This reminds me of industrial nu metal bands like Powerman 5000 or Rob Zombie but with a bridge in her style. I don’t know if I want the whole album to sound like this since I was never a fan of those genres and I suspect it wont but I’m on board.

That bridge though

Powerman 5000… now there's a name I didn't expect to ever see again. While we're at it, I'd add Orgy to the list.

pomenitul, Thursday, 29 November 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

I agree it should shave at least a minute off of it. It doesn’t have enough variation like say kill v maim to justify 6 minutes, the main hook probably repeats in like 70% of the song.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 29 November 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link

Yeah I was also thinking Rob Zombie, or perhaps Stabbing Westward.
But on the other hand, I've also heard some people mention Metric, and I can hear that as well.

MarkoP, Thursday, 29 November 2018 16:27 (five years ago) link

I haven't heard the song yet but this is a legit contender for creepiest ILM thread.

Agreed. It reads like a more sophisticated instantiation of 'why because she look interesting'.

That's all I've been trying to say. But I'm the weird one...

she does kinda look like britney's intersting sister when u think about it tho

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:08 (five years ago) link

It's good but (like others have said) brings back bad memories of post-NIN industrial radio rock (Gravity Kills, Filter, Stabbing Westward).

Yeah the bridge is the only part I like. The rest is just meh to me.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:25 (five years ago) link

Need to give it a few more listens. So far I like some of the parts but they feel kind of slapped together.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:31 (five years ago) link

i'm really digging the aesthetic here, but yeah too long and maybe a little plodding? feels like it's building to something that never comes. kept hoping/expecting it to explode but it just kinda repeats itself.

I have never understood the "lyrics don't matter" crowd until this moment, because this rules if I ignore every lyric

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

definitely in the metric/republica/stand alone complex ost space, so of course I was going to like it, except it has lyrics too

You don’t like the sci-fi/AI concept?

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:31 (five years ago) link

“You’re not even alive / if you’re not backed up on a drive” was, i think, great as an eerie parody of those eerie singularity advocates

my god if this was some goth metal band you all would be clowning the shit out of this

yeah i'd dig this if idk epica or nightwish or therion or within temptation came out with it. it wouldn't be anything like their other stuff tho imo.

Mordy, Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:47 (five years ago) link

don't worry ums, I realize this is a Grimes song through and through and I still want to clown the shit out of this

So does this count as Grimes's "getting back to our roots" record?

my first thought when i heard it was 'oh this is her doing a NIN song, cool i love NIN'

ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:09 (five years ago) link

listened to this whole busting unions last night, great soundtrack!

flopson, Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

This sounds like the kind of music I would rebel against in high school.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

a day later this still unfortunately rules, minus the lyrics, minus the tepid acoustic-radio-pop interludes ("Play Destroy" had this issue as well) plus the moment I started hearing "there's a place in France"

"Unfortunately, this rules" is my pop music sentiment

Still not used to the fact that when you look it up on YT, the subsequent result is fantano's 7 minute review, posted 19h ago.

I don't care who she's fucking and I don't trust anyone who does and this track rules.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 November 2018 15:12 (five years ago) link

to be fair I think it's less about "who she's fucking" and more about potential fascist over/undertones (although no more, really, than NIN)

Grimes: I have an idea for a song
Studio guy: go on

Studio guy: yea yea spit it out
Grimes: cyber eugenics would be cool?
Studio guy: ok i have Guitar_chug1.wav loaded in just punch in the vocals

There's space in this world for quality shade, especially when coming from someone else who makes Canadian industrial pop
