"The Rat" hits way too close to home for me, lyrically. (I used to be fun, but now I'm just boring.)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 August 2009 11:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i think i like 16 of these--all except walkmen, arcade fire, crazy, and hojl

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 August 2009 11:27 (fifteen years ago) link

'Heartbeats' is probably my favourite song of the last 10 years

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:29 (fifteen years ago) link

btw, people complaining about this list. Please save it for the Paste list, where it will be much more fun.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 August 2009 11:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i actually like all of these songs - but 'One More Time', '99 Problems' and 'All My Friends' the least - more thru hype tho. guess i'm easy to please after all.

Went with Heartbeats

Hey, remember when ILM was supposed to be a bastion of intelligent music criticism?

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:36 (fifteen years ago) link

The lacklustre quality of my reactions to the songs is a reflection of the choices on offer.

I guess I need to listen to Get Yr Freak On again.

Of the 3 I like, I've listened to Heartbeats most recently and consistently. But that could just be access.

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:39 (fifteen years ago) link

For 4 weeks in 2000? xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 August 2009 11:39 (fifteen years ago) link

GYFO was great at the time, but now it sounds really dated to me.

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Voted "Heartbeat. Partly because most of the rest are horrible.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 21 August 2009 11:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Outkast - B.O.B. - MEH

struggling to think of a less 'meh' record

Ismael Klata, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:02 (fifteen years ago) link

GYFO was great at the time, but now it sounds really dated to me.

yeah...we were talking about this on, um, some hip-hop thread i can't remember recently. not "dated" as such, but...at the time it felt like an automatic era-defining choice, now it seems more like...a one-off, and very much of its time. i go back to missy's first two albums a lot more than to 'get ur freak on'.

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:03 (fifteen years ago) link

But Era-Defining Singles sound dated by their very nature -- that's the whole point of being era-defining.

post-contrarian meta-challop 2009 (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 21 August 2009 12:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i think "anomalous" might be the word i use: it doesn't feel as though it's representative of either that period of music, or of missy herself.

or maybe: i don't go back to it half as much as i thought i would.

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:06 (fifteen years ago) link

it is probably the best song on this list (tho), sigh.

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:07 (fifteen years ago) link

it's representative of the Indian vibe trend in rap around that time

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 12:12 (fifteen years ago) link

oh obvs i don't like anco either, so i like 15 of 20.

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Voted All My Friends, not objectively but because of my age and it's relevancy to the 2000s as I experienced them.

Popture, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Is Crazy the only song on this list with strings on it? The lack of strings in the complete 500 seems pervasive.

Also, you know, go fuck yourself, to those unfamiliar with the majority of these songs. Curious minds, etc.

Popture, Friday, 21 August 2009 12:49 (fifteen years ago) link

listening to that Ignition song right now, it's sweet. is this actually on a R Kelly album? or just a mixtape thing that sort of accidently became a big thing.

It's on Chocolate Factory.

vrijdag 21 augustus 2009

this looks way better than the English, must change my settings.

I like almost all of these songs (not fussed re: The Rat, House of Jealous Lovers, and Blind) but I'm going to go for Heartbeats.

Akon/Family (Merdeyeux), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:14 (fifteen years ago) link

"Ignition (Remix)" without a doubt. However, if "Ghetto Musick" had been on here it would be tough. The only thing Outkast did that built on "B.O.B.", IMO.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:17 (fifteen years ago) link

the only ones i'd ever really want to hear again are the Annie and R.Kelly ones.

voted ignition (remix)

cherry blossom, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:18 (fifteen years ago) link

voting for "B.O.B." since out of the pop picks, it's the only one that'd be highest on my list from that artist. out of the alt/indie stuff, "Idiotheque" is OK, I guess? I'm not the biggest Radiohead fan but it feels to me like their fans should be able to point out a song other than that as their best of the decade.

some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:27 (fifteen years ago) link

not a singles band lol etc.

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I totally love the Missy Elliott, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, R Kelly and The Knife songs, but voting Animal Collective so stick that up yr kazoo all y'all.

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy - CAN'T REMEMBER HOW IT GOES

Masonic, did you accidentally ban yourself from planet earth?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:44 (fifteen years ago) link

lol now saying the same thing about B.O.B (i just listened) wouldn't be strange at all. no hook, no nothing, straaaange number 1. it's sort jungly though, that's so nineties (and cool!)

Ludo, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Paper Planes is the best song, but I've never heard that remix so Crazy.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:49 (fifteen years ago) link

fyi to all - the paper planes remix just extends the outros and adds verses from rich boy and bun b

fleetwood (max), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:51 (fifteen years ago) link

all of which makes it worse than the original.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:53 (fifteen years ago) link

my favorite song of the decade is on this list ["Get Ur Freak On"]

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago) link

^yea i'd prob say that's my favorite on here too

mark cl, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago) link

tho i have no idea what my fav song of the decade is

mark cl, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:56 (fifteen years ago) link

and if I was running a magazine, the "this is probably the 'rock canon' 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'" song of the decade" is on the list too ["Hey Ya"]

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Listening to Crazy now. I don't think I've ever knowingly heard this song before. It's alright, but not a vote-winner.

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Where is option for "I don't think *any* of these songs is 'song of the decade'?"

― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, August 21, 2009 7:11 AM (2 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

OK, whats your favorite song of the decade. You get one choice.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean, my "song of the decade" would probably be, like, Britney Spears' Toxic or some monumental Sugababes or Girls Aloud track. (though I'd have to spend hours deciding which one was the best.)

I honestly don't know. I suspect i'm too old for this kind of poll - I blinked and the 00s were over before I'd properly realised they were even halfway through.

hüzün (Masonic Boom), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago) link

nothing from 2002 in this top 20? or was Losing My Edge originally released then?

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 21 August 2009 14:00 (fifteen years ago) link

did toxic even make it on the p4k 500 list?

mark cl, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:02 (fifteen years ago) link

my favourite songs of the decade are likely to be

1. ciara ft. ludacris - oh
2. sweet female attitude - flowers
3. t.i. - what you know

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted "Maps," and I think it really should've been the PFM single of the decade, even if it wouldn't necessarily be my song of the decade. But I think maybe in a pinch, it could do the job.

Mordy, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:03 (fifteen years ago) link

pretty much all the acceptable acts in that top 20 made at least 10 better songs this decade. '99 problems' over anything off the blueprint is the most fucked up choice i guess.

lex pretend, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

it's irrational hate! youre not supposed to understand it.

I can't find the words to explain how my feelings about the following dovetail with what Dan was saying above, but umm it seems like a lot of appreciation of Kelly (especially outside the pop world) is based on his being slightly ridiculous or far-out or functioning almost as a boneheaded parody of himself (e.g. I think sometimes he's an r&b favorite of people who find r&b silly because he's such a caricature of precisely the silliest stuff) -- this gets in the way of my liking some of his stuff, though for some reason I don't mind his inspirational for-the-kids tunes, I seem to remember "Thoia Thoing" being low on R-Kelly-ism and high on a good beat and oingy noises, and part of why I'm cool with "Ignition" is that it seemed like this moment where he successfully implicated the entire world in his song instead of seeming ridiculous -- you know, like most people want to drink and have fun on weekends, so he seems pretty OTM and reasonable on that one.

nabisco, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess I shouldn't focus on ridiculousness cuz that's not a bad thing, but his particular ridiculousness is, as mentioned, pretty buffoonish and dumb sometimes

nabisco, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah -- at his core I consider R. to be a brilliant and prolific at his craft, while also crude and not terribly booksmart in ways that come across in his music and public persona. That's not at all an uncommon combination of traits in popular music, but obviously race and some other factors unique to R. Kelly make who appreciates his music and why a really loaded topic.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:06 (fifteen years ago) link

^^sort of the flip side of what you said above, some dude, about your own likes/dislikes having more to do with sonic characteristics. With a lot of popular music, rap in particular, there seems to be more of a judgement based at least partly on what a track represents, rather than purely how it sounds. I think there is something very gracious and universal about "ignition (remix)" that make it a great track, especially if you ignore all of the stuff surrounding his real-life persona.

Dan S, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I think "Ignition (Remix)" is massively charming in part because of its sense of levity; I can see why this very thing might annoy people who think "omg best song ever" affairs should be more of an unmistakable big event. Of course R Kelly does intensity too but it's mostly kinda scary when he does.

Tim F, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:25 (fifteen years ago) link

well just to be clear, I'm not saying I'm put off him because I think other people are liking him the wrong way, or something -- it's just that if you generally prefer your music not-too-cartoonish, and want your r&b to be sharp, and aren't super-inclined to marvel or gawk or be charmed by the (admittedly compelling) ridiculousness of him, it's just gonna seem a little dumb no matter what other people think. some of that stuff requires shrugging and giving in to the goofiness and dumbness. which can be fine. (not "ignition," though, I don't think.)

nabisco, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah. But he really has a lot of songs that have a minimum of funny grammar or crazy sex metaphors and are just good R&B.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:30 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean, I didn't want to get too Lex-y on any of these threads about the PF list, but really it does annoy me greatly that R. Kelly has one token entry on this list when people like Jay-Z or the Neptunes, who I think he was either on par with or very close to in terms of making great radio hits this decade, got more like 10 entries.

some dude, Friday, 28 August 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago) link

^^absolutely true, something i find pretty problematic and annoying, but this applies more to trapped in the closet than "ignition"

"ride wit me" and "country grammar" >>>>>>> "hot in herre"

lex pretend, Saturday, 29 August 2009 09:18 (fifteen years ago) link
