Matt B. (Matt B.), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

System of a Down's "Suite-Pee":

"I had an out-of-body experience the other day her name was Jesus,
and for her everyone cried, everyone cried, everyone cri-ee-ied..."

And this...

Pop songs should not use that word. Bad idea.

...I do and do not agree with. It's way too often improperly overused (ironically moreso by Xtian musos than secular ones), as a word that has a great deal of power and weight to it. When used creatively and with some sort of restraint (this means YOU Xtian "rock"!), it can be a very useful and heavy lyric.

And that Ribot song is fuckin' AWESOME.

Best song title that fits the request is 'Jesus just left Chicago' by ZZ Top.

Best song I've heard recently in this category is 'Jesus gave me water' by Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers.

I Wanna Know You by Philip Bailey

American Music Club, "Jesus' Hands"
Robyn Hitchcock, "Ye Sleeping Knights of Jesus"
Jim White, "A Perfect Day To Chase Tornados" "Sleepy Town" "Still Waters" "When Jesus Gets A Brand New Name" (all from the album "Wrong-Eyed Jesus!" natch)
point:
Knights of the New Crusade, "Secret Sign" (et al. no doubt: KotNC is a Christian garage rock band with the truly awesome slogan, "He is the rock. We will roll you.)
counterpoint:
Vital Remains, "Savior to None...Failure for All" (et al. no doubt: branding an inverted cross on one's forehead as Glenn Benton has done surely walks that thin line between love & hate)

I suppose someone already made a joke about hymns ... I just ask because I think the song I want to say is close to a hymn - Woody Guthrie, 'Jesus Christ'. I like this song the best because it's sad, it has a good tune, and it's quite communist (I often wonder whether there are any out and out socialist (presumably protestant) Christian denominations):

'This song was written in New York City,
Of rich man, preachers, and slaves;
Yes, if Jesus was to preach like He preached in Galillee [sic],
They would lay Jesus Christ in His grave.'
