What you want. What I want? Is it? Yes.
― Kaliova, Friday, 25 May 2007 10:08 (seventeen years ago) link
Alright, I'm gonna go with "When You Sleep"
― baaderonixx, Friday, 25 May 2007 10:11 (seventeen years ago) link
"loomer"!
― Mike McGooney-gal, Friday, 25 May 2007 13:01 (seventeen years ago) link
at last, someone agrees with me!
― Just got offed, Friday, 25 May 2007 13:03 (seventeen years ago) link
I think I'm gonna say "Blown A Wish." Maybe. Arrrrgh now I'm thinking "When You Sleep."
― Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 25 May 2007 19:51 (seventeen years ago) link
"Sometimes", and not least b/c of its astonishing role in Lost In Translation.
― Euler, Friday, 25 May 2007 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link
OK I ended up going for "What you Want" (just pipped "When you Sleep") because there's something about the way Kevin sings it that tugs my heartstrings and makes me feel really awesome.
― Trayce, Saturday, 26 May 2007 02:25 (seventeen years ago) link
no ned on this thread no credibility! it's almost spooky...
― scott seward, Saturday, 26 May 2007 02:54 (seventeen years ago) link
I wound up voting for "Blown A Wish." The "I'll turn it in with you" part wins me over.
― Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 26 May 2007 03:02 (seventeen years ago) link
While I love the way "Only Shallow" kicks off the album, and "Soon" closes it....I went with "I Only Said". It was hard to pick ("Loomer" was another contender), but I love that lilting guitar riff that floats through "I Only Said".
― eeyore19, Saturday, 26 May 2007 18:18 (seventeen years ago) link
To Here Knows When is one of my favourite things ever, and I'm not a massive MBV enthusiast either.
So, that.
― Mister Craig, Saturday, 26 May 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link
"to here knows when" is just a tiny bit more transcendent than the rest, so that
― sleep, Saturday, 26 May 2007 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link
What You Want was first impulse, and I went with it.
― marmotwolof, Saturday, 26 May 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link
I said Blown A Wish, but it could just as easily been I Only Said.
― I know, right?, Saturday, 26 May 2007 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link
It's interesting that this thread came up now, as I've just been talking a bunch about how I love shoegaze, but never really "got" Loveless. It seems like MBV are most people's shoegaze band. Well, Ride is mine. I don't know, maybe I need to give it yet another listen.
― roxymuzak, Saturday, 26 May 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago) link
Johnny OTM. "I Only Said" is the one.
― Mark C, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link
Ride is mine as well, but MBV are pretty good. In the great shoegaze debate, they're probably just behind Slowdive, and just ahead of Catherine Wheel in my estimation.

I've always said "Soon," but on certain days, "Sometimes" sounds like the most glorious song ever recorded. Today is one of those days.
― Tape Store, Sunday, 27 May 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link
"Soon" if only because I keep waiting for some hip-hop artist to sample it.
― 2for25, Sunday, 27 May 2007 17:08 (seventeen years ago) link
I feel like there's some riffs on loveless that are wrong.. like a little bit too high or too low pitched for what else is playing
Also some of the super obvious mixing board stuff on this album is really crap.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 27 May 2007 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link
it sounds pretty though
― Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 27 May 2007 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link
bump: results 'soon'

I like Sometimes a lot.

here 'tis, y'all.
― Eisbaer, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:36 (seventeen years ago) link
see, touched IS the worst song, disappointing result for loomer tho ;_;
― Just got offed, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:38 (seventeen years ago) link
Interesting.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:38 (seventeen years ago) link
I know you'd rate 'Soon' tops, Ned, but where would 'Loomer' be? And where would 'I Only Said' be?
― Just got offed, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:42 (seventeen years ago) link
(both are far too low here IMHO)
I know you'd rate 'Soon' tops, Ned
I didn't vote and I am not making a choice.

I'm glad "When You Sleep" came second :)

Why doesn't ned vote?
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 1 June 2007 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link
I'm not interested in poll structures as such -- the most I think about things like this and/or ranking in general is a year-end thing like Jackin' Pop, and even that's hard for me to draw up to my satisfaction. Discussion is something else.

woss rong wid Touched then?

The drummer wrote it.
― Scik Mouthy, Monday, 4 June 2007 08:27 (seventeen years ago) link
Surprised at the tie, btw.
"I've always thought "Come In Alone" was the worst track off Loveless - rocks most conventionally, almost sounds like a Hendrix parody."
wrong. great song.
― nostormo, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 23:24 (eleven years ago) link
I didn't know "Soon" came out a full 18 months before Loveless. Damn. Fans must've felt ripped off. They didn't even remix it or anything.
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 23:34 (eleven years ago) link
Its 4 seconds shorter
― kelpolaris, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 23:35 (eleven years ago) link
4 seconds away from perfection
think my ultimate sympathies may have drifted from 'loomer' to 'to here knows when', because the latter still sounds beamed in from beyond our reality and stands up as a genuinely astounding work of synaesthetic sound-art on an album full of brilliant art-pop songs (like loomer, which also hints beyond itself, but with more specificity and less mindbending divergence)
― imago, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 23:40 (eleven years ago) link
I don't even know the names of half of these songs. I like "To Here Knows When" the best, and then the 30-second one that sounds like a whale song, then "Soon," then the opener, then the one that goes "Mrrrmmmrrrr oooohhhhhhhhhhhh mmmmmrrrrrr oohhh ahhhhhhhhhhhh" with the crushing guitars in the background, then the one that goes "ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh, ah, ooooooooooooooooh, ah." The rest of the album I'm not too crazy about. I'd say the one that goes "And when I look at you" is my least favorite because it wakes you up from a dream from the previous song, and I like MBV the best as ambient noise.

Feel like "I Only Said" is the tune that actually gets underrated.
― Tim F, Friday, 8 February 2013 07:39 (eleven years ago) link
I Only Said sparked probably my first genuine, emotional reaction to music. I mean it's always been up-lifting, mellow-making, enthusiasm-pumping stuff but I've never gone so far as to experience an actual head rush. I Only Said, max volume, headphones, and right at about 1:45 made me lunge over in my desk chair, literally literally overwhelmed with blood and this sense of catharsis or release I didn't think a song would ever, ever procreate. I might as well have prefaced this whole comment with a "I'm 14 and" as it's very sentimental, YouTubey thing to say but I could never be swayed to think that is not one of the best songs in existence.
