i think "anomalous" might be the word i use: it doesn't feel as though it's representative of either that period of music, or of missy herself.
or maybe: i don't go back to it half as much as i thought i would.

Is Crazy the only song on this list with strings on it? The lack of strings in the complete 500 seems pervasive.
Also, you know, go fuck yourself, to those unfamiliar with the majority of these songs. Curious minds, etc.
― Popture, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:49 (fourteen years ago) link
listening to that Ignition song right now, it's sweet. is this actually on a R Kelly album? or just a mixtape thing that sort of accidently became a big thing.

this looks way better than the English, must change my settings.
I like almost all of these songs (not fussed re: The Rat, House of Jealous Lovers, and Blind) but I'm going to go for Heartbeats.

"Ignition (Remix)" without a doubt. However, if "Ghetto Musick" had been on here it would be tough. The only thing Outkast did that built on "B.O.B.", IMO.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link
the only ones i'd ever really want to hear again are the Annie and R.Kelly ones.
voted ignition (remix)
― cherry blossom, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:18 (fourteen years ago) link
voting for "B.O.B." since out of the pop picks, it's the only one that'd be highest on my list from that artist. out of the alt/indie stuff, "Idiotheque" is OK, I guess? I'm not the biggest Radiohead fan but it feels to me like their fans should be able to point out a song other than that as their best of the decade.

OK, whats your favorite song of the decade. You get one choice.
I mean, my "song of the decade" would probably be, like, Britney Spears' Toxic or some monumental Sugababes or Girls Aloud track. (though I'd have to spend hours deciding which one was the best.)
I honestly don't know. I suspect i'm too old for this kind of poll - I blinked and the 00s were over before I'd properly realised they were even halfway through.

― lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:02 (fourteen years ago) link
I voted "Maps," and I think it really should've been the PFM single of the decade, even if it wouldn't necessarily be my song of the decade. But I think maybe in a pinch, it could do the job.
― Mordy, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:03 (fourteen years ago) link
pretty much all the acceptable acts in that top 20 made at least 10 better songs this decade. '99 problems' over anything off the blueprint is the most fucked up choice i guess.

'99 problems' over anything off the blueprint is the most fucked up choice i guess.
It may not be a better song that many of The Blueprint's tracks hin a purist, hip hop sense... but it certainly is the most iconic song of his '00s career. I don't have a problem with its placement.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Also, you know, go fuck yourself, to those unfamiliar with the majority of these songs.
Have only heard two of these ("Tunnels" and "Hey Ya"), so I'm off to go fuck myself.
To be fear, these two songs are both superb so maybe I should be taking Pitchfork more seriously.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link
i know why 99 Problems is more popular with a lot of people, and it's got little to do with Jay-Z himself...so if 'most iconic' is just as a direct consequence of that then yeah i guess
― unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:27 (fourteen years ago) link
No? What is?
― jaymc, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:28 (fourteen years ago) link

ROCK N' ROLL
out of genuine curiosity how on earth is it that the only two songs someone knows from the list would be the Arcade Fire and OutKast?
― unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:29 (fourteen years ago) link
i dunno, one of the other ones. i was saying on another thread recently that "Izzo" hasn't aged well and isn't even one of his more popular old hits anymore, going on iTunes sales and recurrent radio spins, but i'd still say it's more 'iconic' (slippery as that term is) than "99 Problems."
― some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:31 (fourteen years ago) link
also definitely "Big Pimpin'" and possibly "Dirt Off Your Shoulders"

Odd, too, considering that, as I pointed out in the main thread, "Hot in Herre" was like their #29 of the decade's first half.

it seems like a lot of appreciation of Kelly (especially outside the pop world) is based on his being slightly ridiculous or far-out or functioning almost as a boneheaded parody of himself (e.g. I think sometimes he's an r&b favorite of people who find r&b silly because he's such a caricature of precisely the silliest stuff)
^^absolutely true, something i find pretty problematic and annoying, but this applies more to trapped in the closet than "ignition"
"ride wit me" and "country grammar" >>>>>>> "hot in herre"
