of the interview series I did with Scott Woods the other month I predicted there would be some 'argh where did the time go' handwringing of sorts -- not the most radical of predictions and I'm sure a number of posts like that are functioning more in a sense of 'wow time did fly' or light humor rather than deep angst or anything like that.

I'd simply suggest this -- ILX functions as a constantly archived mass conversation, but at base is just that, a conversation. It is no more something to justify than the conversations we all have with others who inspire, amuse, engage or even annoy us in any number of contexts. For some it's a necessary outlet when no other one seems available, for others it's just part of how we communicate with others in general, there's no one answer.

And as such, these conversations are part of how we learn and reflect and act, continually. The archiving may be new in terms of human history, the many distances crossed similarly, but it is simply a continuing of that which has been a hallmark of language and humanity in general. It's only something to justify, or a waste of time, if you think it needs to be.

There are plenty of things I've regretted saying or writing or thinking over all my years on this planet, there's plenty of things I'm proud of. There are arguments and discussions I wish I hadn't been caught up in, there were others I was thrilled by and wished wouldn't end. ILX is just a subset of that -- and on balance, it's a damned good one, a resource, a comfort zone, a chance to connect, more besides. People stay in conversations and discussions, people leave them, people leave and return and leave...that's no different from the rest of life. Neither are the sometimes wonderfully ridiculous in-jokes.

I think that's all the justification anyone needs, really.
