Juggling the needs and schedules of three bands sounds daunting, but to hear Chris Carrabba tell it, it's a necessary part of his creativity, with each band benefiting the others. After reaching success with Dashboard Confessional in the early 2000s, he rejoined the reactivated band Further Seems Forever in 2010, and debuted the Americana and folk-influenced Twin Forks in 2013. All three bands have new albums in various stages of completion -- new Dashboard and Twin Forks albums are "pretty close to done," while a new Further Seems Forever EP is "in gestation" -- and Carrabba has been performing live with multiple bands, sometimes within days of each other.

Hey guys. I generally stay away in fear from ILM, but I was looking for some recommendations. Not much of a deep punk taste, liked it in the '90s, didn't branch out much from NOFX/Green Day/Operation Ivy/Bad Religion. 2000s pop-punk came and I was generally turned off by a lot of the bands coming out. Like some were OK, but.. in any case I'm a dilettante on this genre, mostly... bear in mind.
Was listening to an album in my iTunes library that still kills for me some reason. I haven't really heard much that hit me in just the right way called Fifth Hour Hero. (I also don't know how well known this band is, only that I discovered them right before they broke up. Some cartoonist recommended them, I think.) In particular their last EP (You Have Hurt My Business and My Reputation Too) and last album (Not Revenge... Just a Vicious Crush) are just fantastic. something about them reaches into my heart, like they jumped from a decade earlier sidestepping a lot of the style from the mid-'00s. Some shades of Japanese rock/pop from that era too, though I'm not gonna try to explain why I'm feeling it. The lead vocalist has a good style, and even the guy who sings the odd track here and there isn't bad. Crisp production, drums, angsty emotionally lyrics totally sold by by a great voice. Yet, admittedly, not super original? But there's something there, I don't know. Anyway, if anyone knows this band and/or could point me in the direction of music like it, I'd really appreciate it.
If you're curious, look up "Everything I Won't Miss" and "My Sympathies".
(I did a little research and found that they had some connection to Against Me!, appearing as background vocalists on one album and being on the same label at some point, but... that band didn't really do it for me at all, like most pop-punk bands to be honest.)

my favorite record so far is mostly emo adjacent, lovely little lonely by the maine. attn: spottie if you haven't heard it
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 May 2017 20:41 (seven years ago) link
I feel like I should mention that Disperse record again on this thread after trying to pimp it on the metal thread...it's really something and might appeal to emo fans since there's some serious sonic crossover with the 1975. I don't really know how to explain them to people. "emo-adjacent" is definitely stretching it though lol. admittedly I haven' heard much straight-up emo this year that I've been into.

New Rainer Maria single:

Not exactly what I expected, but for a comeback single it has a nice swagger and confidence. That can only bode well for the album.

yeah it kinda sounds like the wackiest possible kevin devine record. it rocks

Incidentally I saw KD live a few weeks ago - I thought it was going to be a full band show, instead it was solo. I was a bit disappointed at first but he was great. I teared up in public like a good emo kid.

lol i found that record extremely dull but chastity belt are not for me

I can definitely understand that, they're (purposely) not very dynamic, but they key into an emotional register that really works for me

list made me realize that even though i start this thread every year i don't like very many emo revival bands lol

mostly i think the best album on that list by a mile (hop along) is there under false pretenses
also that driver friendly's bury a dream is better than any album on there

btw the SN show was bonkers good
― Mordy, Thursday, 15 June 2017 03:05 (six years ago) link
Going through that list. Keep You is so much better than The Lack Long After, I have no idea why people prefer PBTT in screamo mode.
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 June 2017 14:21 (six years ago) link
and i def don't think the albatross is better than dealer, or whenever, if ever (ugh so dull) is better than harmlessness
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 June 2017 14:56 (six years ago) link
so it's so weird during the obsessives set they kept bringing these guys up to sing the songs but they couldn't really carry a tune and they didn't really know the songs (they kept looking at their phones to sing/read the lyrics). is this something they normally do or what
― Mordy, Thursday, 15 June 2017 15:02 (six years ago) link
I didn't hate that Spin list. Maybe 1 album per band would have helped a touch, especially when it's 30. Weird to exclude Waxahatchee but not Swearin.' Feel like that first Waxahatchee record is more suitably emo.

Is there a rolling punk thread this year?
I Hate Sex have some screamo qualities so I guess they're ok here.
