it's weird how simultaneously understated and big Make It Happen is

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Saturday, 1 August 2009 14:58 (fourteen years ago) link

that's how I feel about "Someday."

Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 August 2009 15:09 (fourteen years ago) link

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Saturday, 1 August 2009 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

the video, that is. i'm still a little in shock from this news.

the vocal layers on The Roof are ridiculous

Christyles, Sunday, 2 August 2009 11:33 (fourteen years ago) link

can always count on you

how bout them giggles on "cruise control," where she's doing the rasta accent. the mariah cackle is ace.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Sunday, 9 August 2009 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Never got any better (or less bad) than her debut.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 10 August 2009 06:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Or, OK, "Music Box", which I also went for in the poll, is a bit better :)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 10 August 2009 06:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

alex?

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Friday, 14 August 2009 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, clear tampering. And I say that as one of Glitter's 7 voters.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Friday, 14 August 2009 23:41 (fourteen years ago) link

interesting.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 15 August 2009 10:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't even remember what I voted for. I know it wasn't Charmbracelet or Glitter, though.

!Alicia!, Saturday, 15 August 2009 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

some bullshit

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 17 August 2009 17:37 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't even know how you would game a thread like this or why. i'm almost inclined to believe it's all actual votes for lack of any better explanation.

some dude, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Wish she released an album done in the gloriously 70s style of songs like “Bliss.” Isn’t that wordless shit she does throughout that song Debussy-level gorgeous?

Turangalila, Thursday, 3 September 2009 06:38 (fourteen years ago) link

one month passes...

for all the talk on the p4k poll thread about how The Emancipation of Mimi should have been in the top 20 , it couldn't even beat 2 of the other albums of the decade in a poll of ILM's Mariah Carey fans?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:40 (fourteen years ago) link

dude, it was rigged.

surm, Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:42 (fourteen years ago) link

it was?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:42 (fourteen years ago) link

wow 1st album in 1990. I had no idea she had been around that long.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:44 (fourteen years ago) link

yea, it was. no one's even heard charmbracelet.

surm, Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:48 (fourteen years ago) link

xcept for maybe me and christyles.

surm, Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:49 (fourteen years ago) link

im sure the lex will have(is it bad or is it just an album that bombed?)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:51 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not even sure lex has (iirc, he hasn't heard butterfly in its entirety).

i haven't listened to it enough but from what i can tell, it's not too bad. just didn't have any smashes, and bombed.

surm, Thursday, 8 October 2009 21:53 (fourteen years ago) link

one month passes...

somebody needs to listen to "My All" now and confirm that no one else could do that like that - those vocals in the 1st chorus where she goes up high

oops i accidentally made it personal (surm), Thursday, 19 November 2009 23:46 (fourteen years ago) link

she was better than i thought she would be on the alan carr show last night but she does struggle to cover all her range now doesnt she?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 20 November 2009 10:46 (fourteen years ago) link

xcept for maybe me and christyles.

Quite possibly, yes. Charmbracelet isn't one of her strongest albums (it might possibly be her weakest, vocally) but it certainly contains some of her best songwriting."Yours", "Clown", "Lullaby", "Subtle Invitation" and the Def Leppard cover make up the album's few highlights.

damn the glitter album is good (all my life ! ! !)

yeahhh (surm), Thursday, 11 March 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

has anyone listened to this album?

yeahhh (surm), Thursday, 11 March 2010 00:29 (fourteen years ago) link

No, I've never heard a whole album. One time I almost bought 'Daydream' for like $4 but then I didn't. Wasn't it supposed to be godawful, or was that just the film?

This object perpetually attempts to sell itself on eBay. (Stevie D), Thursday, 11 March 2010 03:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i really don't think anyone's listened to it. the film is supposed to be awful.

the album is like... lush, bubbly, buzz-y club music from the 70s, with hooks and synths as tipsy as champagne

yeahhh (surm), Thursday, 11 March 2010 03:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Doesn't Eric H. like Glitter (the album)?? I've never listened to the whole thing but I enjoy "Didn't Mean to Turn You On" and "All My Life" well enough. I watched most of the movie on Youtube once, which seemed appropriate.

lou, Thursday, 11 March 2010 03:56 (fourteen years ago) link

loverboy (on Glitter) is such a great song. took me a while to figure that out

surm, Saturday, 9 May 2015 22:06 (nine years ago) link

Nourry, Wednesday, 13 May 2015 22:48 (nine years ago) link

i need to do a mariah remix poll at some point.

Mimi is my favorite but I'm gonna vote for Butterfly, because it's amazing and deserves a vote... also Emotions is very underrated (has one of my favorite Mariah songs "Make It Happen", plus some great balladry overall, and a cool retro feel)... Daydream is also vote worthy ("Underneath the Stars" !!)

the only ones I don't own are Charmbracelet and the Christmas Album

― The Brainwasher, Monday, 20 July 2009 14:21 (6 years ago) Permalink

Make it Happen is my bf's favorite.

― I love rainbow cookies (surm), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:24 (6 years ago) Permalink

"Make It Happen" is good, yes. So is "Someday," off the debut.

― Heric E. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:26 (6 years ago) Permalink

I fell down a Mariah wormhole tonight and OMG "Make It Happen".

MC + C+C must be one of the most underrated (in the sense of just not being talked about) great collaborative partnerships in pop. I suppose they probably did less than two handfuls of songs together though.
