Insane that there’s two guys named Chad in this band.

as crucial a detail in explaining this band as the fact that there are two guys named "gord" in the tragically hip

From song meanings.com:
The entire song represents a transition from the illusion of Christianity to the enlightenment of Hinduism.

i recently subjected my friends to this and the consensus is that it's cringe but also that the 'let me ride' bit is pretty great. i feel like this song has a spiritual connection to 'hold me thrill me kiss me kill me' with the cartoonish riff and the orchestral stuff and the vocal over-performance

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Monday, 14 June 2021 19:00 (two years ago) link

I still unironically love the song. I used to play the cd backstage in high school while waiting for my entrances in The Music Man.

missed many cues.

Self-XP It was the album before that, entitt V, which had songs from Mummy Returns and the first Fast & Furious film.

blue whales on ambient (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 14 June 2021 19:45 (two years ago) link

The collection of songs that became V was never intended to be released as an album. Guitarist Chad Taylor said, "The goal was to prepare songs for the next studio session. MCA got a hold of the material and pushed us to call it an album." The songs were originally going to be released free to fans as a collection called Ecstatic Fanatic.

“I, Alone”, the second single off of Throwing Copper, according to Songfacts, this song is an adaptation of The Bible’s Luke 8:22-25, where Jesus Christ uses his holy powers to put a storm at bay.

Ed K. In Being Manipulated By Charismatic Conman SHOCKAH!

oh yeah it's amazing

wait what?

yes, but growing up in SE PA, these guys were so dudly they willed themselves classic. they wouldn't stop touring the area! and the mythology surrounding them was ridiculous. every roommate i had in college would tell me something about this band (they useta be skinheads/nazis, you know) - one d00d went so far as to hang a picture of them promoting whatever tour it was in '97 in our room!

I used to remember people saying that's why Ed shaved his head, but it always felt urban legend-y, like a twist on Marilyn Manson's ribs or whatever.

StanM, Tuesday, 21 February 2023 22:54 (one year ago) link

so thoughts after reading this:

*Tynes talks a lot of shit for someone with a demon's resume
*How could you file bankruptcy 5 times in an 8 year span when a Chapter 11 takes 7 years to discharge
*The fucking Charlotte Hornets's owner's kid was their temporary lead singer for a few years...lol
*it's kinda not shocking that Ed just fired everyone and went on with hired guns. there's very little distinct about the bass, guitar playing, and drumming in this band, they sort of live or die by his vocals and songwriting (for better or worse). this isn't like Slayer changing drummers and having a different feel rhythmically, very plug and play.
*Taylor seems naive to a ridiculous degree and he was a dick for what he did to his other bandmates in taking a larger cut
*of course Gracey is a Trumper
*Ed seems to let Hynes way too far off of the hook because of his anger at Taylor

I wonder if Ed K. is mad about wasting his last good scalp years with a shaved head.

Live fans.

Back in the 1990s I went on a summer trip bringing together different high schools. One of the participants was Ed Kowalczyk’s sister. Some Live fans kept hovering around her, expecting her to give insights into Kowalczyk’s lyrics, even though she was years younger than her famous brother and probably wouldn’t know anything.

But I still remember decades later that these fans raved around Throwing Copper, but whenever the conversation turned to Secret Samadhi (then the most recent release), they seemed confused and somehow disappointed by the album.

addendum: I have it on good authority that the people at Pachyderm Studios found a "metric ton" of porno mags stashed all over the place after Live vacated the premises.
