same, mostly in anticipation of their tour with 3eb

lol yeah, between Brand New Eyes and Sainthood and Romance is Boring and this record, this was an era that catered to me to almost ridiculous extremes.
(I was also seeing 3EB live a ton around that time, too, mostly by coincidence)

they're playing the s/t all the way through, it's gonna rule, can't wait to graduate

Stephan Jenkins still rocks a hoodie very well. I interviewed him years ago and he described 3eb as "slammingly misunderstood," and that wording always stuck with me for some reason
― Evan R, Friday, 10 February 2017 20:47 (seven years ago) link
lmao

y'know even though the years have proven that Tim Kasher is basically Diet Greg Dulli I still have a huge soft spot for the run from Semantics of Song to The Ugly Organ (and the first three Good Life albums)

"helped" by the fact that Domestica accurately predicted the eventual vibe of my first live-in relationship

yeah that exactly the amount of cursive/good life i like. the few songs i've heard from his new solo record sounded pretty good in an early good life way

between Brand New Eyes and Sainthood and Romance is Boring
Taking this down as evidence for my RiB is emo stand.
also does anyone remember the Nintendo Fusion Tour?http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-08UCO2Zec8M/TuKaQd3SxKI/AAAAAAAAAPE/oc3E4BTMyR0/s1600/donkeykonga.jpg

Those Ugly Organ B-sides and those EPs they recorded while Greta was in the band are all essential, too. Every thing Kasher did got wildly uneven after that, but Mama, I'm Swollen is wayyyyy underrated. Some of his best songs are on that one.

Los Campesinos count as emo for sure (I have never liked 'em tho)
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:01 (seven years ago) link
first three lc records are v emo in their dna
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:02 (seven years ago) link
Very happy to be finding no resistance to this.
― devvvine, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:07 (seven years ago) link
Romance is Boring has some of my favorite lyrics of any record from that era. And yeah, super emo:
Please just let me be the one to keep trackOf the freckles and the moles on your back

for some reason that makes me wonder if Arab Strap should be eligible

well i'm gonna insist on johnny foreigner being eligible so it'd be weird for me to draw a line

let's not forget that Conor Oberst guested on Hug and Pint
I dunno they don't feel like a bridge too far to me (tho, like, B&S obviously are) but I'm not gonna die on that hill

with you there, all in for 'salt, peppa and spindarella'
― devvvine, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:16 (seven years ago) link
at the time of lifted i for sure thought of bright eyes as emo but in hindsight for some reason it feels more indie singer-songwriter'y? obv this has something to do w/ the trajectory his career took since then but lifted seems of a piece w/ the rest of his catalog - like maybe he was never emo it was like one of those things where something presents as X but it turns out it was coincidental and actually it turned out to be Y all along.
― Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:18 (seven years ago) link
yeah agree. interested to see how you end up framing this whole thing with which inclusions/exclusions. good luck
― Spottie, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:19 (seven years ago) link
I would say all Oberst things count as emo until you hit, say, Cassadaga.
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:22 (seven years ago) link
(both Desaparecidos records are damn near essential pop-punk, also)
imo bright eyes doesn't count, desaparecidos does (the first is as straight up of an emo record as you can get in its design), but i won't fight anyone over it

thermals have more in common with like the breeders than they do emo
is this just an emo/poppunk thing or is screamo / hardcore gonna be involved too?
― Spottie, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:30 (seven years ago) link
.... that's a tough call
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link
Fevers and Mirrors is maybe the most emo thing ever
I think Thermals almost count as pop-punk but I'm inclined to agree with brad
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:32 (seven years ago) link
imo it will be more fun if we include screamo
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:33 (seven years ago) link
screamo for sure going to be included
― Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:34 (seven years ago) link
in terms of the actual songwriting? eh

hell yeah, at least the bits I remember ("The Calendar Hung Itself" stands out for this), though I could use a relisten
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:38 (seven years ago) link
"calendar" is the closest it gets imo
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:41 (seven years ago) link
anyway iirc i said upthread i wouldn't fight anyone over this so i'm not sure why i'm doing it now lol
lol I don't know why I'm arguing about records I have 0% chance of voting for and haven't listened to in full in over a decade
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:42 (seven years ago) link
Haha. not really sure where else to post this but there's just enough pop-punk in here to warrant sharing. I spent like 2 hours messing w this last night:http://themagicipod.comnormally i scoff at stuff like that but i couldn't resist
