Well the Wire & Glass cover is boring, but I love the cover for Endless Wire, the proper album, which is what we're discussing here, incase that wasn't clear.

A Rush of Cold Blood To The Head (Bimble...), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 03:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm really starting to appreciate how great Daltrey's vocals are on this (and produced by Billy Nicholls -- kind of interesting). Almost feel tempted to start another thread about the decline of the manly voice in modern rock, but I'm too sleepy to check for existing threads *and* I'm probably thinking mostly of alt rock, rather than chart stuff, and the Who weren't alt, so maybe it's a stupid idea.

But wow, I haven't heard singing like that in a while. Surprised I care so much.

you guys are all making my die to hear this thing. Gonna have to pick it up.

I just came here to say the same thing! I've honestly never been that crazy about him, Pete's voice is so much better I think. But I've listened to this album a couple of times today and I can only think of one or two songs in the past when I've been so impressed with Daltrey's performance. For the parts that are his on this album, he really puts a lot into every line, never lets up.

And I find I can't complain about the album itself either, at all. It just seems quietly, almost modestly brilliant. Not a bad song on it. I do think it's kindof weird that Pete almost sounds like Tom Waits at the beginning of "In The Ether"! Not sure why he attempted to sing that way. When he gets on the piano like that, though I just turn to mush.

Speaking as someone who was very disappointed in Scoop 3, well I'm just pleased as punch with this. It didn't *have* to be good, but it is, and I'm happy to know Pete still has it in him.

Just watched the DVD that comes with this. Nothing wrong with it at all, either. Daltrey looks quite young considering how old he must be now. I gotta say I really like Zak Starkey's whole look. He's a rock star all unto himself! Looking at the liner notes, Pete says that because he (Pete) delayed the project, wanting to make sure it was right, Starkey couldn't participate as much on the album cause he was touring/recording with Oasis. I only knew Starkey had been in Johnny Marr's Healers. (shows you how much I follow Oasis anymore) Roger Daltrey's liner notes are also well worth reading. Those who downloaded this didn't get the full deal, I'm afraid.

I can't believe Mike Post is actually the guy I thought he was: the one who did Hill Street Blues theme. I bought that 45 when I was a kid. You could buy 7" singles at the nearest pharmacy/drugstore.

Also what's this about Curtis Mayfield?

"We climb up high/to the golden station/Curtis Mayfield ain't waiting long"

- Mirror Door

He mentions Johnny Cash and Led Zeppelin in the same song. I happen to think this is fantastic.

i really like it tho. the first time i heard it i sniggered cynically at the waitsian growl, but i think this might be my favourite song on the album... GREAT piano.

it's too bad starkey didn't drum on the whole record, because the drums on black widow's eyes are the best on the album. he really does have those wild moon rolls down

Re: the header. Will The Who still be around in umpteen years?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 23:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Bump. I think it's a shame I'm the only one willing to keep this thread from dying.

Try the song "Tea & Theatre" and then tell me this isn't the best album released all year.

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Saturday, 18 November 2006 03:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I almost feel like this would be getting more attention if the album was a really embarrasing disaster. I still can't quite deal with the Tom Waits vocals on that one track, but otherwise it's definitely at least one of my top 10 albums of the year...and I'm hardly a crazy Who fan.

It did inspire me to finally get a CD of Quadrophenia (which I hadn't heard in a while as my vinyl is packed away). Actually prefer the production on this to that in many ways. Also was reminded how much I love Bell Boy, but that's another thread.

otm. and i think the (relative) lack of attention is due to a certain level of shock that it didn't outright suck balls. the fact that it's more ambitious than anything since quadrophenia (and more fully realized than anything since the who by numbers) just confused the majority of the music press, who probably already had their damning reviews half-written before they heard the record.

Yeah, no kidding. I've been listening to this a lot, and... it's not the Who Who--the Live at Leeds/Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy one--but it sounds like they've seriously taken stock of what they've got left, and made something that's actually meaningful to them & by extension... well, me. I kind of love it. That "kind of" may turn out to be unnecessary, too.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 18 November 2006 23:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Seeing them play most of the album live with Z. Starkey on drums really pushed me over the top into the "love it like crazy" camp. I will indeed be purchasing the DVD of the 11-4-06 hollywood bowl show that I attented.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Sunday, 19 November 2006 01:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I figured out that the beginning guitar part of Endless Wire reminds me of the sound of Red House Painters' Mark Kozelek's guitar. I swear it's the same guitar sound, same production, more or less.

One thing I especially like about this album is the sequence of tracks. Because you're listening and then all of a sudden you think it's just begun to repeat itself and gone back to track one - when Fragments of Fragments starts. And then you realize that no, your CD player didn't just magically know you wanted to play it all again from the start, no...in fact, there are a few even more amazing tributaries to navigate such as the stellar "We Got A Hit" and of course, "Endless Wire".

Also I plan to fly to San Diego to see them, so fuck yooz. They're not fucking getting away from me. If this is the last chance I have, then so be it. I'm going.

Despite my drunkenness, I've found a suitable ticket and an agreeable airline ticket, too. It's the day before my birthday, their gig. All I need is a hotel, but that's the least of my worries. I'd sleep in an alley to see them. They won't leave this continent without my presence, mark my words. They will not leave here without me. Not now, not ever, not without me just once with me, they will be with me.

AND DOESN'T THE GUITAR AT THE BEGINNING OF "2000 YEARS" SOUND LIKE LED ZEPPELIN CIRCA LED ZEP III? EH???

AND DOESN'T ROGER DALTREY JUST EXCEED YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF HIM TWICE OVER?

SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT CARING! SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!

It's an excellent album. Sad I hadn't heard it before they played in NYC this past September. Add to that the fact that I d/l'ed their Hyde Park show from this year and it's great.

three months pass...
So I saw the Who last night. It was pretty good. They did this great song I hadn't known of before called "Real Good Lookin' Boy". I think it's supposed to be about Elvis.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNP2jxAdpk8

I also tried listening to their latest album again just to be sure...and yes I still love it. Much more than their performance last night.

Bimble, Friday, 2 March 2007 12:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean just think how many years those guys have been performing all those songs in front of all those people, night after night after night. You have to respect them for that alone. I can't believe that "My Generation" is 40 years old.

Bimble, Friday, 2 March 2007 12:28 (seventeen years ago) link

name another band/artist that been around as long that can open a show with their first single ("i can't explain") and close it with the last song on their last album ("tea and theatre"). i mean, convincingly.

Lawrence the Looter, Sunday, 4 March 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Heheh! You know it man! I was so pleased to hear I Can't Explain, actually - it's not one of those songs by them I ever think about but I like it, in fact I couldn't get it out of my head the day after the show.

Bimble, Sunday, 4 March 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought their visuals on the giant screen behind them were fantastic, too. Best visuals I've ever seen at a concert. Pictures of people in the 60's...a few 70's punks...old pictures of the band...and just plain animated sort of art stuff.

Bimble, Sunday, 4 March 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember when I first got into Who's Next. I was swinging on children's swings in the dark next to my apartment complex. There was no one around at all, and I had it playing in my headphones. Suddenly these songs that I used to hear on classic radio all the time in my childhood made sense in a way they never had before.

three weeks pass...
I thank goodness this thread has the word "umpteen" in it, otherwise it would be unsearchable.

I can't seem to get over the Who of late. The two songs "Old Red Wine" and "Real Good Looking Boy" have obsessed me, and the Endless Wire album only comes in a close second. People write that album off, but what is so wrong with "We Got A Hit" or the title track?

I can only conclude that there are some people in this world who are just mad fans of Pete Townshend's songwriting and other people who just aren't.

I mean what did you guys expect out of them anyway, hiphop? I admit the album isn't perfect, there are a few songs where I nearly fall asleep, but that's why it's so great when the next brilliant song comes along after these and wakes me up to such beautiful and compelling music.
