Turns out Echoes of Eternity are pretty decent when they actually bother to write songs that don't all sound the same. Still not fantastic, but As Shadows Burn kind of rocks at times, and the female vocalist is much better integrated. Maybe they aren't really boring live anymore, although I wouldn't place bets on that one.

Their debut was really disappointing, but it looks like I'll have to give the new one a listen.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 01:12 (fourteen years ago) link
My review of their debut was so negative that it got rejected from the publication that assigned it to me, so you can imagine how I felt about that one. This is a vast, vast improvement.

I forget who was enthusing about the new Converge, but damn. Got it today and it is ferocious.

is there even a release date for new converge album?
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 03:23 (fourteen years ago) link
Whoa, exciting news! I didn't know anyone else on here had heard it yet. Cannot wait.

I don't know what the release date is. I got it from Epitaph via Play MPE software. Thirteen songs, four of 'em in the 90-second range and the last one is one of their seven-minute moody epics.

Poll on my MSN blog: When should a band/artist pack it in? (You can pick up to three answers, which makes it better than an ILM poll.)

Haha. That Black Dahlia Murder artwork is so bad its hilarious.

Pretty impressed by the Eagle Twin record on first listen. Guitar tone is thick as hell. One or two of the songs sound like Mark Lanegan if Screaming Trees had been a doom band

I've been spinning that Nachtmystium mini-CD a bunch this week, really liking it.

unperson, who got gender reassignment surgery (and why was it a bad thing)?
― Highly trained BBQ chef (rockapads), Friday, 31 July 2009 17:53 (fourteen years ago) link
The drummer from Rhino Bucket and the singer of, I believe, Cretin.
― If you think drum machines have no soul, you've never met my wife (J3ff T.), Friday, 31 July 2009 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link
Not all of them were based on real-life examples. I know there was a real band where that happened, but the names escape me; I just tossed that one (and several others) in for humorous effect. Obviously, there are counterexamples to many of the reasons I cited; Napalm Death has no original members, and Lemmy is 100, but I don't want either ND or Motörhead to break up.
― unperson, Friday, 31 July 2009 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link
It was Cretin, Phil.

interesting, i hadn't heard of that.
fwiw i voted for 'reality show recruitment', 'members file suit against each other', and acoustic/orchestral greatest hits, which seem to be leading.

Remember King Kobra from the 80s? Their singer had gender reassignment surgery.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 31 July 2009 19:00 (fourteen years ago) link
I'm glad that TG didn't split up after gender realignment thingy.
Hey Unperson, I think you should play Vikernes. You're better looking than that Dungeons and Dragons elf guy who's playing him in the biopic anyhow.
How many people have actually died on stage? Stayley OD'ed on stage? GG Allin, nearly.

Not metal, but dude from Morphine died on stage, didn't he? Or at least the process started on stage.
And Dimebag, obvs.

― kid cruti (roxymuzak), Friday, 31 July 2009 20:31 (fourteen years ago) link
mainly i just hate their logo
Nah, I totally see where you were coming from. I just think the new one tries to keep the vibe of Nocturnal going and fails in almost every respect. But as far as retro lookin' album covers from 2009 go, I do like Suffocation and Warbringer ones.
― 3 mods 1 banhammer (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 31 July 2009 20:33 (fourteen years ago) link
nocturnal is from 2007! they only have one album since then

Mudrian should be glad that review exists. He's got so many people lining up to polish his rod these days, it's good to be reminded what the majority still thinks of metal.
I got a copy of the book in the mail today. I wish it was more tech- and process-heavy, but it arose out of articles published in Decibel, not EQ, so for what it is, it's pretty damn great.
― unperson, Sunday, 2 August 2009 01:13 (fourteen years ago) link
Deaththrone? Apparently he's not only unqualified to read a book about metal bands... he's also unqualified to write about what he just read.

Not strictly a metal release, but certainly of interest to many here. Promos for the new SubArachnoid Space on Crucial Blast should be going out soon. Highly recommended. Production is by Steve Lobdell (ex-Faust).
― Nate Carson, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:55 (fourteen years ago) link
I love SubArachnoid Space, Ned does too. There's a few fans on here.I didn't know they had left Relapse.

SAS has been off Relapse for about 7 years haha. Check out their two most excellent releases on Strange Attractors Audio House. Particularly The Red Veil.
But honestly, Eight Bells is the best thing Melynda's ever done.
You know Mason's been out of the band for years, right?
― Nate Carson, Monday, 3 August 2009 20:35 (fourteen years ago) link
Oh i have the red veil. I dunno why I thought they were still on relapse! Musta been thinking of another band!
