I don't know, 'Beachfires' is pretty good as an ambient thing.
But yeah, otherwise, these are some of his least captivating things.

i think "beachfires" is really cool, it sounds vaguely like it's telling a story to me, there's just a little more going on in the structure.. but not in an over the top clichedwaaambient way

Yeah, I thought those two newest tracks were at least decent. A lot more "beaty" than everything else he's done in the past year.
He's been surprisingly prolific over the last twelve months. To recap, the past year we've heard:

"claustro" has to be his best track since rival dealer
― ufo, Thursday, 30 May 2019 13:30 (five years ago) link
so, if you take all of his tracks released under just burial post-rival dealer, you can make a pretty damn good full length. we're talking 2015-present basically.
chronologically, the songs are:
temple sleeperyoung deathnightmarketsubtemplebeach firespre dawnindoorsrodentclaustrostate forest
that he staggered the release of this material over the course of several years i think lessened its collective impact, unfortunately. but if you take this stuff in as the proper full length follow-up to untrue, it's a pretty bold step (forward?).
also totally with ufo on 'claustro' being an absolute jam and one of his best.

so the reason for this revive is because i've been listening to a playlist of just this tracklist and it's really pretty good. the sequence this way is pretty wild. hooks you up with a dope beat up front with 'temple sleeper' but then uses the hard transitions on 'young death' and 'nightmarket' to go way off into experimental (arguably non-musical) territory until 'predawn' gets back into beatier songs. the transition from 'indoors' into 'rodent' into 'claustro' is very epic and good. 'state forest' as the closer is so satisfying after what preceded it.
burial is good fall music, btw.

'Street Halo' through 'Rival Dealer' probably amounts to my favourite album-or-two worth of Burial--equivalent to a 3rd and 4th LP.
The work post'Rival' has felt a little wispy and indistinct--but I'll try queuing it up as a body.
― Soundslike, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 02:17 (four years ago) link
yeah the 2011-2013 releases from Street Halo to Rival Dealer are absolutely his best work (especially Rival Dealer which is absolutely transcendent) and have far surpassed Untrue for me. the Massive Attack remix EP from that period is unfairly overlooked too
his work since has been pretty hit and miss unfortunately. the ambient pieces have been pleasant enough but relatively underwhelming and while i love "claustro", the other more beat-driven tracks he's released over the past few years haven't done much for me.
― ufo, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 11:44 (four years ago) link
Genuinely love 'Subtemple' as an ambient piece but 'Young Death' is the best thing he's done in this timeframe imo. Not into his rave revival efforts, hope he branches out further.
― nashwan, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 12:26 (four years ago) link
Tried this playlist today, agreed that it works well as an album. Made me laugh when the banging beat started on pre-dawn after roughly half an hour of ambience. If this was an album, Rodent would be the hit single.
― I am using your worlds, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 14:35 (four years ago) link
so, i don't know why i never did this before, but if you take the songs from his 2011-2013 releases and put them in order to form an album, not only is it really long, it's actually a pretty great follow-up to untrue. kind of takes the super pretty aspects of 'ghost hardware' and 'shell of light' and builds on them and lets it simmer until it closes super appropriately with 'come down to us'; and it ends up as a burial "album" that is actually very pleasant and life-affirming. really am starting to think that i agree with ufo in saying that this is his most fertile period. the way i sequenced it is just the running order of the eps as they were chronologically released:
street halonycstolen dogkindredlonerashtray wasptruantrough sleeperrival dealerhiderscome down to us
it hangs together really tightly.
really hoping the 'claustro' / 'state forest' single is a precursor to something bigger and that that is forthcoming soon.

I think it’s really great that he’s just putting out singles now, his stuff works better for me in twenty - thirty minutes chunksreeeeellly dug “beachfires” from a few years ago

I agree that he’s only gotten better since Untrue
Burial has aged very poorly with me. It's like all the mystery has evaporated, once all the samples have been revealed.

His early work's the best for me, I like it when he keeps it simple. The first album is just about perfect.
― paolo, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 15:35 (four years ago) link
I think I prefer his early stuff because it fit in really nicely with the UK music scene at the time (garage, grime and dubstep) even though he was a bit separate.

lol for all the talk of compiling an album out of his 10s material he's just announced a compilation of it
Tunes 2011-2019:CD1:01 State Forest02 Beachfires03 Subtemple04 Young Death05 Nightmarket06 Hiders07 Come Down to Us08 Claustro09 Rival Dealer
CD2:01 Kindred02 Loner03 Ashtray Wasp04 Rough Sleeper05 Truant06 Street Halo07 Stolen Dog08 NYC
missing a few tracks though - "pre dawn", "indoors", "temple sleeper" and "rodent". i guess "pre dawn", "indoors" and "temple sleeper" were't on hyperdub so that's maybe part of it, but "rodent" was. not that i really miss them
― ufo, Friday, 25 October 2019 14:17 (four years ago) link
if u savages vote this into the 10s poll like rifts i will just skip its placement
the rival dealer ep on its own however, now that was always his best work imo and I'd fully support it

Enjoyed the Pitchfork review of Tunes 2011 to 2019. Usually this is the kind of critical hagiography that grates on me but it doesn't here, probably because I agree with all of it.
