i haven't voted in an ilm non-year-end poll in a very long time (maybe ever?) but i am all in on this one

You could probably make a solid case for There's Nothing Wrong With Love as emo tbh
that's tricky, there's a buncha bands/records of that era that I'd prefer to classify as "rainy midwestern indie" (see also 764-HERO and early Modest Mouse)
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 12:48 (seven years ago) link
I think I do have to quibble with classifying something as emo that no one would have called emo at the time.

(if we're talking about something that actually was released in 1994)
I mean, that's also the Meadowlands issue.

a quick bit of searching reveals a "is the meadowlands emo" discussion here in 2004 & there seems to be the occasional discussion in reviews from that time

BTW, I love this idea for a poll.

Sorry, typo in that second Knapsack album. It should be:
Knapsack - This Conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now

Juno - This Is the Way It Goes and Goes and Goes

I like A Future Live in Past Tense just as much despite (because of?) being maybe the most overblown independent rock record of the 00s

I'm willing to stan for that one. Except for the spoken word track that's a wonderful album.

I will go on about them lots later, for now I'll just say they married post-rock and post-hardcore more seamlessly than anyone. and also, three geetars.

So for the poll itself, what criteria are we voting on? Say there's an album I absolutely love (Unwound, or Hoover) but in no way consider emo. Do I still vote for it? Are we voting for canonical emo albums, or just a sort of "these are my favorites of the bunch" thing?

Ozma - Rock and Roll Part Three
― ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 15:31 (seven years ago) link
Do what U feel Evan. I'm not voting for albums I love that I don't think fit the bill, personally. Other than that I'm just submitting what I like.
― Spottie, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 15:33 (seven years ago) link
As with the yearly metal poll I just let the poll runner decide what's eligible (some borderline/negligible things inevitably slip through) but ultimately I just vote for what I like on the list, personally.
― ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 15:33 (seven years ago) link
the unwound record is one of my absolute favorite records of all time and i will not be voting for it in this poll lol

sparta's porcelain is probably the earliest recorded instance of me being obsessed with an emo album even though it doesn't resemble any of the emo that was actually popular at the time
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 16:02 (seven years ago) link
vastly preferring Sparta to The Mars Volta was a major act of contrarianism at the time iirc
