haha you lived to zing another day there didn't you

Dave Matthews Band is the best band ever.

No they're not.

Their music is the best there is.

False in a manner that defies all semblance of language.

DMB is full of musical talent

If so, they do a fabulous job of suppressing it.

....and Dave himself is the sexiest man alive!!!

Clearly a matter of opinion, but not an opinion I happen to share with you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:07 (twenty years ago) link

Shh! That's not really too beneficial to my argument, Kara. Hehe...heh...ahem. Folks, please desreguard all DMB entusiast's statements. They know not what they do.

Honestly, he's not that kind of "macho man around the guys, ladies man in public" kind of person. You don't have to believe me, but I think the wholesome validity he has is near impossible to fake. His outlook on life is much more pious and emotive than one might think someone in his position would have.
I'm going to assume you're a woman. That said, you can understand that a LOT of men are what you described above (putting on a nice little "sensitive male" front to get what they want) but unbeknownst to them...it's obvious and we can figure it out. I can't commit to memory any instances in which he seemed less than sincere than what his lyrics convey him as.
I really believe that he is genuinely writing his feelings, and I'm sure that if he thought a woman would take offense to those lyrics and get turned off to his music that he would have at least restructured the song.

Allison, Monday, 30 June 2003 20:08 (twenty years ago) link

Couldn't you just have responded "Clearly a matter of opinion, but not an opinion I happen to share with you," to each point, Alex?

Couldn't you just have responded "Clearly a matter of opinion, but not an opinion I happen to share with you," to each point, Alex?

Well, no. Kara expressed those sentiments as absolutes, so I decided to respond in kind. That DMB is NOT the greatest band ever isn't just my opinion, it's a hard, cold, carved-in-stone F A C T. As to whether he's sexy or not, that more of a gray area. I don't find him sexy, but then you might.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

Just like to say that I, for one, would rather consume an oversized, puss-filled, pickled aardvark testicle than take note of a certain person in NYC. He may be full of great musical insight, but if so, he does a fabulous job of suppressing it.

Allison, Monday, 30 June 2003 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

puss- or pus-filled aardvark testicle?

either way, a very strong image. B+

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:24 (twenty years ago) link

Alex, is right. As we all know, the greatest band ever is Wyld Stalyons.

oops (Oops), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:25 (twenty years ago) link

Allison, when are you gonna join us on some other threads? You rock, as has been observed, and might well have fun talking about the other stuff we talk about!

Just sayin', is all.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:07 (twenty years ago) link

I really hadn't had a desire to until just recently. Guess I'll stray a little from this thread and check everything out.
Just registered today...I think. Doesn't look like it's working though. =(

Too late, J0hn...I already inducted her into freakdom back on the 19th.

I think Allison should become an ILX regular.

Let It Be Known that Jeremy "Kingfish" Salmon officially made his comment in the Almighty DMB Thread whilst wasting time at work on the 1st day of July in the Most Foul Year of Our Lord 2003.

in other news, as has probably been mentioned previously--one's opinion of DMB is slightly different if one was a university student in the mid-late 90's. Then, you'd have EVEN MORE reason to hate him, cuz of those two fucks on yer dorm floor who'd play the record over and over and OVER AND FUCKING OVER AGAIN...

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:46 (twenty years ago) link

you dumbnuts. Dave Matthews Band are the most talented group out there from the last 20 years. Most of you havent heard an entire album or seen them in concert. So what if some fans use dmb as make out music. At least some of us can get chicks!

"hike up your dress a little more/ and show your world to me:" is a funny line. dont you guys like humor in your music? do you have to really take music so seriously? its only music. I like music as much as the next guy but why do you hate a band so much. At least they play their instruments and write their own songs. Unlike those Pop idol 'artists'.
As for yuppies /lawyers/accountants liking them so what? Is that a reason to hate a band?
Why not hate the overhyped Nirvana, the WORST thing to ever happen to music. They were rubbish at their instruments, Kurt couldnt sing , He was a junkie. They spawned a million of horrible 'indie & alternative' bands meaning an entire generation missed out on bands whoc ould actually play!

George T, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:48 (twenty years ago) link

Do you need a hug, George?

I'm trying to figure out what group came out in 1983 that was more talented than DMB. I'm hoping it was Kajagoogoo.

Haha since when did being able to sing or play instruments matter? Give me Nirvana over DMB,Creed, Limp Bizkit et al any day.

Dan, maybe he meant Wham?

Sammy James, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:18 (twenty years ago) link

And why did it say '7 new answers' when there was only 3?
Has Dave Matthews Band broke ILX?

This thread is awesome. It's like the Highlander, never going to die until Sean Connery comes along to lop its head off.

As long as google lives so will this thread.

Sammy James, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:27 (twenty years ago) link

i hate DMB because of their rabid fans. when people become violent over a band they are not fans, they are clones. i like music because of the way it touches me, not cuz you and all the rest of your pot smoking abercrombie wearing friends like it.

kers3480, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

"As for yuppies /lawyers/accountants liking them so what? Is that a reason to hate a band?"

These same people like Huey Lewis.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:46 (twenty years ago) link

I wish googlers would start their own thread: "Why DMB must be defended." Because THIS thread is about hating DMB, NOT about why [you/we] like/should like them.

We shouldn't have to have *good* reasons for hating them - just *many* reasons.

(come on 1000!)

My roomates work for our university's computer service and last summer they had to key into every single dorm room on campus for computer maintinence. They reported back that an estimated 8 out of 10 dorm rooms have a DMB poster on the wall. The next closest was, somewhat surprisingly, Scarface.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 23:08 (twenty years ago) link

George, I hate to oppose someone who is "on my side", but really..DMB ISN'T the most talented band in the past 20 years and you saying so only helps to confirm their beliefs that all their fans are narrow-minded college kids that have very low musical standards.
Please don't encourage the regulars...they're blood-sucking fiends, the lot of them!

OK I am not having the best day of all time and Siegbran's bongo solo just cheered me up somethin' first. Hails to you, S. Now if only somebody would post a picture of that dwarf from Abruptum, preferably photoshopped so he's jammin' with the DMB, my mood power-up will be complete.
