"El Rocio" almost redeems Shapes...

I am way too irrationally excited for the Polvo reunion, given that I can't actually make it through any of their albums in one sitting. They need a best of record like whoa.

One of my favorite 90s bands. Lived in Chapel Hill, NC, so saw 'em a couple times before I ever heard a record (Cor-Crane was already out, so I didn't have to wait long). Great live show. Lot of folks back then weren't happy w/ Cor-Crane, but I think its best songs are as good as anything that came after. Esp. "Can I Ride" and "Channel Changer". Celebrate the New Dark Age and Today's Active Lifestyles are great from front to back though. For whatever reason, I lost interest after that. As far as I'm concerned, a random mix of songs off the first three = the only "Greatest Hits" that matters.
Still, a well-selected retrospective of some kind might do well, and god knows, they deserve it.

did someone see the reunion show and can report?
― Zeno, Saturday, 14 June 2008 17:18 (fifteen years ago) link
dc show was great! sounded like the old polvo. new drummer is pretty sick.

Woooooo Polvo!
Reunion is good.

I was trying to fall asleep one night this week and all of a sudden I remembered this band. It was really weird. I don't remember a whole lot about them but I remember liking them to some degree.
― Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 22 June 2008 08:21 (fifteen years ago) link
at times they were more noodly than I remembered
but the "hits" from today's active and celebrate the new dark age were great
fractured (like chandeliers) closed the new york show, totally awesome
― dmr, Sunday, 22 June 2008 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link
I was trying to figure out which album I taped songs from. I looked at the album covers on allmusic. I think it was actually that sorta orangey thing from 1993.

OkaY WOAH wOAH you're telling me they did a cover version of Mexican Radio?
I shall report back later.

The singer had a Jugghaid hat amirite?

Garrett (since you're in BOS too) or anyone who's seen them recently: is Ash singing different lyrics for the verses in "Feather of Forgiveness?" Obviously it was hard to hear but the syllables I could pick out sounded way different. Weird 'cause all the lyrics on that song are cool.
Yeah this is a dorky obscuro question but whatever.

after seeing the show and listening to the new songs, here's the "scoop": Polvo is going STONER!

There were some parts I actually disliked, and virtually no original lyrics I cared to sing anymore. Making changes to old material was a challenge, but it turned out to be a lot of fun also, and suddenly I was happy to be playing the songs again.”

"Fractured Like Chandeliers" is pretty goddamn amazing, and that whole EP is pretty great. I don't really get any of the other ones, really. Even Today's Active Lifestyles I feel only has 2-3 good songs.
― Shushtari (res), Monday, 13 October 2008 01:37 (fifteen years ago) link
by the way, how do the play in concert with all the weird tunings? do they just have a hundred guitars?
― Shushtari (res), Monday, 13 October 2008 01:44 (fifteen years ago) link
I wish I saw their show when they rolled through Seattle last month.
― van smack, Monday, 13 October 2008 03:15 (fifteen years ago) link
they don't, they just play them more casually, maybe thats why their live show is not really a must imoxpost
― Zeno, Monday, 13 October 2008 03:18 (fifteen years ago) link
you mean they play them with standard tunings? that's rather odd.
― Shushtari (res), Monday, 13 October 2008 03:26 (fifteen years ago) link
Anyone heard the new song? Album on the way shortishly ... I seem to be of a rare minority who thought Shapes was actually an amazing record, so, while keeping my expectations low, I am kinda hoping this new one kicks.

Friend emailed me, said it's up on Pitchfork. I presume it's a track reviewed or in the news section. I can't listen at work, so I haven't checked it out.

Different awesome, or just usual Polvo awesome. I am having trouble imagining what the new record is gonna sound like. Back to Polvo basics or more extensions of the sound, a la Shapes.
― grandavis, Thursday, 18 June 2009 20:05 (fourteen years ago) link
i mean it is unmistakably a polvo song but it is maybe less choppy and grooves harder than what you're used to. also seems to briefly give it up for some old school guitar heroics.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 June 2009 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link
the end is kind of polvo by way of mogwai which means it totally kicks ass. fuck, this is still my favorite type of music.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 June 2009 20:16 (fourteen years ago) link
Sounds like like parts of Shapes to me alright. A friend of mine was actually the Rock Director at a college radio station when Shapes came out and didn't add it, saying it was too "classic rock." Really, it was less choppy and grooved harder, to quote you. But yeah, can't wait to hear this (eventually). Thanks for the updates.
― grandavis, Thursday, 18 June 2009 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link
this is like shapes with a drummer who is about 100000X better
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 June 2009 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah, I think it's one of the dudes for The Cherry Valence, who were a pretty great live band (though they had two drummers, so not sure which one it is ...)
