I got in a fight once with a guy who insisted the song 'Summertime' from Porgy & Bess was a rip off of 'Doing Time.'

The singular sound of Sublime, alternately polished and rough and ready, finds stoner rock, rap, punk, and hip-hop funk blended with doses of ska, rock steady, dancehall, and every other pungent flavor of reggae. The result was a beautiful, warts-and-all brand of poetry - a powerful new blend of street sounds and party music. In Nowell, Sublime had an astounding singer and lyricist who created his own edgy but expressive underground vernacular. And in Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, Sublime was fortunate to have an agile, rock-solid rhythm section that could cover the entire musical waterfront. They were musical counterparts that created their own signature rhythmic foundation, creating the ultimate canvas for Nowell to embellish.[9]

I have a theory that after Nowell died, the rest of the band bumped into Colin Meloy and The Decemberists were born
― I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Monday, 30 April 2012 18:33 (fourteen years ago)
i do not possibly see where such a connection would come from, but ok. i mean, Meloy is the most horrible thing about The Decemberists, his backing band is p talented. much more so than the Sublime jokers.

i do not possibly see where such a connection would come from, but ok.
that connection came from reading this link posted by Alfred on Facebook:http://www.theawl.com/2011/03/somehow-theres-absolutely-no-raping-on-the-decemberists-new-album
... and then rereading the lyrics I posted 3 years ago to this thread

― Mordy, Monday, 30 April 2012 18:57 (fourteen years ago)
While we're making tenuous comparison points, I'm just going to bring up Arrested Development, who also briefly captured the culture's imagination with warm vibes, profundities about the beauty and brevity of life, and questionable if well-intentioned politics, now mostly inspiring "HA NINETIES WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT" reflection.
― da croupier, Monday, 30 April 2012 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

okay I know you're not trying to compare a song about a dude trying to process his emotions after he found out his girlfriend had an abortion and a song about being a big soppy afrocentric hippie to any of these Sublime songs because that would be really, really stupid
― I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Monday, 30 April 2012 19:06 (fourteen years ago)
sorry only you can make really tenuous comparisons between bands, djp

I am not hurt, and "quasi racist" was way too strong and I apologize for that. I still think calling out those two songs as suspect is incredibly strange, though.
― I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Monday, 30 April 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)
just to clarify, i was not trying to equivocate between the inane shit nowell says about dark subjects and the inane shit speech said about dark subjects, but note that both were '90s-identified post-hiphop hippie good time groups that said inane shit about dark subjects.
And I don't think it's incredibly strange to call out songs that incoherently race bait and have a guy telling a woman who just had an abortion "after I scold U, maybe I can mold u to share your truths with me. To tell U the truth, you made a mistake."
― da croupier, Monday, 30 April 2012 19:35 (fourteen years ago)
