i think "anomalous" might be the word i use: it doesn't feel as though it's representative of either that period of music, or of missy herself.

or maybe: i don't go back to it half as much as i thought i would.

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:06 (fourteen years ago) link

it is probably the best song on this list (tho), sigh.

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:07 (fourteen years ago) link

it's representative of the Indian vibe trend in rap around that time

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 12:12 (fourteen years ago) link

oh obvs i don't like anco either, so i like 15 of 20.

Voted All My Friends, not objectively but because of my age and it's relevancy to the 2000s as I experienced them.

Animal Collective - My Girls
*can't remember, is it on the new one?
Annie - Heartbeat
*sorta catchy and sweet
The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
*OK
Beyoncé ft. Jay-Z - Crazy in Love
*is a nice loop, but a boring song.
Daft Punk - One More Time
*could say the same about this, but liking it anyway
M.I.A. ft. Bun B and Rich Boy - Paper Planes (Diplo Remix)
*never heard this, still have to see that movie
Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On
*great track, i could see this as track of the decade
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
*nice hit, in a novelty sort of way
Hercules and Love Affair - Blind
*never heard it
Jay-Z - 99 Problems
*never heard it
R. Kelly - Ignition (Remix)
*never heard it, will have to download i am curious after that description.
The Knife - Heartbeats
*overrated, hate that voice
LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
*never heard it
LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
*^^
Outkast - B.O.B.
*^^
Outkast - Hey Ya!
*heard it way too many times, but yes this seems like a true track of the decade.
Radiohead - Idioteque
*not nearly as good as that Kid a album opener
The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers
*this was a short lived hype right?
The Walkmen - The Rat
*never heard it
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
^^

voting Missy.

Is Crazy the only song on this list with strings on it? The lack of strings in the complete 500 seems pervasive.

Also, you know, go fuck yourself, to those unfamiliar with the majority of these songs. Curious minds, etc.

Popture, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:49 (fourteen years ago) link

listening to that Ignition song right now, it's sweet. is this actually on a R Kelly album? or just a mixtape thing that sort of accidently became a big thing.

It's on Chocolate Factory.

ok cool thx :)

vrijdag 21 augustus 2009

this looks way better than the English, must change my settings.

I like almost all of these songs (not fussed re: The Rat, House of Jealous Lovers, and Blind) but I'm going to go for Heartbeats.

Akon/Family (Merdeyeux), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:14 (fourteen years ago) link

"Ignition (Remix)" without a doubt. However, if "Ghetto Musick" had been on here it would be tough. The only thing Outkast did that built on "B.O.B.", IMO.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link

the only ones i'd ever really want to hear again are the Annie and R.Kelly ones.

voted ignition (remix)

cherry blossom, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:18 (fourteen years ago) link

voting for "B.O.B." since out of the pop picks, it's the only one that'd be highest on my list from that artist. out of the alt/indie stuff, "Idiotheque" is OK, I guess? I'm not the biggest Radiohead fan but it feels to me like their fans should be able to point out a song other than that as their best of the decade.

some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:27 (fourteen years ago) link

not a singles band lol etc.

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I totally love the Missy Elliott, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, R Kelly and The Knife songs, but voting Animal Collective so stick that up yr kazoo all y'all.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy - CAN'T REMEMBER HOW IT GOES

Masonic, did you accidentally ban yourself from planet earth?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:44 (fourteen years ago) link

lol now saying the same thing about B.O.B (i just listened) wouldn't be strange at all. no hook, no nothing, straaaange number 1. it's sort jungly though, that's so nineties (and cool!)

Ludo, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Paper Planes is the best song, but I've never heard that remix so Crazy.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:49 (fourteen years ago) link

fyi to all - the paper planes remix just extends the outros and adds verses from rich boy and bun b

fleetwood (max), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:51 (fourteen years ago) link

all of which makes it worse than the original.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:53 (fourteen years ago) link

my favorite song of the decade is on this list ["Get Ur Freak On"]

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:55 (fourteen years ago) link

^yea i'd prob say that's my favorite on here too

mark cl, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:55 (fourteen years ago) link

tho i have no idea what my fav song of the decade is

mark cl, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:56 (fourteen years ago) link

and if I was running a magazine, the "this is probably the 'rock canon' 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'" song of the decade" is on the list too ["Hey Ya"]

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Listening to Crazy now. I don't think I've ever knowingly heard this song before. It's alright, but not a vote-winner.

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Where is option for "I don't think *any* of these songs is 'song of the decade'?"

― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, August 21, 2009 7:11 AM (2 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

OK, whats your favorite song of the decade. You get one choice.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, my "song of the decade" would probably be, like, Britney Spears' Toxic or some monumental Sugababes or Girls Aloud track. (though I'd have to spend hours deciding which one was the best.)

I honestly don't know. I suspect i'm too old for this kind of poll - I blinked and the 00s were over before I'd properly realised they were even halfway through.

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:59 (fourteen years ago) link

nothing from 2002 in this top 20? or was Losing My Edge originally released then?

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:00 (fourteen years ago) link

did toxic even make it on the p4k 500 list?

mark cl, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:02 (fourteen years ago) link

my favourite songs of the decade are likely to be

1. ciara ft. ludacris - oh
2. sweet female attitude - flowers
3. t.i. - what you know

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:02 (fourteen years ago) link

I voted "Maps," and I think it really should've been the PFM single of the decade, even if it wouldn't necessarily be my song of the decade. But I think maybe in a pinch, it could do the job.

Mordy, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:03 (fourteen years ago) link

pretty much all the acceptable acts in that top 20 made at least 10 better songs this decade. '99 problems' over anything off the blueprint is the most fucked up choice i guess.

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, it was (July 2002, I believe).

did toxic even make it on the p4k 500 list?

It was #141. Surprisingly low.

jaymc, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't fancy wading through that other thread much so sorry for asking here, but does anyone know if there's a simple text list of 1-500 somewhere?

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Not as simple as I'd like, but they've been posted piecemeal here:

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks a lot jaymc!

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:22 (fourteen years ago) link

'99 problems' over anything off the blueprint is the most fucked up choice i guess.

It may not be a better song that many of The Blueprint's tracks hin a purist, hip hop sense... but it certainly is the most iconic song of his '00s career. I don't have a problem with its placement.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:22 (fourteen years ago) link

some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Also, you know, go fuck yourself, to those unfamiliar with the majority of these songs.

Have only heard two of these ("Tunnels" and "Hey Ya"), so I'm off to go fuck myself.

To be fear, these two songs are both superb so maybe I should be taking Pitchfork more seriously.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

i know why 99 Problems is more popular with a lot of people, and it's got little to do with Jay-Z himself...so if 'most iconic' is just as a direct consequence of that then yeah i guess

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:27 (fourteen years ago) link

it's not the most iconic song of his '00s career.

No? What is?

jaymc, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:28 (fourteen years ago) link

What does it have to do with if not Jay-Z himself?

Mordy, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:28 (fourteen years ago) link

ROCK N' ROLL

out of genuine curiosity how on earth is it that the only two songs someone knows from the list would be the Arcade Fire and OutKast?

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:29 (fourteen years ago) link

No? What is?

i dunno, one of the other ones. i was saying on another thread recently that "Izzo" hasn't aged well and isn't even one of his more popular old hits anymore, going on iTunes sales and recurrent radio spins, but i'd still say it's more 'iconic' (slippery as that term is) than "99 Problems."

some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:31 (fourteen years ago) link

also definitely "Big Pimpin'" and possibly "Dirt Off Your Shoulders"

some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:31 (fourteen years ago) link

ok that was hysterical (Nelly'd be on mine though so don't yell at me)

some dude, Saturday, 29 August 2009 00:50 (fourteen years ago) link

either too far down the "caveman sexuality" line ("Bump & Grind", "Your Body's Callin'", "You Remind Me of Something") or too sacchrinely aspirational ("I Believe I Can Fly", "City of Gotham", "World's Greatest") for me to connect

IT JUST OCCURRED TO ME THAT THERE IS NO NELLY IN THEIR LIST

Odd, too, considering that, as I pointed out in the main thread, "Hot in Herre" was like their #29 of the decade's first half.

jaymc, Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:12 (fourteen years ago) link

fuck i hate to have to agree with masonic boom but yeah all of these songs are shite

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:29 (fourteen years ago) link

every one of em, eh?

tay zondven (k3vin k.), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:29 (fourteen years ago) link

sorry i was joking they are all amazing

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:32 (fourteen years ago) link

they are all the same song pretty much, so if u hate/love one ditto for the rest

tay zondven (k3vin k.), Saturday, 29 August 2009 04:33 (fourteen years ago) link

it seems like a lot of appreciation of Kelly (especially outside the pop world) is based on his being slightly ridiculous or far-out or functioning almost as a boneheaded parody of himself (e.g. I think sometimes he's an r&b favorite of people who find r&b silly because he's such a caricature of precisely the silliest stuff)

^^absolutely true, something i find pretty problematic and annoying, but this applies more to trapped in the closet than "ignition"

"ride wit me" and "country grammar" >>>>>>> "hot in herre"

lex pretend, Saturday, 29 August 2009 09:18 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah "country grammar" is pretty easily the best song of nelly's career imo, and belongs in any top whatever list of anything

tay zondven (k3vin k.), Saturday, 29 August 2009 12:12 (fourteen years ago) link

"hot in herre" > "e.i." > "country grammar" > "ride wit me" = "batter up" > any top whatever list of anything.

Tim F, Saturday, 29 August 2009 12:55 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm weird i guess but i put "dilemma" over most of those too, though i like most of nelly's early shit

tay zondven (k3vin k.), Saturday, 29 August 2009 12:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I leave ILM for a week and the challops brigade descend on Ignition? Too far ILM, it's like you're clowning yourselves to prove that nobody is safe from your contrarianism. This song is kindof above criticism fyi.
